Man shot dead in SUV after dropping off son at Detroit school

DETROIT -- Police say a man was fatally shot after he dropped off his young son at a Detroit school.

The victim was killed Wednesday morning as he sat in his SUV outside Mark Twain School for Scholars, a public school which serves elementary and middle school students. Police Chief James Craig says the shooter, wearing an orange hoodie, entered the vehicle or might have been a passenger. The boy was in the school at the time.

Craig called the shooting “very disturbing.”

He told CBS Detroit the 28-year-old victim was slumped over in his SUV when officers arrived on the scene.

A witness, Shantae Roberts, told the station someone flagged her down to tell her another driver had just rear-ended her parked car. When she checked on the other driver, she saw the man dead.

“When I came outside I just kind of waved my hands to kind of get their attention, and because the windows are tinted I didn’t know if anybody was inside the car,” Shantae Roberts said. “So, I walked up to the car to peer in and the guy was, like, slumped over. So, I was like, ‘Call 911.’”

The suspect, a male, ran away from the scene. Police believe the victim and the suspect knew each other. So far, there have been no arrests, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Administrators say the school is not on lock-down, and no staff or students were involved in the incident. The school day will continue as scheduled.
