Sykes' Limbaugh Jokes Spark Anger

(CBS/The Early Show)
It's a good thing Barack Obama didn't have comedian Wanda Sykes write the jokes for his White House Correspondents Association dinner speech on Saturday.

While the president's quips went over fairly well – he joked about his teleprompter use, chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel's propensity for profanity, "fresh young face" Arlen Specter and Hillary Clinton offering a kiss after returning from swine-flu infested Mexico – Sykes' speech has prompted an outpouring of anger from conservatives upset over her comments about right-wing talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

Much of the speech, it should be pointed out, involved Sykes poking fun at Mr. Obama and members of his administration. (At one point, she quipped that she didn't need to see Mr. Obama's nipples – a reference to shirtless pictures of the president.) But the speech also included shots at Republicans, including Sarah Palin, and at one point veered into a relatively personal and vitriolic attack against Limbaugh.

Watch the video here:

"Boy, Rush Limbaugh said he hopes this administration fails – so you said you hope America fails," Sykes said in reference to the talk show host's past comments. "…To me, that's treason. He's not saying anything differently than what Osama bin Laden is saying. You know, you might want to look into this, sir, 'cause I think maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker, but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight."

The comment prompted a mixture of boos and laughter from the crowd.

"Too much?" Sykes asked the president, who was grinning. "But you're laughing inside."

"Rush Limbaugh – 'I hope the country fails,'" she continued. "I hope his kidneys fail, how 'bout that. He needs a good waterboarding, that's what he needs."

Sykes also said of Dick Cheney: "He scares me to death. I tell my kids, I say, 'Look, if two cars pull up and one has a stranger and the other car has Dick Cheney, you get in the car with the stranger.'"

The speech prompted highly-trafficked and conservative-leaning news aggregator the Drudge report to post a big picture of the president and the words "President Laughs At Wanda Sykes Joke About Rush Limbaugh: 'I Hope His Kidneys Fail'"

On MSNBC, Pat Buchanan said the joke was "was really over the top," adding, "it's gonna underscore that point that these people are all sort of laughing their heads off at the Republicans and conservatives."

The Washington Times' Amanda Carpenter told CNN's Howard Kurtz the joke went too far. "I mean, there is a willingness for these jokes to be a little saucy at these dinners," she said. "I think that went over the line."

Wrote Michelle Malkin of the entire speech: "Liberal comedian Wanda Sykes indulged in Palin-bashing, Rush Derangement Syndrome, and post-Bush/Cheney-induced psychosis while leftist journalists rubbed elbows with politicos and Tinseltown eye candy."

Twittered Jim Treacher: "Nothing better than smug lefties saying I have no sense of humor over a joke they’d be SCREECHING about if it targeted one of their own."

Added British journalist Toby Harnden:
Imagine if a comedian "joked" that Obama was a terrorist who was guilty of treason and should be tortured and allowed to die. There would justifiably be an outcry.

But when the "joke" comes from a liberal, Obama-supporting comedienne and the target is a right-winger then the likes of Hilary Rosen and Donna Brazile are on CNN saying it's just comedy and Limbaugh is "fair game."

And Obama laughing when someone wishes Limbaugh dead? Hard to take from the man who promised a new era of civility and elevated debate in Washington.
UPDATE: White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about Sykes' jokes at his briefing today.

Gibbs said that while he hasn't talked specifically with the president, he believes "there are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy."

"I think there's no doubt that 9/11 is part of that," Gibbs continued - apparently in reference to Sykes' "20th hijacker" comment.

To me, Rush Limbaugh IS the republican party. The things he says are exactly what the republicans are all about. His snide snotty remarks are a reflection of the policies of the republican party. He has his and he could care less about the plight of the people of America. Someone suggested that I listen to him back when Clinton was new in office and after listening for a few days I could not believe what I was hearing. Since I too am from Missouri I decided to find out all I could about him. I know people from his home town so I called to see what his background was. Turns out he is from a very wealthy family and no one could stand him when he was a kid. He was a spoiled brat wanna-be and people would actually hide when they saw him coming. He was a draft dodger using the excuse that he had a cyst in a delicate place and couldn't serve. I had the exact same thing and it was removed and I served with NO problem. He couldn't cut it in college and I don't know how many times he has been married. Add in his little drug problem and you have a complete picture of the republican hero. He may have boatloads of money but he is still a loser. But he is the standard bearer for the Republican party.

"Limbaugh can dish it out, but he sure can't take it"

"Rush deserves everything he gets"

While I don't agree with everything Rush has ever said (or the way he phrases them), I also don't think Syke's comments were justified. Two wrongs don't make a right, no matter who did it first. Jokes like these have always been tasteless, and always will be. Plus, just because someone is a "comedian", doesn't make everything they say funny. Some things are just not laughable, and being a comic doesn't change that.

I may be wrong, but concerning what Limbaugh allegedly said about America failing, what he actually said was he hopes Obama and/or his policies fail. This isn't the same as hoping the country fails. I personally hope Obama's policies get trashed and better solutions are thought up. Obama has socialist ideas, and people should take these ideas with a grain of salt.

By the way, I'm no liberal or conservative. No labels, just human; as are Sykes and Limbaugh.

Liberals hate Rush Limbaugh because...

...they know he is right, and that they can never publicly admit it, or it will cause their ideology to come crashing down to the ground.

Deal with it, Liberals.

Rush is right about 25% of the time.
The other 75% ranges from half truths to pure BS.

Kind of like posts from One-Screwwed Up-American.

And anyone that considers rush/fox to be a source of "information" is going to come away not knowing anything, they're only in it to sell advertising. Such as, what's a liberal?

Every sentence that rush uses with any form of the word "liberal" is a lie...

If any of you manure spreaders are in the top 2%, making over $250k a year, and I'm just guessin' here that would be zero, but just in case...you should be fighting just like Rush, O'Reilly and Hannity to keep your tax breaks, your capitol gains tax cuts and estate tax breaks given to you during the Gilligan regime.

But if you are not in that top 2% and are fighting their fight for them than you are just another (clueless) chicken clucking for the Colonel.

Rush the NUT JOB.

In the Media when somebody gets busted for anything and its reported in the news its fair game.

If your strung out on Oxycontin and you get busted then its on YOU. YOUR BUSTED & its fair game to make jokes about it. With all the MUD that Rush throws at everybody else, no sympathy for Poor Porkey Rush and his Oxycontin addiction.

Good Job Wanda !

LIMBAUGH: But during all this growth I haven?t lost any audience. I?ve never had financially a down year. There?s supposedly a recession, but we?ve got - what is this May? Back in February we already had 102% of 2008 overbooked for 2009. [applause] So I always believed that if we?re going to have a recession, just don?t participate. [laughter]

Rush is bragging to his fat-cat donors about his success and mocking the recession and its victims. Limbaugh's living large while radio boss Clear Channel implodes

Clear Channel's fall from business grace remains epic in its proportions. In 10 years time the company has gone from dominating a flourishing radio industry to a corporation that now teeters on the brink. (Clear Channel stock traded for $90 a share in 2000. When the radio company went private last year, pre-crash, the stock was already down in the $30s.) Lots of over-extended, debt-ridden media conglomerates are struggling through today's deep economic recession, but few face a future quite as perilous as the one staring back at the San Antonio radio giant.

And yet Clear Channel's most famous employee, Rush Limbaugh, remains oblivious to it all. I sometimes wonder what Limbaugh thinks when he reads about the not-so-slow-motion collapse of his radio employer while lounging in his 24,000-square-foot Florida estate or motoring in his $450,000 car to the airport to ride in his $54 million jet. Does Limbaugh feel bad? Does he feel a little guilty? And does he ever think about giving some of his riches back so that thousands of radio colleagues wouldn't have to be bounced to the curb?

I'd love to hear how all the laid off workers feel about RushBo's arrogance. I'm sure they'd all love to not have to participate in losing their jobs. But I don't think they have a choice; do you, Rush?

TIME's Joe Klein says Rush Limbaugh delivers misinformation and lies to the American people

By John Amato Monday May 11, 2009 12:00pm

TIME's Joe Klein went after Rush Limbaugh and didn't hold back any punches. The topic was Wanda Sykes and her routine at the WH Correspondents Dinner. She hit Rushbo. and conservatives are so upset.

KLEIN: This is just comedy. And we're talking about a guy in Rush Limbaugh who is inappropriate half the time I hear him on the radio.

CARPENTER: Yes, but he doesn't go to the White House Correspondents' Dinner to... (CROSSTALK)

KLEIN: But he describes himself as an entertainer. Wanda Sykes, entertainer. This is entertainment.

CARPENTER: But would you hold up Rush Limbaugh at these dinners to tell those jokes?
KLEIN: So could Rush. He could be in a lot better taste on a daily basis in which he is delivering misinformation, lies to a large audience in America. That is far more serious than telling a couple of jokes at a banquet.

KURTZ: Well, "lies" is a strong word, but we'll come back to that another time.

Klein was surprisingly candid in his assessment of Limbaugh and what he says on the air. Kurtz got stunned when Joe called Rush an outright liar. He also defends Sykes right to do what she will as a comedian.
