"Barefoot Bandit" items raise $1,725 for animal shelter

RAYMOND, Wash. - A $100 donation to a Pacific County animal shelter by the "Barefoot Bandit", plus other items linked to his criminal escapades, have combined to generate about $1,725 in contributions to the shelter in an eBay auction, reports NBC affiliate KING.

Colton Harris-Moore, one of Washington state's most notorious fugitives, left the $100 and an accompanying note at the Vetter Animal's Shelter in Raymond, Wash. in May 2010, while on the run from the law, according to KING. He was arrested in the Bahamas a few months later in July 2010 and sentenced to 6-and-a-half years in prison in January 2012.

"Drove by, had some extra cash. Please use this money for the care of animals," read the note, signed by Harris-Moore, who also added, "AKA Barefoot Bandit, Camano Island, Washington."

The 22-year-old, then 19, was wanted for a string of break-ins and car, boat and airplane thefts, the station reports.

Dr. Gina Lewis, the veterinarian at the shelter, received the cash and copies of police reports linked to Harris-Moore earlier this year, according to KING. She framed both and put the items for sale on eBay to raise money for the Harbor Association of Volunteers for Animals (HAVA), Raymond's animal shelter.

"We've had a lot of feral cat projects that get very expensive," Lewis told KING. She also said that she was undeterred by complaints from critics saying she should not help a criminal get his wish.

"Just because he has a tender heart for animals does not mean other people shouldn't support that.... We're just going to feed animals. Get them healthy and find them new homes."
