Angry crowd gathers after cop shoots, kills man near Ferguson

BERKELEY, Mo. --- St. Louis County police say a man who pulled a gun and pointed it at an officer has been killed the St. Louis suburb of Berkeley, Missouri.

Berkeley is about two miles from Ferguson, where a police officer fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown in August.

Sgt. Brian Schellman says a police officer with the city of Berkeley was conducting a routine business check at a gas station around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday when he observed two male subjects and approached them.

Schellman says one of the men pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officer as he approached. The officer then fired several shots, striking and fatally wounding the suspect. Schellman says the second suspect fled.

He tells CBS News the suspect's gun was recovered at the scene.

The Reuters news agency reports the dead man was black.

Dozens of people gathered there. Many were clearly angry.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports they included ministers and some people who've been involved in protests over the fatal shooting in August of Brown by white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. A grand jury failed to indict him. He's since quit the Ferguson force.

The newspaper says at least three people have been arrested. It adds that, "Explosive flashes were set off. It was unclear by whom. A Berkeley police car was towed from the gas station."

According to CBS St. Louis affiliate KMOV-TV, officers from Florissant, Overland, Berkeley, and St. Louis County were at the scene, equipped with riot gear. The stations says they deployed flash bangs.

The St. Louis region saw unrest after Brown's killing, and protests were renewed last month when a grand jury chose not to indict Wilson.
