Joshua Matthew Palmer, 33, was arrested Friday, two days after 21-year-old Shauna Haynes, of San Diego, was found behind the Chadwick hotel. Palmer will be arraigned Tuesday.

A man found the suitcase near a row of trash cans at the rear of the three-story building at about 11 a.m. on April 6. Noticing what appeared to be hair protruding from a zipper on the case, the man called police.

Austin Palser, a childhood friend of Haynes, said the victim and Palmer had a tumultuous relationship.

"He seemed like he was abusive or some kind of controlling manner relationship. Whenever I would ask about him, she would not really talk about him. I don't know if she was protecting him from me because I was like her big brother," Palser said.
