After Censure, Graham Defends Work With Democrats

(CBS)
Republican South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham, who was formally censured by members of his own party earlier this week for playing nice with Democrats on climate change and other legislation, has spoken out in his own defense, according to Capitol Hill's newspaper Roll Call.

The Charleston, South Carolina Post and Courier reported that the Charleston County Republican Party voted on Monday to censure Graham for not upholding the Republican platform. The group cited his cooperation with Democratic senator John Kerry on the proposed cap-and-trade bill and his support for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, Obama's $700 billion bailout plan.

"U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham -- in the name of bipartisanship -- continues to weaken the Republican brand and tarnish the ideals of freedom, rule of law, and fiscal conservatism," the resolution reportedly reads.

"There have been a lot of things over the years that people have been dissatisfied with the senator for doing but I think the cap-and-trade issue is the straw that broke the camel's back," Lin Bennett, the county GOP chairwoman, said according to the South Carolina State. "We have a state platform that if you want to run as a Republican in our state part of that platform includes ideals and goals we would like to see and one of them is smaller, and less government intrusion into people's lives."

Graham's office has now responded to the rebuke, Roll Call reports. Kevin Bishop, a spokesperson for the senator, highlighted the importance of bipartisan legislation and pointed out Graham's consistently conservative voting record.

"Senator Graham has a lifetime conservative voting record of 90 percent and last year was rated the 15th most conservative Senator by National Journal," Bishop said. "Like former President Reagan, he strongly believes elected officials need to find common ground and work together to solve difficult problems like making our nation energy independent and protecting our environment. Working to solve problems and being conservative are not mutually exclusive… Senator Graham will continue to pursue the same common-sense conservative agenda in his second term in the U.S. Senate as he did in his first."

Katon Dawson, former South Carolina GOP chair and Republican National Committee chairman candidate, has also spoken out in the Huffington Post defending Graham.

"What has the base so upset was that any time you partner up with a Hillary Clinton and John Kerry or, God bless him, Ted Kennedy, you have a problem on your hands," Dawson said. "But I know Lindsey. He is cagey and crafty. People forget that he grew up in the back of a pool hall and that his daddy sold liquor."

Dawson went on to point out that Graham had managed to win some legislative victories for his party.

"At the end of the day what we are looking for is offshore drilling for natural gas," Dawson said. "And Lindsey got that in the bill."

The Republican platform of late is apparently not to cooperate with Dems on accomplishing anything. Then hoot that Obama hasn't done much.

I don't like to think that working to solve problems and being conservative IS mutually exclusive, but SC Republicans are trying their best to show that.

Really, following the republican platform if you carry the banner is pretty basic; that's why he can be censured!

Please cite the constitutional provision that allows the Feds to mandate the cost, style, quality of healthcare or the forced purchase of anything? I am not talking abut any anecdotal examples of bad legislation that happened to pass that was unconstitutional. Go to the document and see where it is. Apparently every one of the supports of this healthcare bill has the same trouble finding such a provision.

Velma179 you are sooo funny. I love it. You have no ideas and no defense for the policies and spending and taxing of this Congress and Administration . YOu approve of the daily loss of freedom and private property. Though you meant it as an attack, I wear the badge of Conservatism "ultra-conservatism" proudly. I suppose you are a "progressive" since being a liberal is embarrassing is it not? I know you think that anyone who disagrees must be ignorant and common and completely incapable of understanding the issues. I don't mind letting you believe in your basic superiority but it is really funny. Is anyone that disagrees with you considered to be radical? I am laughing all the way to 2010.

chittown639 Where did you get the idea that a senator's job was to get along and get things done. The founders set up the system thinking that it would require quite an effort to pass anything. That may have been a mistake. They should probably have made it a requirement for a 2/3 margin in order to pass anything in the House. We would have been much better off today. One of a senators most important jobs is to prevent bad legislation and to keep the government from taking away our freedoms. The only oath that they take is to uphold the Constitution and that includes the words contained withing the enumerated powers clause. The government has imposed it way into areas of our lives that they have no authority to act and Graham has been on that horse for a long time. He is about to get bucked off I believe.

Personally, I consider both these pieces of legislation huge mistakes...but he "cooperates" with the Dems on them, and what's his reward? To be censured!

Hey, GOP! That's the point of government...for these representatives to work together to get things done! Which, just goes to show you exactly what the true policy of the GOP is: total non-cooperation!

With THIS as their core party policy...WHY should anyone want to waste their time voting for them? They are totally un-American!

All through the Bush years, he was 'out in front' doing the wrong thing...leading the charge into Iraq or backing him when he shouldn't have!

As a result of that, many...if not a majority...of people in his home state probably want him 'OUT'!

But, this censure, may actually help him...because it suggests that he's working with the Democrats and 'doing his job'! It's the political 'Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval' for him!

While he didn't work with the Dems for years or help his country for years...NOW, he can PRETEND he did...and hopefully get reelected next time! He's got to start now...because he has a pretty long, negative history!

Says you; some of us believe differently, thank goodness. It appears that Gallup poll as well as others show republicans ahead in generic polls with 58% of voters expecting the next prez to be a republican. Face it "progressive" communists, Americans are more moderate to conservative than leftist/liberal. Shown in every stste to be so!

The senators job is to work with other senators to make laws for the good of the people, not obstruct the operation of our government for political ideology. The Republican Party is making a big mistake blasting congressional members for doing their job.

Don't you just love the revisionist way the Republicans now say that the TARP is now all OBAMA's idea? According to the site of the Federal Reserve, this program STARTED on October 14, 2008.... before President Obama was even ELECTED!!!!

You beat me to the punch gramto8...

These ultra conservative people don't seem to be very strong on facts or truth telling... but they sure do like finger pointing, all the while knocking those they judge over the head with their Bibles and crosses.

Sheesh...

Exactly! Bush & GOP got this mess 'off and running', but try to blame the Dems for it! Typical!
