Cops: Calif. dad attacks son's bully on school bus

RICHMOND, Calif. - A California father followed his 9-year-old autistic son onto the school bus Friday morning and attacked his son's bully, police say, according to CBS San Francisco.

Burnis Hurd, 44, is charged with child abuse and corporal injury to a child stemming from the incident. He was being held on $50,000 bond.

Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan said that after the father and son boarded the bus, the son pointed out an 11-year-old boy who had been bullying him.

"The father grabbed the 11-year old by the hair, pulled hard and raised the child out of his seat, then shoved him on the side of the bus where the window meets the wall," Gagan said, according to the station.

Gagan said Hurd threatened to kill the student and used threatening language to other students on the bus as well.

The 11-year old reportedly sustained a cut to his earlobe and another wound on his cheek.

According to the station, the bus driver did not intercede and did not immediately report the incident to district officials. Instead, the 11-year-old went to the school principal, who called police, district officials said.

Both the 11-year-old and the 9-year-old attend a special education program at Wilson Elementary School in Richmond.

In September 2010, a Florida father, James Willie Jones, was arrested after he stormed onto a school bus and threatened children because his 13-year-old disabled daughter had been bullied. The story drew national attention and sympathy from parents around the country who sent Jones notes of support and money to pay for his defense.
