Baby boy dies after being left in hot car at school

DELTONA, Fla. -- Investigators in central Florida say a baby boy died after being inadvertently left in a vehicle at a middle school by a teacher who was supposed to be caring for the child.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office detectives say the 6-month-old boy died Friday after being left in the backseat of the SUV parked at Deltona Middle School for most of the day.

The sheriff's office has opened an investigation, but no charges were immediately filed.

CBS affiliate WKMG reports that according to deputies the teacher arrived at the school around 7 a.m. Friday, and the baby boy was found just after 4 p.m. at the front parking lot of the school.

Temperatures hovered in the mid-80s on Friday.

"I can tell you we have employees that are very shaken over this incident right now," said Sheriff Ben Johnson. "This is one of those days that you don't like being the sheriff."

A school deputy rushed to the vehicle a short time later, but it was too late.

WKMG reports that Volusia County Schools released a statement about the incident.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and the Deltona Middle School community. This tragedy has broken the hearts of all of us in the school district," the statement read. "We will stand by the family with love and compassion."
