Okaloosa County Sheriff's deputies Joseph Trimboli and Eric Keyes in Florida earned "Medals of Merit" last week for a dramatic burning car rescue that was captured on one of their body cameras.

On Christmas Day of last year, the pair came upon a burning car wreck at around 3:00 a.m., and discovered the driver still trapped inside with the windows up and doors locked, according to an Okaloosa County Sheriff's press release (PDF.)

"Deputy Keyes had to hit and shatter the passenger side window to get the 45-year old driver from Brandon Florida out alive," the release stated. "The individual's clothes were already on fire."

It turns out the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash, and he later thanked the deputies for saving his life after suffering only minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The pair were rewarded for "putting their own personal safety aside to save the life of another individual."
