Girl with Two Heads Born in Philippines

Updated 1:30 a.m. EDT, Friday.

A baby girl with two heads was born at Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital (FMH), a government hospital in Manila, the Philippines on Tuesday night.

"Baby Girl Arciaga," now under observation at the Philippine Heart Center, was born with two hearts contained in one sac. The heads have separate brains and spines, but share most other vital organs, including lungs and kidneys.

"This is a very rare case. It's new even to us," Dr. Ruben Flores, FMH's director, said in a television interview.

The condition is called dicephaly monozygotic conjoined birth, and it occurs in only one out of 80,000 live births.

Doctors at the Philippine Heart Center said oxygen and medication has been keeping the girl – technically a pair of conjoined twins – in stable condition, but an underdeveloped heart threatens their life.

Their complexion turns dark whenever they cry because of a hole in one of the hearts.

"Eventually if one heart fails, the other one will be affected," said Dr. Flores.

Speaking to CBS News Friday, Dr. Ludgerio Torres, director of the Philippine Heart Center, completely ruled out any operation to separate the conjoined twins, but said doctors were optimistic that the girls could survive.

A scan confirmed that the baby on the left has a normal healthy heart.

The hole in the other baby's heart is believed to be correctable, but doctors are not in a hurry to operate as antibiotics and oxygen are helping keep the twins in a stable condition. More importantly, said Torres, "together, they help one another," with the healthy heart bolstering the other.

Torres said the babies were being fed intravenously, but they've also started bottle feeding. So far, their "sucking reflex has been wonderful," added the doctor.

For the Arciaga family, it would not have been a complete surprise to have twins. Both sides of the family have twin members.

But ultrasound images before the birth showed only one baby, so the couple did not expect twins, much less conjoined twins.

Salvador Arciaga, the father, earns a meager income as a cycle-taxi driver. He appealed to the public for financial assistance.

"Please help our baby. Please support us and help us extend their lives," he said.

The Arciagas could only hope that their twins end up like Abigail and Brittany Hensel of Minnesota, who for 19 years have been living with one body. They can walk, run, ride a bicycle, and even drive.

The Aguirre twins from the Philippines, who were joined at the head, underwent a series of surgeries at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City in 2004, and are now living normal, healthy, and physically separate lives.

But these are rare cases. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the overall survival rate of conjoined twins is somewhere between 5 and 25 percent.

Salvador and his wife remain hopeful that their daughters will survive.

"I hope she lives. Because if she does, we will do everything that we can to raise her well," said Salvador.

There have been other cases like this one where the twins have been able to live healthy, happy, full lives, so there is hope for these infants. The Hensel twins, for instance, share the same body, like these infants. They are 19 years old now, athletic, healthy... and normal teens in every other way. They even have driver licenses (yes, plural). Here's the wiki article on them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abigail_and_Brittany_Hensel

And a documentary on them when they turned 16. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=7D8C62223520E07D&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL

"This occurs in 1 out of every 80,000 live births".
Are you kidding me?
The person who said that is either mistaken or a total idiot.

one in 80,000 ? Seems way too high.

The only solution is to remove one head.

They are newborns. Nenborns are sinless. They can't sin. They are truly helpless. It looks like they can't move their heads as they look to be joined as well going by the photo. They can't wear a necklace.

The article states the condition is called dicephaly monozygotic conjoined birth, and it occurs in about one out of 80,000 live births. I do not envision any way in which this is condition is anything but tragic.

But, it is endlessly amusing to observe how we use such events to either prove or disprove a deity. Or, to display our infinite wit or wisdom.

One wonders if this condition is avoidable ------- not the anomalous birth, mind you ------ but, rather, our seemingly endless need to explain, quantify or ridicule such events.

They should grow up & become competitive eaters. Talk about an advantage! I heard that Kobayashi guy makes bank at Nathans & other contests.

Yeah, but the cost of buying necklaces is doubled, so it cancels out the savings.

The real problem comes when one wants to marry. How will that work? The mind boggles.

Nature will run its course, regardless of any initial medical intervention. If they're meant to survive this rate condition, then they'll survive. It also becomes a question of quality of life, morality, religion, etc.

This is so horrible, even if it gets to the point to where one head could be removed, how in the world could anyone make that decision of which one? I know I couldn't. I am praying for the family.

As the saying goes, two heads are better than one. Now that idea can truly be put to the test.

The Hensel girls should be brought down to give the parents hope. What beautiful girls, the newborns and the Hensels. Bless you.

I don't understand why they're calling this "A child".
There are two brains, two children here. As far as we can tell from this article, there are two mentally functioning children now-or-soon capable of separate thoughts, feelings, talents, decisions.

I see all of you saying "God Bless", and I wish them divine intervention, for sure, but I look at these twins and see proof there is no kind God involved in our lives. It would be unjust of any participating god to do this to innocent children.
Every 80,000 children.
If "God" were a corporation causing births like this, one every 80,000 children, the governments would be putting him out of business.
For a planet of 6 Billion, that's 75,000 conjoined twins every year.
WHERE is God?

It is sin that has this world as it is and not God. He made this world perfect and we chose to sin and mess up all the perfection he gave us. Read your Bible sometime it might help you to understand. I hope that when things go right in the world you attribute that to God as you are doing all the bad stuff.

I can't speak to the bit about God, but as an aside, your math is way off. World population is currently growing at about 1%. Your number implies that it's growing at about 200%, and that one in 80,000 births are a set of relatively healthy conjoined twins. In a year, less than 250 conjoined twins are likely to be healthfully born.
by erlindab July 31, 2009 10:28 PM EDT
Maybe God gives gifts like these children so that the rest of us have an opportunity to exercise love and compassion, and to help us recognize the presence of God in ourselves - and others less "perfect."

Why do we as a species insist on perpetuating the notion that there is someone or something in control of the universe? random events happen all the time and people say it's God's fault or the fault of some other agency. It's not God, it's not the devil, it's not sin, it's not piety. It's chance.

When we know more about the universe, we can even explain why it happens. We already know how. The point is, the way things are is because of us, and the way things will be depends on us. But random events will always happen and until we become more knowledgeable in the ways of the universe, we will have no way to predict them.

Leave Gods and Devils out of this. Its on Nature and whatever explainable but random factors that occur to make such things happen.

Leave it to these crazed atheists fanatics who worship Richard Dawkins' *** to exploit a situation like this for their own religious agenda against the "evils" of religion.
by felmersham August 4, 2009 2:37 PM EDT
God doesn't play cosmic chess with people's lives. People like you confuse God with Santa Claus, God doesn't wrap us up in bubble wrap and protect us from the world. We wouldn't be free if he did. We make our own choices and sometimes nature throws up a genetic oddity like this.
