Schumer: Borders Are Now Safe Enough For Immigration Reform

(AP/Matt York)

During the debate over immigration reform in Congress over the past few years, certain parties have consistently pointed to border security as a top priority, as the Associated Press points out. The continuing debate over what constituted adequate border security was a major reason why the immigration bill failed three times.

But according to Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the borders are now safe enough to take a step forward. "We can pass strong, fair, practical and effective immigration reform this year," he said following a hearing on border security Wednesday.

Customs and Border Protection said that the number of people arrested while illegally crossing the Mexican border dropped 27 percent from the same period since last year. Along the Canadian border, the number of arrests was down 13 percent.

The shrinking labor market in the U.S. plus tougher border enforcement caused the number of undocumented immigrants to fall, said Schumer.

Under Bush Administration policies, more undocumented immigrants are getting deported than ever before, according to the Washington Post.

The Post reports that President Obama's immigration policies do not depart too far from those of his predecessor. The major difference is the Obama administration's plan to limit Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids at workplaces.

Mr. Obama supports a "virtual fence" of sensor towers along the Mexican border and the "zero tolerance" jailing and deportation of apprehended undocumented immigrants.

The president has invited members of Congress to the White House on June 8 for a meeting about immigration reform.

Our Texas-Mexico Border is not safe from tunnels or foot traffic.
Drug cartels have more fire power than our own patrolmen.
Nevertheless, what should NOT happen is silent amnesty for the millions of illegals in our Country now on Welfare, Medicare, and all other American Entitlements! 40-47% of Illegals already receive welfare. Or those living in HUD housing above our own citizens. As food and utility costs increase, so will the burden on TaxPayers. Why should Americans continue to PAY for illegals to VACATION in American illegally? Why should I bear the cost of paying for someone, from a foreign Nation, giving birth here when my neighbor can't afford to pay for his RX, or must choose between heating or food? I want to know why we pay $346 BILLION dollars per year for illegals, WHO HAVE NO RIGHTS TO BE HERE, when Americans are being forced to live in Shanty Towns!? I'm HUNGRY! I have my BFA! and I'm barely employed, in fact I do qualify for Food Stamps, $17 per month! If illegals where not here I would probably receive three or four times that amount. Maybe, enough to see me, an American, through this horrendous economy!
If Quiet Amnesty passes through this Congress, it would be the single most devastating blow to the American economy in US history. And this fact will always remain. These illegals have already disregarded the Laws of the United States Government by crossing our border, and should not be allowed to stay simply because they got lucky.

Oh wow! A New York Senator has waved the magic wand and declared the border secure......here in Houston we have illegals shooting cops, running extortion and slavery rackets, and other assorted activities but Sen. Schumer says that a 27% decline in a wave of hundreds of thousands means it's all good now....cool
