Sen. Byrd: Health Bill Should be Named for Kennedy

(AP)
Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.V.), one of the few to have served in the Senate longer than the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, said in a statement today that health care legislation should be named in his honor.

Kennedy famously called health care reform "the cause of my life." He set the tone for the current health care debate in Congress and worked to pass a number of monumental health care-related bills while in the Senate.

"In his honor and as a tribute to his commitment to his ideals, let us stop the shouting and name calling and have a civilized debate on health care reform which I hope, when legislation has been signed into law, will bear his name for his commitment to insuring the health of every American," Byrd said in his statement.

CBSNews.com Special Report: Ted Kennedy

Byrd, along with many others in Congress, shared his grief publicly last year upon learning the news that Kennedy was suffering from terminal brain cancer.

Below is Byrd's full statement today:
"I had hoped and prayed that this day would never come. My heart and soul weeps at the lost of my best friend in the Senate, my beloved friend, Ted Kennedy.

Senator Kennedy and I both witnessed too many wars in our lives, and believed too strongly in the Constitution of the United States to allow us to go blindly into war. That is why we stood side by side in the Senate against the war in Iraq.

Neither years of age nor years of political combat, nor his illness, diminished the idealism and energy of this talented, imaginative, and intelligent man. And that is the kind of Senator Ted Kennedy was. Throughout his career, Senator Kennedy believed in a simple premise: that our society's greatness lies in its ability and willingness to provide for its less fortunate members. Whether striving to increase the minimum wage, ensuring that all children have medical insurance, or securing better access to higher education, Senator Kennedy always showed that he cares deeply for those whose needs exceed their political clout. Unbowed by personal setbacks or by the terrible sorrows that have fallen upon his family, his spirit continued to soar, and he continued to work as hard as ever to make his dreams a reality.

In his honor and as a tribute to his commitment to his ideals, let us stop the shouting and name calling and have a civilized debate on health care reform which I hope, when legislation has been signed into law, will bear his name for his commitment to insuring the health of every American.
God bless his wife Vicki, his family, and the institution that he served so ably, which will never be the same without his voice of eloquence and reason. And God bless you Ted. I love you and will miss you terribly.

In my autobiography I wrote that during a visit to West Virginia in 1968 to help dedicate the 'Robert F. Kennedy Youth Center' in Morgantown, Senator Kennedy's voice quivered with emotion as he talked of his late brothers and their love for West Virginia. 'These hills, these people, and this state have had a very special meaning for my family. Our lives have been tightly intertwined with yours.'

I am sure the people of the great state of West Virginia join me in expressing our heartfelt condolences to the Kennedy family at this moment of deep sorrow."

I can think of no more appropriate action than to name this bill after Ted Kennedy. The bill is a loud of crap and so was Ted!

Putting Kennedy's name on HR3200 would be like putting lipstick on a pig.

His forte was compromise. The Senate is working on something-if it is acceptable to both sides and similar language receives a bipartisan vote in the House, yes, it should be named after him.

Additional: please note, I did NOT bring him up (the_majesty)---YOU DID!

And, you did because you knew my comments applied to him! And you knew WHY, too! So, you can drop your childish 'innocent little us' routine, it isn't going to impress anyone, anyway!

But, go back through the postings in this article and several others on the occasion of this man's death, and then come back here, and tell me AGAIN that there aren't ANY negative comments by right wing Conservative
Republicans!

That way we can see what a liar you are, too! And further more, I'm tired of reading the endless, factless lies and rants of the mindless right wing trolls that infest this site like lice! And, I'm tired of seeing intelligent posters attacked, besmirched, and having their posts removed because some right-winger couldn't handle 'the truth'!

No sir, you and 'your kind' mistake meaningful dialogue as rants and consider your own worthless diatribe as meaningful; until you are intelligent enough to know the difference, I recommend you refrain or carefully reply to my comments, because I WILL CORRECT YOU! Good day.

"make that "if we can't have the same insurance program as our legislators", then I would agree with you."
______________
Well said gboy41, but I would also add "our legislators and, at the very least, postal workers".

To speakinup23:

The poster known as the_majesty is the most ABUSIVE commenter on this site,
if CBS stuck to it's own rules he or she would have banned that person for
sixty (60) days for their continual abusive personal attacks!

Therefore, I did NOT consider their comment authentic, original, or anything more than a 'kiss up' attempt to appear normal and excluded it as "non-representative" of that posters true feelings in the matter!

After he/she yells 'fire' all day---day after day---why would we accept
what he/she says when he/she says, 'it's all clear'!? We'd be stupid to!

If you are so easily bamboozled by the_majesty, speakinup23---then you BELIEVE whatever he has to say, if you like---but, the vast majority of the rest of us will pay this liar and propagandist no mind whatsoever!

IF anyone has reason to apologize, it's the_majesty for his abusive personal attacks and waste of posting space on this site, AND YOU for defending this clown and presuming to raise this 'non-issue' as an issue!

The both of you need to grow up and get a life!

People if we cant have the same insurance program that our government employees have then we should reject it rather than accept that we are second class to those who we pay.

The article is about naming any health care bill enacted by Congress after Ted Kennedy, and what do we see?! Nothing but derogatory, name-calling from right-wing Conservative Republicans!

What about? About something Kennedy was involved in over 40 YEARS AGO!
And subsequently, cleared over!

But, it demonstrates how members of the party of HATE, cling onto this one event---hurling it like mud at all Democrats while trying to claim that ALL Democrat leaders are as crooked, corrupt, demented, perverted,
immoral, unethical, and lawless as your typical Republican leader today!

If only that was true! But, the sheer numbers of crooked politicians caught OR exposed show us that they are Republicans!

So, members of the party of Hate, American Taliban terrorists, continue
your name-calling if it makes you feel good---but, the rest of America knows WHO and WHAT you really ARE!

Personally, I don't think they should name any health bill after anyone!
Many people have worked for it's passage.

But, first they need to get one that is really a health care bill for the public, and NOT one that protects the AMA, pharmaceutical, and insurance industries, which would be WORSE than NO bill at all!

Certain Democrat members need to stop taking money from the insurance and pharmaceutical industries and pass a real bill for the public!

Otherwise, we might as well vote against Democrats in 2010!

As a Republican I will say again, I fully respect Ted Kennedy's
dedication and service the people of this great nation.
I also respect the wishes of the people. The people do not want
health care to be taken over and run by the government.

There is nothing derogatory about, nor is there any name calling in either of the_majasty's post which appeared an hour before your rant.

"I have much respect for Ted Kennedy's dedication.

What health care bill ???
The American people made it very clear at the
town hall meeting, they are against ObamaCare.

Ease up dude. And, BTW, most people would feel an apology is in order. But you just do as you will, ok.

Silly boy/girl, how about keeping your Pittsburgh street humor to yourself? And start thinking about what healthcare can do for you...or do you work for a private healthcare insurer and are pleased to bring up trash from the past to muddy the waters?

Rowdy's clones are out in force today confirming the passage of health care reform with the venom in their insults, innuendo and fabrications.
by gboyd41 August 27, 2009 1:29 AM EDT
I agree that with his passing this country has lost a very dedicated, and perhaps, even great, Senator. I admire him for his endless efforts for what he believes is right- even though I disagreed with him 90% of the time. I do not believe, however, that we should rush ito a "Lion of the Senate Health Care Bill.
by User_00000000002945496845 August 27, 2009 4:39 AM EDT
All concerned should come together to pass comprehensive healthcare reform in honor of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, as a memorial to what a great American and honored statesman he was.
