Cops: Son of Phila. abortion doctor Gosnell shot in robbery

PHILADELPHIA - The 22-year-old son of Kermit Gosnell, a former doctor who performed illegal abortions, was shot after breaking into a home in West Philadelphia, police say, according to CBS Philadelphia.

Barron Alexander was reportedly shot around 7 a.m. Wednesday in the city's Mantua section, about four blocks from where the 22-year-old's father operated an abortion clinic where he performed the rogue abortions.

Gosnell, 72, is currently serving a life sentence for killing three babies born alive during illegal abortions. He was also convicted of illegally distributing painkillers, including many later sold on the street by addicts and drug dealers.

Alexander, who had reportedly changed his last name from Gosnell several months ago following his father's sentencing, allegedly broke into the rear of the home through a bathroom window.

One of the three men in the home woke up and became involved in a struggle with Alexander, according to the station.

"The resident screamed for help, a second male -- a second resident from that property -- came to assist him. He did have a firearm," Captain John Przepiorka said.

Przepiorka said the second male resident shot Alexander, who then fled the home but fell onto the ground outside, reports the station.

"I looked out my window and there was a guy on the ground, bleeding out," neighbor Amanda Nguyen said.

Alexander reportedly suffered two gunshot wounds and was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was listed in stable condition.

The residents were not injured during the incident.

It was not immediately known if Alexander was armed. He is facing several charges, reports the station.

Police sources tell the station that wallets, cash, an Xbox and a laptop were found outside the home.

The incident remains under investigation.
