Diablo III coming May 15

(CBS News) Blizzard Entertainment announced the official release date of Diablo III Thursday.

After over a decade of waiting, Diablo fans will see the third iteration of the game on May 15.

"After many years of hard work by our development team and months of beta testing by hundreds of thousands of dedicated players around the world, we're now in the homestretch," Mike Morhaime, chief executive officer and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment said in a statement.

"We look forward to putting the final polish on Diablo III over the next two months and delivering the ultimate action-RPG experience to gamers worldwide."

The game's May 15 retail and online release will include these regions: the U.S., Canada, Europe, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Brazil will be able to purchase a digital copy of the game via Battle.net.

Diablo II Latin American countries and Russia will be able to purchase the game in stores and online on June 7.

Diablo III is an action role-playing game (RPG) that is the long-awaited third installment of the Diablo franchise. Players are immersed in a dark online fantasy world where they will embark on an epic quest. The game will have all of the elements of a typical RPG, such as picking up items and character classes. The last iteration of the game was released in June 2000.
