CBS' Chip Reid, Gibbs Spar Over "Town Hall"

CBS News White House Correspondent Chip Reid – along with columnist Helen Thomas – got into a contentious back-and-forth with White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs at Gibbs' daily briefing yesterday.

The topic? The questions being asked at yesterday's health care "online town hall," which were submitted by the public but selected by the White House. Reid also brought up the fact that the audience was selected by the White House and the college where the event was held.

"It just feels very tightly controlled," Reid said. "It feels -- I mean, the concept of a town hall I think is to have a open public forum, and this sounds like a very tightly controlled audience and a list of questions. Why do it that way? Why not open it up to the public?"

"How about we do this -- how about you can ask me that question tomorrow based on what questions were asked rather than preselecting your question based on something that may or may not come through," Gibbs replied.

"This is a town hall," Reid said later. "This is an open forum for the public to ask questions, but it's not really open."

Responded Gibbs: "Based on what?"

"Based on the information that your staff gave us on how the audience and the questions are being selected," Reid responded.

"The questions are being selected by people that e-mail on Facebook and Twitter," Gibbs said.

Replied Reid: "Well, they're not deciding what questions actually get in."

Watch the entire exchange, which includes Thomas' complaint that "I'm amazed at you people who call for openness and transparency," above.

Hi Chip,

Thank you for waking up the white house press meeting with your boldness and you pro public concern in regard to set up town hall meetings. You have a perfect "partner in crime" sitting next to you, KUDOS to you & Helen Thomas.
I was equally impressed with your defending VP Cheney level of non-respect by the White House.
I may even start watching CBS again, let me stipulate, only when you are on.
Thank you again,
ps

I am so pleased to see actual reporters at work - not just cheerleaders for a particular party. Perhaps CBS can report new again.

During this exchange Gibbs said to Reid ?I promise we will interrupt the AP's tradition of asking the first question. I will let you ask me a question tomorrow as to whether you thought the questions at the town hall meeting that the President conducted at Annandale?.

I watched the press briefing today and didn?t even hear a question from Chip Reid let alone the first question. I wonder if that's Gibbs? way of admitting the obvious; that all the people and questions at the town hall were pre-selected.

Chip - Thank you for asking the kinds of questions those of us who are NOT enamored of PrezBo would like to ask. Keep up the good work and thanks again!

Go Chip and Helen! As a former journalist, I'm appalled at the pre-produced type of press conferences and open forums this administration is advocating. What's with all the requirements? Screening for obvious appropriateness and safety issue is understandable; this is more like producing a play with actors and scripts. I'm surprised Gibbs has made it this long, but that's another story at www.EveryDayPR.net.

Great job! This type of "retro", neutral, unbiased, journalistic question is a breath of freash air. Keep up these types of questions and not only will viewership increase but so will your creditability. Terrific!

Reporters demonstrate confrontational chutzpah? Didn't do this kind of thing during Bush. They knew that regime would clean their clocks. The white house press corps has no credibility.

Kudos to Chip and Helen! I'm so glad someone finally stood up to Gibbs about these fake townhalls. Obama's manipulation of the media is outrageous and unacceptable. If Obama cannot be challenged by questions from the general public in forums such as a townhall, doesn't have the knowledge or experience to answer the questions himself, without the TOTUS (and his prewritten answers) bailing him out everytime, then he is seriously in over his head and should not be POTUS.

Kudo's to Chip and Helen. What took so long? Administration needs to realize they are no longer on the campaign trail. Every town hall meeting becomes a "theatrical production" carefully orchestrated, every possible detail rehearsed over and over, to assure that Obama continues with his unprecedented popularity. He is tremendously gifted; unfortunately, he is using his "gift" to solidify his personal agenda and not the agenda of the American people who elected him. He has back-peddled on every promise. His inexperience is finally showing through loud and clear and Chip and Helen are to be applauded for speaking up. Let's hope the rest of the media speaks up to this.

Congratulations - you have just figured out that you have been duped. Now that you know you have been manipulated will you stand for it? Will you agree to the questions the night before and then ask real questions the next day? Will you ask hard hitting questions? Will you speak up when the answers make no sense? If I had to guess - none of the main stream reporters have enough fortitude to ask hard hitting questions and expect real answers. I wonder if Helen Thomas still thinks that George W. was the worst president?

Great job Chip! Keep it up! Makes me hopeful for CBS and the mainstream media. Hopefully, this will not be a one time event and you guys will become consistently more "confrontational".

Many THANKS To Chip Reid and Helen Thomas!

Is the press finally beginning to awaken from their Obama campaign stupor? A biased press is a problem - a silenced press is alarming. Where is the transparency we were promised? The control the White House has been exercising is beginning to make McCarthyism look like child's play.

Amazing job Chip & Helen...all administrations try thier best to control the media, Obama is just better than most.

Start to realize that Dem's and Repub's are just part of the same game. Neither cares about you, just your vote and your control.

Slaves gave 100% to thier masters, and they knew they were slaves. We give 50% (from one form of taxation or another) to the masters and we think that we are fre. The slaves that think they are free are easier to keep in line.

What the clip didn't show, and can be seen in its entirety on utube, is where Chip asks Gibbs if Obama is going to back out of a campaign pledge and okay a middle class tax increase. In the whole clip, Gibbs smugly reply's to Chip by telling him to email Obama.
