Homeland Security Chief Defends Report On Right Wing Extremists

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said intelligence reports highlighting the potential terrorist threats posed by right wing extremists groups are "not accusations, they're assessments."

The report, which states that right wing extremist groups could use the nation's poor economy and the election of the country's first black president as recruiting tools, has come under fire from Republicans who say the Obama administration is unfairly singling out conservatives and military veterans.

But Napolitano said the reports are "not intended to infringe on anyone's constitutional rights by any stretch," during an appearance on CBS' The Early Show Thursday.

"These reports are issued periodically through the intelligence and analysis division of the Department of Homeland Security. And what they are intended to do is to give state, local, tribal law enforcement what we call situational awareness. What's out there? What do they need to be sensitive to?"

The report noted that military veterans who have difficulty reentering civilian life are susceptible to recruitment, as was the case with Timothy McVeigh, whose 1995 attack on a federal building in Oklahoma City killed 168 people. (Click here to read the full report.)

That drew the ire of the House of Representative's top Republican.

"To characterize men and women returning home after defending our country as potential terrorists is offensive and unacceptable," Ohio Rep. John Boehner said.

Napolitano conceded that, if she had it to do over, "perhaps a few words would be changed," but "the overall impact of the report, and the purpose of the report, which was for state and local law enforcement purposes, that remains the same."

Napolitano was speaking from Mexico City, where President Obama is scheduled to meet with Mexican President Felipe Calderon about the drug-related violence plaguing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Calderon has said that guns from the U.S. are a big factor in the problem, particularly since the federal ban on assault weapons expired in 2004. But while the U.S. is taking measures to reduce gun trafficking, Napolitano said the government was not looking to reinstate the ban.

"Well, that simply is not part of the plan that we're talking about here."

Napolitano said U.S. efforts would focus on increasing border checks, utilizing better technology, more manpower and gun-sniffing dogs.

I think the scariest thing about the release of this report is reading the truly idiotic comments from all you so-called "patriots." Guess what, folks, some characteristics of extremists are that they overeact and are irrational. Guess what you offended folks have been doing. As far as I'm concered, this report from Homeland Security is spot-on. The truth hurts, friends. That's why you're reacting so irrationally. Another characteristic of extremists: they think that the world revolves around their narrow and pathetic little vision of reality and everything thus becomes a threat to that little narrow vision. Sound familiar?

Where you all of you when the Bush administration started listening in on our phone conversations? Or when he decided it was okay to kidnap people and put them in secret (and not so secret) prisons and not even charge them with any crime? Or tell them why they were being held? Or allow them to contact a lawyer or family? They just disapeared. Then, they decided it was okay to torture people. Then, after they told our lower-ranking, young service people to torture, they decide to put them on trial and throw them in military prisons. You are lost causes! I give up. goodbye

I am no longer concerned about terrorist attacks from outside of our country. Our terrorists are now from within, within our Government, Banking System, Wall Street, & CEO's. The surest way to take down our country is through our economy and the greedy individuals of this country are managing that all on their own. Big deal if some in the banking industry are showing a profit. They should, they have all of our money. The whole point in bailing them out is so they can start giving back to the people. I can't see that this has happened.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled against the vote of its people and other states are following suite. The voice of the people doesn't matter anymore; in fact their voices are being stifled. The people have had no voice in the bailouts or stimulus package. This Homeland Security Memo is just one more step in taking Constitutional Rights away from American Citizens. This has nothing to do with politics, or shouldn?t have anything to do with it. It has to do with the survival of our country and the laws of the land. Our Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Right to Bear Arms, etc. are all being questioned. This is scary, really scary.
Our country is on the verge of falling apart. We are no longer world leaders. What is next?

I think you need to take a look at the following bill, upon which these measures are being taken. It seems to be pending in the Senate, but was passed in the House with overwhelming bi-partisan support 400-35. Although is unclear whether or not the Senate passed the bill, there was funding included in the stimulus for the agencies and programs that would be in charge of enforcing the provisions in this Act.

So what is happening now is merely political gamesmanship again by these Senators who are objecting - since many of them also were aware of the budgetary provisions for DHS and where that money was allocated.

It seems the federal government is clearly threatened by the unrest now of many in the country, and has become a "hate" group all it's own - targeting now dissident Americans who are outraged at their now flagrant disregard for our Constitution.

Here is the Senate version of the bill:

This whole uproar reminds me of how anyone who protested the Iraq war, or spoke out against Bush was called a TRAITOR. Now, we hear some Republicans calling for cessation; or for Obama to fail! You people need to step back, take a breath and get over the fact that Obama and the Democrats won! Our country is in shambles and Obama is trying to help us to recover! He is lowering taxes for 95% of Americans. He really does care about our country. Stop listening to Fox News. They are not trying to do anything positive for our country. Try, for just a week, to listen to other news sources on T.V. You are being brainwashed.

Everyone knows that there are left-wing extremists, right-wing extremists as well as extremist-religious groups. Why are Republicans so upset about this report, unless they are members of those groups? If you are in the Klan, or a White Supremacist, you are who the report is about. If you are the guy down the street who loves his neighbors, but considers himself politically conservative, you are not even hinted at in the report! Give me a break! I am a liberal, but not a left-wing extremist.

Do you know how many deaths, property thefts, and children now strung out on drugs the left wing and neocon liberals have caused due to their supporter of "foreigners" rights over their fellow Americans and countrymen living in the border states.

Do you think this drug war now in Arizona would be happening at all, if Napolitano, the Arizona legislature, and federal government had secured those borders with border fencing immediately after 9/11.

A border agent was run over in the middle of a desert crossing recently - do you think he wasn't "terrorized" by those drug dealers? Do you think the the young girl kidnapped or raped by an illegal Mexican is not "terrorized."

Do you know just how many deaths the liberals in this country are actually now responsible for? Just because you are holding the gun, or dealing the drugs, doesn't make you any less responsible for the costs of the lives and property losses now in the border states - in sticking up for the "poor children" of the illegals - rather than the "poor children" of your lawful countrymen being marketed to by the dealers out in front of the local high schools and middle schools.

The deaths by the liberals far exceed in number those of any claimed "right wing extremists" by literally thousands.

I can just vision Osama bin Laden rolling on his cave floor laughing his a$$ off at the United States. Oboma has succeeded in giving a morale support to all International Terrorist, who wish to see the downfall of the United States. The United States Department of Homeland Security is not only responsible for protecting the United States but also has a major control over the activities of every federal, state and local law enforcement agency in the United States. We all know how Muslim Extremist, such as those in al Qaeda, feels about women. Now, how do you think the International Terrorists feel about going up against the United States, when the person responsible for protecting the United States is a woman? Now, just imagine how fearful the International Terrorists are of the United States when the head of its Department of Homeland Security is a lifetime member of the Girl Scout. Does Janet Ann Napolitano even know which side of the gun the bullet comes out of? I was not in fear after 9/11, but I am now.

I am blown away by this report. What happended to our Constitution. This is so unreal. It is hard to believe that educated people actually put a report like this together and then put it into action. I am dumbfounded. I think that we need to get rid of all of the people that were involved with this report. They are the ones that are a threat to our country and it's freedoms.

Comment on: Homeland Security Chief Defends Report On Right Wing Extremists!

Its time for Obama & his Administration to put aside their politics of hate & personal destruction towards the pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-family, pro-military, pro-democracy, & get back to doing the work of the American People.

Are you people for real? "Politics of hate & personal destruction"? I've read almost nothing here but hate and bitterness towards Obama. So let me get this straight: you state your opposition to the characterization of right-wing extremists by making comments that make you sound like a bunch of paranoid, delusional right-wing extremists? Oh well, I guess it takes a high level of delusion to hold on to such pathetic opinions.

All you "conservatives" on these message boards are so delusional and bitter it's truly pathetic. You people really do not have any vision or ideas on leading this country forward, so all you can do is revel amongst yourselves in your silly and pathetic conspiracies about communism, fascism, socialism, or whatever else you can come up with to continue to delude yourselves into justifyng your tired, old bitterness. Face it, Obama is president today in large part because your leaders had congress and the presidencty for six of the eight years leading up to today. Yeah, great job they did....You people simply represent the segment of this country that is bitter and desperate to find someone to blame.

Looks like CBS is liberal, they are taking up for this act of hate towards Christians. Funny the nation founded on Christian Principles has a government putting Christians in the same boat as the 911 terrorist. Looks like it is going to be a long 4 years.

What factually challenged liberals don't understand is that fascism is to the left of them, not to the right. Fascism concentrates more power into the hands of the government. Conservatives want the government to get out of their lives. Our nanny state gets more closer to the left every day.
I'm kind of surprised that this report doesn't mention the left wing sociopath groups that are out there The eco-terrorists, the klan (invented by and for the Democrats during Reconstruction as their mercenary wing of the Democrat party), etc. We've always had more liberal terrorist groups than conservative terrorist groups (the Symbionese Liberation Army, the Black panthers, the weathermen, etc, etc. I'm also pretty sure that this report unfairly depicts conservatives because this bureaucrat political hack can't stay centrist or unbiased.

Throughout history, one of the first tactics of tyrannical dictators is to try to demonize their political opponents. By lumping pro-life, anti-big goverment, pro-gun, pro-Constitution Conservatives into a group in which this evil woman who works for Obama's current Homeland Security calls "Right Wing Extremists", that is exactly the tactic the dictator Obama is using here.

Notice he has no problem calling those who oppose him politically terrorists, but he does have a problem calling the jihadists terrorists.

WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.

YESTERDAY'S TEA PARTIES WERE A POSITIVE. KEEP IT UP.

WE THE PEOPLE MUST TAKE A STAND.

Can't think of a case where it is NOT true! Have YOU ever seen tape of some of the Klan events, what they have done to people? Just before the Election there was a trial in Kentucky, where the Southern Poverty Law Center took the Klan to court for damages suffered by and American Citizen who just happened to look different. They kicked and beat the man until he suffered brain damage!

And in your mind, that is proof that righties are evil but lefties are harmless? Ever hear about anything Stalin (a leftist if there ever was one) did? How about what China does to its own citizens? Left-wingers are as prone to violence and ignorance as any right-winger.

If only the world were as simple as you think it is.

"LMAO Obama the facist (sic)"
--airmanC141

So now Obama is a fascist? That's odd, becuse up until today I have only heard him referred to as a socialist or communist (aside from him being a Muslim and not a natural born American).

Wow, Obama is a talented guy --either he is both a fascist (you might want to learn how to spell the word you are using to insult someone, by the way) or he is a socialist --or maybe he is both.

MEMO TO THE FAR RIGHT: Learn the meaning of the words you use to smear the president, it will help your credibility.

"it is fine with the Dems. in Washington to profile "American citizens" who own gun in accordance with our constitutional rights and who fought and serviced in our armed forces to keep this country safe."

Actually, this report was comissioned by the Republican Bush White House last year. You might want to consider knowing what you ar talking about before talking.

The report is an assessment of potential risks --nothing more. It is exactly what we have DHS for. The report is not accusing anyone of anything.

Let's not forget, the most serious home grown terrorist attack in US history was a disgruntled former US soldier. The most recent attack in Pittsburgh that claimed the lives of several police offices was a former (albeit disgraced) marine. No one is suggesting that all or even many veterans pose a theat. But only a fool would suggest that highly trained soldiers who may be upset with their return to civilian life are a unique cohort.

I am a veteran, and not only am I not offended by this report, I welcome it as did the president of the Veterans of Foreigh Wars.

The assessment also suggests the possibility of cyber attacks from the lunatic left but I don't see anyone complaining about. I know we have this romantic view of all our soldiers and sailors as heroes, but at the end of the day, they are also just people, some of whom make serious mistakes.
