Delta flight heading to Australia returns to LAX after smoke detected onboard
A Delta Airlines flight heading to Australia abruptly turned back to Los Angeles International Airport less than an hour after taking off on Saturday after smoke was detected onboard the plane.
The flight, DL43, was en route to Sydney and took off a little after 9 p.m., according to FlightAware. It landed back at LAX about 30 minutes later.
Airline officials say that smoke was detected in the galley area of the plane, which serves as the kitchen for flight staff.
Though no smoke was found when the plane landed, medical teams were dispatched to the area for any passengers that may have required assistance.
Eventually the flight was canceled and all 162 passengers were rebooked for a different flight.
