(CBS/AP) SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Joseph Patterson, a 27-year-old Sioux Falls, S.D. man, has been indicted on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the death of the 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

Lincoln County state's attorney Tom Wollman said Monday that Patterson will be scheduled for an arraignment this week. Wollman says Patterson was indicted on Friday by a Lincoln County grand jury.

Patterson is charged with assaulting Tyrese Ruffin in a Sioux Falls apartment. The boy died after being hospitalized with severe head injuries. Patterson is the boyfriend of Tyrese's mother.

Peterson had just recently found out that Tyrese was his son. The NFL star had been planning to meet the boy and rushed to Sioux Falls when he heard Tyrese was hospitalized.

CBS affiliate KELO reports the second degree murder charges against Patterson carry a mandatory life sentence.

According to the station, Patterson has been in trouble with the law before. Last year, he pleaded guilty to domestic assault and violating a no-contact order. In that protection order, his ex-girlfriend, who is not Tyrese's mother, wrote that Patterson had threatened to kill her multiple times and had spanked her three-year-old son so hard that it caused welts.
