LAS CRUCES, N.M. - A fired New Mexico sheriff's deputy who is accused of murdering a fellow cop has pleaded not guilty and made bail, according to CBS affiliate KRQE.

On Monday, a lawyer for former Santa Fe County sheriff's officer Tai Chan entered a "not guilty" plea hundreds of miles away in Las Cruces on a first degree murder charge in the killing of Jeremy Martin.

Chan and the 29-year-old Martin had stopped in Las Cruces for the night after transporting a prisoner to Arizona. Police say the two officers got into a fight after drinking at a bar, KRQE reported.

Back at the hotel, things escalated, and that's when police say Chan opened fire on Martin, killing him. Police say Chan admitted to the shooting.

No one has said what the argument was about.

According to KRQE, Chan is required to stay in Dona Ana County, where the shooting took place, but he's not required to wear a GPS device.

The judge Chan's bond at $600,000 cash or property, which he made.

Chan was fired shortly after the killing. No trial date has been set yet.
