Cameron Crowe, John Cusack disapprove of "Say Anything" TV series

A TV series based on the beloved teen romantic comedy "Say Anything" is in the works from NBC.

For some fans, the announcement about the 1989 film, starring a boombox-wielding John Cusack and his romantic interest Ione Syke, brought excitement. For Cusack and director Cameron Crowe, not so much.

Following the news from Deadline, Crowe, who directed the film, took to Twitter to disapprove:

"Say Anything" was Crowe's directorial debut. Cusack, who played Lloyd Dobler, agreed with Crowe's sentiment:

"Better Off Ted" writer Justin Adler hopes to take on the series, which would pick up 10 years later, per Entertainment Weekly.

"Lloyd Dobler has long since been dumped by Diane Court and life hasn't exactly turned out like he thought," the synopsis reads. "But when Diane surprisingly returns home, Lloyd is inspired to 'dare to be great' once again, get Diane back and reboot his life."

While NBC can legally move forward with the project, not getting the blessing from the original creator is frowned upon. Deadline speculates that the project may never see the light of day.

Here's the trailer from the original film:
