Gonzales Dodges Question On Cheney and CIA

Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales deflected questions Tuesday regarding whether he knew anything about former Vice President Dick Cheney's alleged orders to the CIA to keep its counterterrorism program secret from Congress.

"It's very difficult to talk about classified activities in an unclassified setting," Gonzales told CBS' "The Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith.

"We tried to work as hard as we could with Congress in making sure they understood what was going on," in the executive branch Gonzales said.

On Monday, some members of Congress called for an investigation into the mysterious program, which government officials told AP allegedly sought to kill or capture suspected al Qaeda militants at close range, as opposed to using airstrikes.

Last Month, CIA Director Leon Panetta ended the program upon learning of its existence and its lack of results, and the fact that Congress had been unaware of it since its inception soon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, according to one official with direct knowledge of the plan told AP.

Gonzales' hesitancy to talk may stem from a 2008 Justice Department report that charged he mishandled highly classified and sensitive documents relating to the Bush administration's counterterrorism plans.

He resigned amid controversy in 2007 after holding the attorney general post for more than two years. Prior to being attorney general, Gonzales served as President Bush's White House Counsel.

Questions about the CIA program followed a discussion about Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation hearings on "The Early Show."

Gonzales, himself a former Texas State Supreme Court judge, said a good justice is "sensitive" to his or her biases.

"That should be the reality in every case, not an aspiration," Gonzales said.

Alberto Gonzales has the skunky stench of greed and corruption all over him. This guy was a disgrace to the country and the Hispanic community. If he manages to stay out of jail, I hope he never seeks public office again in any way, shape or form.

Dick Cheney - A true American Hero ...

The person above must be a paid poster, or an uneducated hick to utter such nonsense. Try paying attention for more than 10 seconds.

A MILLION humans are dead because of this bloodthirsty con artist.

Darth the Cheney, God of Invented War (wmd) and God of Torture (its only a little water fer crying out loud) should be behind bars.

If any of us regular people committed 1% of the crimes this murderer has committed we'd be put away for life in a heartbeat.

There will be no justice, no truth, and no trust in our government until the entire Bush/Cheney crime syndicate is behind bars where sociopathic genocidal maniacs belong.

If they don't do something about Cheney and his crimes, then what kind of law and order system do we have in this country? I guess laws are pretty much words on a piece of paper. To obey the law is the responsibility of all citizens, not just us poor, non-connected working stiffs.

Dont be fooled again....The former administration was simply a crime syndicate run with fascists representing huge corporations.
They didn't care about the people or congress.
Big Al Gonzoles couldn't remember a thing when questioned by his superiors in congress, but now claims he tried to work "very hard" with congress...somehow I think he still has memory lapses so I wouldn't trust his word on anything.....

"Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales deflected questions Tuesday..."

Well, duh. Bush, Cheney, & PNAC, LLP didn't hire the guy because they wanted somebody who would abide by the Constitution and tell the American People the truth.

They're Republicans, for God's sake.

Gonzalez provided a correct answering style for the type of questions he recieved. When a US Senate or US House Subcommittee subpoenas Gonzalez to answer questions under oath, he can provide answers - but the public won't know most of them. If he is either charged or testifies against those who are, then the public will know considerable more.

The war crimes of the 2,000 Taliban POW's recently found in a mass grave will be the downfall if found to be tied to either Bush or Cheney. The matter is currently under investigation.

Gonzalez' job as AG was to enforce our laws-not conspire to break them. The fool is an utter failure.

He disgusts me as a Hispanic, and American-Mexican -- he's a liar. He covered for Boosh and Cheneyigans! Cheney needs to be brought before Congress and start singing like a bird!

Gonzalez is a digrace to America and he makes it worse for American-Mexicans to get one step higher due to his lieing.

The mass grave situation will probably be blamed on subcontractors.Cheney has an amazing ability to throw his subordinates, cronies and "pals" under the bus when the crap hits the fan.

Gonzales will forever be known as a lackey and a yes man. He shamed the Office of Attorney General, but no less than other Republican stooges like John Mitchell and the guy during the Iran-Contra scandal, which comes close to this drama that is playing out. Check out the Iran-Conra tapes on u-tube.

Good Morning!

I am Alberto "The Great Gonzo" Gonzales, former Attorney General and blindly-loyal "YES" man to the former Great Emperor George W. Bush and former VP Darth Vader Cheney.

My favorite TV show was "Hogans Heroes" and my favorite charachter was Sergent Shultz! He knew everything, but when anyone asked him anything his answer was "I KNOW NOTHING, I SEE NOTHING, I HEAR NOTHING!"!!!

So, if you ever catch reruns of "Hogans Heroes" and see Seargent Shultz, just think of me and wonder, "Is he REALLY THAT STUPID, OR REALLY THAT SMART?"!!!!

HAIL OBAMA??????

My issue isn't with the secret program or the assasination of islamic thugs. They deserve it and more power to the CIA. My issue is with how useless this Gonzales guy was in his position. He really was a puppet.

Just more proof that Cheney was indeed the man who pulled the strings and made everyone dance to his tune. Bush never had a chance against Tricky-Dicky.
Cheney should have just faded into the sunset and enjoyed retirement. By stirring things up, he's bringing to light some of the shenanigans he pulled.

You're right. It'll end up as war crimes trials for Bush and Cheney, as has been predicted for quite some time now.

Do you mean there was actually a secret counterterrorism plan in the works for the CIA to kill or capture Al-Qaeda in a time of war? What a novel idea! I understand that it was so secret that not even the New York Times knew about it. This is absolutely shocking that the CIA would devise a diabolical scheme to keep our country safe from terrorists. Thanks to Leon Panetta, Osama bin Laden will be able to finally leave his cave and Ayman al-Zawahiri can stop looking over his shoulder. Attention all terrorists: the bad CIA will not harm you. You can finally stop hiding and go about your business of terrorizing our country.

Do you really want to know what this is all about? Leon Panetta told the committees there was no indication of anything illegal or inappropriate about the effort itself. Remember, The CIA did not put this plan in operation and it was later dropped. But after Panetta told congressional lawmakers that he canceled the program, House Democrats also called on the CIA director to retract his statement that the CIA does not mislead Congress. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday signaled that she would give the House Intelligence Committee a green light to investigate incidents in which the CIA misled or lied to Congress, including times when Cheney was supposedly involved.

You don?t need to be a rocket scientist to figure where this is going.

Well like I said the other day. I hate Cheney but wish him no ill will really. I think at that particular time America should be grateful that we had Dick Cheney. His efforts to protect America cannot be denied.

However. If what seems to be the case is in fact true. Than Cheney, in perhaps all the noble reasons one can drum up, never-the-less over-stepped his bounds considerably.

If America tolerates a public official - a VP especially - who willfully and with malice decieves, lies to, mis-leads or otherwise mis-informs Congress on the nature of covert ops, than he has violated a serious law.

The toleration of such behavior would weaken our domestic defense and set this country up with a very bad precedent that would give free license to any official to ignore the law of this land. It would set the stage for corrupt officials to put in place secret plots to overthrow this very country. Can anyone imagine that? I can.

For as much respect as I have for Cheney - I do not think he is an evil man. Just a misguided man - even so this is a serious breach of checks and balances of this country the likes of have never been seen before.

If a government cannot face accountability to its people, than its people will not face its government.

He forgot his favorite phrase "I cannot recall". I think after he no longer has any koolaid in his system, he might wake up and start telling the truth. He is no longer Bush's "abogado."

Good morning
I trust Harry Smith and his interpretation and delivery of the news has made him a contender for the "Cronkite" award. However why in the world would you trot out that confirmrd criminal, career criminal to discuss Justice select Sotomayor. He left in total disgrace and his willingness to offer an opinion is pathetic. Again you can find others who have a considered and respected opinions.Mr. Smith again does a great job but he should have more of a voice when the news leaders trot out these people who have done nothing in their carreers but feed on the helpless, and cripple the handicapped.
Thank you
