"Craigslist Killer" Philip Markoff's Brother on Facebook: "RIP Phil, I Will Always Love You"

NEW YORK (CBS) In the first public acknowledgment of "Craigslist Killer" Philip Markoff's suicide, Philip's older brother Jon has posted a message on Facebook, expressing his love for his dead brother, writing, "RIP Phil, I will always love you."

Jon Markoff posted the message on a Facebook page that was set up by a friend of Philip's from his hometown of Sherrill, N.Y. The page, created in the days immediately following Markoff's arrest, is titled "Philip Markoff is Innocent Until Proven Guilty."

On Monday, the day after Philip Markoff committed suicide in his jail cell at the Nashua Street Jail in Boston, Jon wrote: "He was a great guy, and a lot of people are really going to miss him. Thanks for everyone's support through this difficult time. RIP Phil I will always love you."

Jon Markoff's Facebook identification photo is a picture of Jon and Philip seen in happier times, smiling and wearing tuxedoes.

Last weekend - the same weekend in which he would have celebrated his one-year-wedding anniversary had his life played out differently - Philip Markoff punctured his carotid artery and other veins with a homemade scalpel and then put a plastic bag over his head. His final act before he laid down and pulled the blanket over his head was to write his ex-fiance's name - Megan - on his jail cell wall, apparently in his own blood. He also wrote the word "pocket" which, according to reports, is a pet name the two had for each other.

He was facing a first degree murder trial for the shooting of New Yorker Julissa Brisman in March, 2011. The case is now effectively closed.

The story of "Craigslist Killer" Philip Markoff will be featured on 48 Hours | Mystery, tonight at 8 p.m.
