Cops: Fugitive N.C. murder, rape suspect caught in NYC

NEW YORK -- Police say a Raleigh man wanted on charges of murder and rape has been arrested in New York City.

Police told local media that 21-year-old Kendrick Keyanti Gregory was arrested Tuesday, one day after a string of crimes in the Raleigh area.

Gregory is charged with murder, rape, two robberies and an assault with intent to kill.

Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said 64-year-old Thomas Melvin Durant was killed at his pawn shop around 7 p.m. Monday. Police think Gregory was involved in the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl shortly after Durant was killed.

Gregory is also charged with robbing Durant and another man who was robbed and shot earlier Monday.

Police say Gregory had two handguns when he was arrested. He also faces grand larceny and weapons charges in New York.
