Big bear beats the heat in California swimming pool

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. -- Apparently humans aren't the only creatures who like to use swimming pools to beat the heat.

A bear in California was recently spotted taking a dip in a woman's swimming pool in California, reports CBS Los Angeles.

Ginny Pitchford-Joyner captured photos of the bear she says swam in her pool in the city of La Cañada Flintridge for a few minutes before walking off.

Pitchford-Joyner told CBS Los Angeles she was first alerted to the bear after she heard helicopters circling above her home.

"I heard helicopters above the house circling for quite a while and I kept coming outside to see, to try and figure out what it was," she explained to CBS Los Angeles. "I went back inside the house and I was trying to search online to see what was happening and I heard a loudspeaker announcement about staying in your homes."

Pitchford-Joyner says she watched as the bear walked past her window and then got into her pool.

"It was pretty awesome," she said. "I've never seen such a big animal that close to me, you know?"

Pitchford-Joyner said she would love to know what happened to the bear after it walked away.

"Did it make its way back in the forest? Did someone catch it?" she said. "'Cause I want to feel safe when I come out here."
