Calif. father finds bag of meth in daughter's Halloween candy

HERCULES, Calif. - A parent in northern California made a shocking discovery Monday when he found a bag of meth in his daughter's Halloween candy, reports CBS San Francisco.

While going through the candy his 8-year-old daughter collected Halloween night, the father found the drugs and reported it to the police, law enforcement officials say. The father had reportedly gone trick-or-treating with his daughter in a community near San Pablo Bay.

The father then handed over the plastic baggie to the police. The bag was filled with a white powdery substance and later tested positive for meth, weighing about 0.1 grams without packaging, according to the police.

Police knew they were certain what the substance was - even without testing.

"Pretty instantly, I mean it's something we see a lot, methamphetamine," Sergeant Ezra Tafesse told the station.

Still, there is no suspect in mind. Tafesse also told the Contra Costa Times that police were uncertain if this was intentional or accidental -- but he admits that it does happen from time to time, especially with marijuana.

The local police were encouraging parents to check their children's bags of Halloween candy for any illegal substances. If drugs are suspected, parents should call the Hercules police at (510) 799-8260 or Pinole-Hercules police dispatch at (510) 724-1111.
