How an office view became a 60 Minutes story

For the last few years, the employees of 60 Minutes have watched from their office windows as a futuristic building slowly rose across the street. No one has had a more direct view than legendary correspondent Morley Safer.

As construction neared completion this year, Safer decided to do a 60 Minutes story about the strange structure outside his window -- and the Danish "starchitect" behind it, Bjarke Ingels.

For this week's broadcast, Safer interviewed Ingels about the project on a boat ride along the Hudson River. At first glance, Safer says the skyscraper looks like a pyramid or an enormous sail. Ingels calls it by its geometric term -- a "hyperbolic paraboloid."

"I see it out of my window in my office on 57th Street, but it changes," Safer says in the video player above. "Every view of it is different."

The building is named "VIA 57 West," and it's an ultra-modern apartment complex with a lush courtyard facing the river.

"It is the unlikely child of a New York skyscraper, and if you like, a Copenhagen courtyard building," Ingels says.

The complex will also have amenities such as a golf simulator, a movie screening room, and a pool. It's all part of Ingels' plan to make Manhattan more livable. Hear Ingels discuss his philosophy with Safer in the video below.

Ingels also revealed the model of the stadium where the Washington Redskins football team will be playing soon -- complete with a moat for tailgating kayakers.

"The stadium is designed as much for the tailgating, like the pre-game, as for the game itself," Ingels tells 60 Minutes. "Tailgating literally becomes a picnic in a park. It can actually make the stadium a more lively destination throughout the year without ruining the turf for the football game."
