(CBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - A 5-month-old boy died after being left in an SUV parked outside his family's Southern California home, and authorities say the boy's father might have forgotten about him.

According CBS Los Angeles, the father of the child, 50-year-old Michael Clayton, called police after he realized the child was left in the car.

Deputies rushed to the family home at around 2 p.m. Monday and tried to save the infant, but it was too late.

The child was reportedly found wrapped up in a blanket and strapped to the car seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Clayton told investigators he had taken his six children to a daycare at around 8 a.m., he returned home, switched cars, and then went to work, according to the station.

Coroner's officials identified the baby as Seth Clayton.

CBS Los Angeles reports temperatures in Carson on Monday reached a high of 77 degrees, and the temperature inside the car was higher.
