2 park rangers stabbed on Boston Common

BOSTON -- A homeless man is under arrest after allegedly stabbing two park rangers on Boston Common, CBS Boston reports.

One of the rangers, a 46-year-old, is listed in critical condition at Mass. General Hospital. He has been a ranger for 20 years. The other, a 23-year-old who is new to the service, is being treated at Tufts Medical Center with less severe wounds.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans says the suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Bodio Hutchison, a homeless man with violent criminal record. Evans says Hutchison lunged at the rangers without provocation.

The attack happened in the middle of the Common around 4:30 in the afternoon. A witness told CBS Boston that the rangers suffered significant wounds and people who happened to be in the area took their shirts off to try and stop the bleeding.

Commissioner Evans credited the public for following the suspect after the stabbing and leading officers to his location. Evans says the knife used in the attack was thrown into Frog Pond and recovered by police.

Evans said Hutchison faces attempted murder charges.

Boston Common is one of the oldest parks in the country in the heart of the city's historic district.
