Former Senator Bob Dole of Kansas, the 1996 Republican presidential nominee, is recovering after being hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, according to a statement he gave to Politico.

The 86-year-old former senate majority leader has reportedly been battling pneumonia and had surgery on his knee.

"Thanks to the great doctors and nurses at Walter Reed, I am making great strides, working between sessions and hope to be fully recovered and back at the office in a few weeks," he said in his statement.

A source told Politico that Dole is working from the hospital in connection with his position at Alston & Bird, a law firm.
