Torture Photos: To Release Or Keep Classified?

The head of the American Civil Liberties Union argued today that a release of the military torture photos is an "essential" step to reaffirm American credibility.

"When we're talking about 2,000 photos that talk about abuse or torture under American custody, we're not talking about a few rogue apples," executive director Anthony Romero said on CBS News' Face The Nation. "We're not talking about a few rogue soldiers. We're talking about decisions made at the highest levels of our government. And the only way to deal with that would be to have an investigations and prosecutions to ensure accountability."

Romero (left) added that, "the release of the photos, the release of the documents, the release of the memos that we have been arguing in court for six years is an essential part of ensuring that our government gets back on track.”

A federal court had ordered the pictures be released, a decision previously supported by President Barack Obama. But this week the president announced he would seek to block their release.

Congressman Peter King (R-N.Y.) argued that the photos should be kept classified.

"They serve absolutely no purpose and it is absolutely wrong to say this was approved at the highest levels of government. Not just President Bush but President Obama," he said.

He agreed that those involved in torture should be punished, but argued that the perpetrators of abuse at Abu Ghraib prison had already been tried. King also said, "to somehow think that, by floating all these pictures out here, somehow we're going to find that somebody at a high level was involved ... is absolutely wrong."

King said a release of such photos puts American troops in danger and "serves no purpose other than … to denigrate and downgrade the military of the United States."

Meanwhile, Romero said he is sure at some point the photos would be released to the world community. "The question for this president as he inherits a terrible mess, a terrible mess left to him by his predecessors, is, how do you make a clean break with that past? How do you ensure that you put us back on the footing that is going to restore our standing at home and abroad?"

Contrarily, King suggested Mr. Obama sign an executive order barring their release. "I would just say, let the American people decide if they want to believe the American Civil Liberties Union or President Obama," he said.

When asked about Dick Cheney's request to declassify CIA memos on interrogations (with the stated claim that such revelations would support his assertions about the success of the Bush administration's interrogation practices), Romero said, "I actually agree with Vice President Cheney. Show me the proof. I think it's a bluff. Frankly, show me the proof. You can redact the documents to make sure that any information gleaned doesn't jeopardize national security. We shouldn't have classified information, but show us the extent to which that information is actually valid."

Romero cited a Vanity Fair interview with Robert Mueller in which the FBI director said no credible evidence of impending terror attacks was obtained through the use of torture.

"The fact is George Tenet, who was appointed head of the CIA by Bill Clinton. says they did work," said King. "The fact is, General Hayden, who was appointed head of the NSA by Bill Clinton and then head of the CIA by President Bush, said they did work."

"Show me the proof," said Romero."

Horse pucky. These Republicans are ashamed of what "their" president, GWB allowed under the guise of American security. He left a black blot on our sacred American flag and they only way to rid ourselves of the blot is to own up to it and wash it out with truth. The Bush adminstration was evil and should be acknowledged as such.

There are three groups trying to investigate this issue of "responsibility" when it comes to "breaking International Law" in the form of torture. Cheney wants documentation that supposedly "testifies of the accurate confessions given while under enhanced interrogation techniques", the ACLU wants an accountability for human rights issues, and a small group of people who want congress to investigate.

The only group that hasn't asked for an investigation is the United Nations. They are the ones responsible for having an International Law prohibiting "torture" of any kind and they are not stepping forward into the debate or investigation(s). Why not??? Doesn't International Security matter or are they just too concerned for their own Nations security to really be able to make a lasting impression on the International scene?

So you idiots could care less about our troops being in MORE danger.. All you care about is how you look to the reat of the world? You're a bunch of self serving clowns. Who gives a crap about how we're looked upon. No other country deals with what we do. When anyone needs help they come to us but when the shoe is on the other foot most of them turn their backs. Give me a break.

you forget we signed treaties forbidding torture. we are obligated to comply with those treaties. it doesn't matter if torture got useful information or not. that didn't work ate nuremburg and it doesn't work today.

when other countries see how america handles it's treay violations that is what they base their behaviors on. not what words we spout in defense of them. by their deeds shall you know them.

    let's see now?

how did south africa handle the same thing?

seems they found a way to handle it and still let people see the truth. why cannot america.

    besides it's probably all moot.

it certainly seems international treaties were violated and if we refuse to honor those treaties and to protect people like bush and cheney
(just because they were president and vice-president) from being brought to justice, then we have NO moral high ground and deserve the name of "outlaw nation"!

mr president you must do the right thing and clean the board. either this nation is a nation of laws and we either honor our treaties or we do not! if you protect bush and cheney from the international courts (or even our own--they have no endemic immunity) what does that make you and your administration? just as unjust and un-righteous as theirs.

you profess christianity? well think of thisone. the God of the Bible never conpromises right and wrong and if you do contrary to those principles, then as when the rabbi cautioned how to handle the apostles "we fight against God"

ahh, but politicians have exemption with God over political matters and He understands....right?
wanna kid yourself about your religion Mr. President? so many posture religion for political reason. are you the same Mr. President?

Releasing these photos, as well as the documents Cheney wants released (Although I doubt they exist) is absolutely necessary to reestablish the integrity of the USA. If they are withheld, the fallout from the cover up will be far greater than any damage from the photos. Obama is dead wrong on this.

mnbrant - CIA and Members of Congress keeping their jobs more than saving any lives of serviceman if what I hear about them are true.

    ----
This may be somewhat true but the fact remains that the president didnt change his mind about releasing them until the top brass had a talk with him....I think the president put all the bs politics aside and realized that releasing the photos actually would hurt troops.

And, could someone please tell me why Nick Berg was in Abu Ghraib during his beheading? Funny, he was beheaded just as the public was getting photos of the abuse there. We know Nick Berg was held by military police prior to his beheading, we know he was wearing an orange jumpsuit that they used in Abu Ghraib and the same chair that he was in can be seen in abu ghraib photos, also the EXACT same paint color is on the walls as in Abu Ghraib. There are other disturbing conclusions by experts that should be investigated. Could Nick Berg have been beheaded by our own soldiers in order to somehow make the public feel less empathy for these Iraqi prisoners? Judging by the photos I've seen, they were definately capable of doing this. Who really killed Nick Berg? Really?

McHineguy , if you think this is about waterboarding and humilitation, you haven't done your homework. This is much much worse than that. Someone has to answer for this. These photos, this evidence, is evidence of war crimes. War crimes created and ordered by the highest levels of American power. If the Bush regime gets by with this, than we are just as low life, just as guilty. We simply cannot allow this.

Tell the American soldiers the truth. Tell the rest of us the truth. Stop handing out the hearts and minds baloney. If our soldiers, of all ages, are forced to swallow this baloney, they are indeed IN for it. People, in general, hate to be snookered. Why do you think this only applies to American people?
And stop telling the easily swayed civilians that any American who feels different than the status quo is a radical danger . We are the descendants of veterans, we are the descendants of those who had ears not just mouths, we had fathers in the Pacific and fathers in Europe.
We remember Vietnam. Have we have lost the last 40+ years of the Vietnam tragedy, to pay attention to the likes of Lindsey Graham? I watch Senator Grahamn on C-Span, attacking people on interrogations and I wonder. He sure likes the torture, that fellow. No, he ain't us.

Now that I think about it, suppressing these photos it probably more about CIA and Members of Congress keeping their jobs more than saving any lives of serviceman if what I hear about them are true. The deniers are winning!

Heh you censored my blog again! All I said was that the CIA has already revealed itself to be dummys even before the torture pics were discovered. These pics only validate the point I made about the CIA before Obama came to office. Note I didn't say anything about FBI or Home Security. I have no problem with them. At least they don't lie to the American People.

We went into Iraq and showed all of Saddam's dirty
    underwear,,,now it's our turn.

Did the military themselves see and accept this
extremely childish behavior?,,,,If they did, what
    were they thinking?,,,,If they didn't then let's
    make sure they do.

You have to look in the mirror to straighten
    your tie.

And if the other photos are worse than these
already released, and show more than merely
a bunch of U.S. soldiers thinking that their
portrayal of devient sex is worth
recording for posterity then so be it,
show it and let the stuff fly where it may.
