A "Perry Mason" Moment in the Confirmation Hearings

The Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor are expected to wrap up Thursday with a full vote early next month. There was a "Perry Mason" moment at the hearings today.

"I was a big fan of 'Perry Mason,'" said Al Franken, the junior senator from Minnesota who took office only last week.

Apparently neither one of them would do very well on a "Perry Mason" trivia quiz.

"What was the one case in 'Perry Mason' that [Hamilton] Burger [the district attorney] won?" Franken asked.

"I wish I remembered the name of the episode, but I don't," Sotomayor said. "I just was always struck that there was only one case where his client was actually guilty."

"And you don't remember that case?" Franken asked.

"I know that I should remember the name of it, but I haven't looked at the episode," Sotomayor said.

"Didn't the White House prepare you for that?" Franken asked laughing.

Senator Franken didn't know either – but CBS News looked it up – it was the "Case of the Deadly Verdict."

I'm waiting to see if the Senate Republicans will adorn puffy sleeve outfits and dance the conga line (singing ba-ba-loo) in today's hearing meeting.

Actually, he worked at Comedy Central with Ben Stein (a former speech writer for Nixon). That would make a better joke.

You asked for it, so here is a real clown:

Minnesota and California have state governments like 3rd world countries, which is a reflection of the voters who live there.

You can always spot a yellow dog from a mile away. When you hear someone giving their best heartfelt effort to give dignity to what the new Senator from Minnesota said today when he asked the honorable judge about an episode of Perry Mason, you know somebody is in hook, line and sinker. WHAT?????? I can only imagine what we'd be hearing right now if that kind of question had been asked by somebody from the other side of the aisle. But then again, I would hope that we'd never have anybody on our side who would presume to display such moronism at such a time. If I were from Minnesota and had cast my vote for this guy, I honestly would not want that getting out.

If you missed it, don't worry. I'm sure there'll be more opportunity to witness the utter depth and understanding of the Honorable Senator from Minnesota.

Al took advantage of the moment to shed a little light on the fact that this hearing is simply a formality. She WILL BE a Supreme Court Justice in spite of all the crying, whining and stomping of feet by republicans.

Are you having fun yet Al? Or should I ask you again in six months to get a truthful answer. Enjoy yourself.
