$70K reward in string of high-end Fla. burglaries

Bay Harbor Islands, Fla. -- Two suburban Miami couples are offering rewards of $70,000 after they say thieves stole nearly $1 million worth of jewelry and other valuables from their condominiums, reports CBS Miami.

Bay Harbor Islands Police believe the thefts are part of a pattern of crime. They believe six criminals have struck at least nine times in mostly high-end communities in three Florida counties between December and mid-March, reports the station.

They're hoping surveillance video of the thieves will help identify them. Some of the thieves were captured on video during a Feb, 17th incident in Fort Lauderdale and on March 14th incident in Hillsboro Beach.

One Bay Harbor Islands couple is offering a $50,000 reward after $500,000 worth of jewelry and $15,000 in cash was stolen from their home Dec. 1. Another couple, also of Bay Harbor Islands, is offering a $20,000 reward after they said $450,000 in jewelry and gold coins were stolen on March 15th.

The couples would not give their names, reports the station.

"These rewards are unusual," Bay Harbor Islands Police Chief Sean Hemingway told CBS Miami."But this is about helping two families get their lives back."

Anyone with information is asked to call Bay Harbor Islands Police at (305) 866-6242, Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-tips(8477), or Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS (8477).
