Americus, Georgia cop shooting suspect believed barricaded in home, officials say
AMERICUS, Ga. -- The suspect in a Georgia shooting that critically wounded one officer and killed another is believed to be barricaded in an Americus home, officials tell CBS News.
Police have been searching for the suspect, 32-year-old Minquell Kennedy Lembrick, since the Wednesday shooting, which happened after the officers responded to a domestic disturbance call in the same southern Georgia town. They have said Lembrick is considered armed and dangerous.
Residents were being moved out of the area Thursday morning and a SWAT team has been called in, officials say. More information on the developing situation wasn’t immediately available.
Authorities say Americus police Officer Nicholas Smarr died Wednesday and Georgia Southwestern State University Officer Jodi Smith was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. Both had been officers since 2012. The officers were reportedly best friends and had graduated from an area high school together in 2009.
