Alan Grayson Apologizes to the Dead, not Republicans

Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson generated conservative anger with a speech last night in which he said, in regard to the GOP health care plan, "Republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick." (Watch it at left.)

The comment prompted calls for Grayson to apologize from Republicans and the threat of the introduction of a resolution of disapproval on the House floor similar to the resolution censuring Republican Rep. Joe Wilson for his "you lie!" outburst at President Obama.

Now Grayson has apologized – though it's probably not going to placate his critics. On the House floor this afternoon, the confrontational Florida representative said he wanted to apologize because according to a Harvard study, more than 44,000 Americans die every year because they lack health insurance.

"That is ten times more than the number of Americans who have died in Iraq and who died in 9/11," he continued. "But that was just once. This is every single year. That's right. Every single year."

"I call upon the Democratic members of the House, I call upon the Republican members of the House, I call upon all of us to do our jobs for the sake of America, for the sake of those dying people and their families," he went on to say. "I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven't voted sooner to end this holocaust in America."

OUTSTANDING. Finally a Democrat who doesn't fold in the face of Republican hypocrisy. What's his address -- I'd like to send him a campaign contribution.

With Democrats, it boils down to 'moral duty' and the implementation of 'regulated capitalism'.

You mean the same democrats screaming for the release of the rapist Polanski?

Every Democrat that I have discussed Polanski believes as I do...that he should be extradited to serve his sentence.

To carry on a rational discussion 'moral duty' versus 'money' pertaining to Health Care Reform you will have to stay within the same context.

Holocaust in America? This guy should apologize to his parents for being such an embarrassment
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
YOU should apologize to yourself. You embarass yourself with every post you write. Tell us again how you're not a Republican.

So I am a repub because I appose stupidity? Interesting.

In order for you not appear 'stupid' you will need to learn the correct spelling or meaning of the words you use.

What you basically said was "...So I am a repub because I appose (meaning juxtapose) stupidity"

Just by coincidence I happen to be in Florida on business this week and the people calling the radio stations here about this seem to think this guy is, and always has been a joke. Not sure how he got elected.

It's about time someone gave the republicans a taste of their own medicine. I hope they do submit their resolution. And watch it get voted out of existence. I'm getting sick and tired of these loudmouth do nothings.

Their only mission in life is to stop the administration from moving the country forward and the only GOOD thing about their tea parties, their racist misspelled signs, and their facebook polls is that their behavior will make absolutely certain that the republicans will lose whatever power they still have.

As long as they continue to behave this way, the whole country knows who the idiots are.

So keep right on making noise, all you right wing nuts, you're doing the whole country a favor by telling us who you are.

I always thought Mr. Grayson was always thoughtful of others and the last time I checked the Republicans are the 'other' party. I wish he had not stated that because he lives in a state that has an abundance of Republicans. I am just thankful I am an independent, once removed from the Republican party. Have a good evening guys.

NEVER WAS THE TRUTH MORE TOLD.

If you don't believe me check out some old videos of town hall meetings. I clearly remember RNC Committee Chariman Michale Steele's callous treatment of a Howard student whose mother died because she could not obtain cancer insurance. I also remember an infamous put down by a Republican Congresswoman of a constiutent who could not get health insurance or health care.

According to a report by Urban Institute, 22,000 people die each year because of inadequate health insurance and medical care. Our for profit system of health care murders about 7 times more people than Al Qaeda did in 9/11, but I have yet to hear the GOP mention this. They are too busy collecting campaign contributions from health insurance companies and big Pharma.

According to the 2009 CIA Factbook, our infant mortality rate is twice as high as the infant mortality rate of Sweden or France. Washington DC has the highest infant mortality rate in the country, and over three times higher than Sweden or France. (Source Statesmaster.com.) Just a few blocks away from K Street and its lobbyists babies are dying, yet I have yet to hear one Republican experess even the slightest concern. Nor do Republicans seem to care that Republican strongholds like Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisiana all have infant mortality rates that are as bad as DC. Again, but Republicans would rather watch babies die than to institute "socialized medicine." - even though every single Republican Congressman and woman gets health care courtesy of the US government.

I might also add that according to USW, about 6,000 Americans a year die in work related accidents. Yet the GOP guts worker safety regulations, has stymied the National Labor Relations Board, and refuses to pass the Employee Free Choice Act.

The evidence is overwhelming. Republicans don't give a rat about human life. The GOP can go ahead and have a hizzy fit and temper tantrum if they wish - but the truth is the truth.

A couple points here:

First, there's times to be rude and there are times not to be rude. During a live, televised presidential speech---THAT'S NOT THE TIME!

Second, Congressmen criticizing the hypocrisy of each others' actions is NO BIG DEAL! They should! Congressional debate is NOT A TEA PARTY!

Third, Congress has a long HISTORY of rigorous debate, there's no reason
to change that now!

Fourth, sometimes REALITY is HARSH! And men/women from either party shouldn't be afraid to call a snake 'a snake'! They should just be sure it IS a snake!

Finally, the GOP does nothing BUT COMPLAIN about everything these days, they remind me of some snotty-nosed four year old whining to his mom, like you see in the grocery stores! They need to STOP IT! Grow up and start acting like men!

Not to mentions that:

1) Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.) said Dem plans would tell seniors to "drop dead."

2) Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) said Democratic plans for a public option would "kill people."

3) Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) said Dems' proposals might "put seniors in a position of being put to death by their govt." and,

4) the list goes on.............

I think the Republicans should be the ones apologizing to the 44,000 dead, and to their families, and to all of America for siding with the immoral insurance and hospital predators that prey upon the suffering of the sick and needy in this country.

I agree too and I find it amazing that when Joe Wilson did his boorish deed, the republicans said he was right.

Now today on the news they are likening Grayson's remarks to those of Joe Wilson. I thought the republicans all said Joe Wilson was right??

So does that mean that they are acknowledging Joe Wilson was wrong now? Or are they acknowledging that Joe Wilson AND Grayson are right?

Man it's fun but hard to keep up with republican extremist hypocrisy.

Joe Wilson interrupted a national speech. Grayson had the floor - this was his time to talk. The hypocrisy is worse than you thought.

Oh but it is'nt. I know full well the hypocrisy of the republican extremists!
by bajajohn1 September 30, 2009 7:13 PM EDT
Grayson was 100% correct. Republicans want healty insurance companies, not healthy Americans. They like crisp green money from that industry and will lie, scheme and demogogue the health reform issue at the expense of all American citizens. What a bunch of jerks the Republican Party membership continues to represent.

With Republicans, it boils down to 'money' and the continuance of 'unregulated capitalism'.

With Democrats, it boils down to 'moral duty' and the implementation of 'regulated capitalism'.

I say you Go Grayson it is about time some one on the other side called these blowhard republicans bluff. If you were in my state I would campaign and vote for you.
by spirithealth September 30, 2009 5:29 PM EDT
I completely agree with Grayson original comment. Yes it is a strong words, but republicans seem to block any kind of reform what so ever. Insurance companies can't be trusted to look past their greed and provide quality health insurance. It's not any different than the issues with Wall street and the mess our financial system is in. Greed must be held in check. Just a few years ago I considered voting republican, but not any more.

The lobbyists are controlling our law makers. The average American voices are not being heard. The end result is I am being taxed, but not represented by my representatives. That's taxation with representation, wasn't that why we had a revolution from Britain some 200 + years ago?

Way to go Rep Greyson. Your comments are in no way inappropriate, in the manner and forum you have said them in, given similar statements on the floor by 3 Republicans lately (Not including Wilson's clear breach of Decorum).

We need to push the public option all the way to a Senate Floor vote or filibuster.

Let the Republicans 'kill this bill with a filibuster' in the Senate if they can to set the stage for the upcoming 2010 elections.

The voters will then make it plainly clear what they think of the insurance companies and that they want the public option.

And, we will not have to worry about their charades anymore.

All aboard the train to filibuster!
by starleo146 September 30, 2009 8:11 PM EDT
ACCORDING TO CNN today the Insurance lobby is spending 1.4million dollars a day to defeat the public Option and guess who got over 10 million dollars of that money, right republicans, they are being paid well to defeat the public option and the democrats that voted against public option got a good chunk of the insurance lobby monies as well. So as we sit and watch and HOPE they will do the right thing for the people they represent is a complete false hood, MONEY is what these Legislatures want MONEY.They forgot what it is to legislate for the people. What the H@ell are people voting them back in for are they buying there votes as well. America THE BEAUTIFUL yea just look at our legislatures. What is SEN. Conrad sitting in the republican corner for how much did he get from the Insurance Lobby sick of them, sick of waiting for them to do the right thing.

Intellectually, politically, and most of all spiritually "dead".

That's them.

While the dead can accomplish nothing concerning legislation,
the GOP can see that anything good for America is defeated,
so who does more HARM? And, who is therefore more valuable?

Wow, a great Democrat steps to the front and calls a Republican a spade.
