Katie Couric's Notebook: 111th Senate

In a scene like no other on Capitol Hill, the man appointed to fill Barack Obama's old Senate seat showed up today, and was quickly shown the door.

Senate leaders don't want to seat Roland Burris because he was appointed by disgraced Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, even though Burris did nothing wrong.

For now, they're relying on a technicality - that the Illinois secretary of state never certified the appointment. But many legal experts think Burris would prevail in court.

Former comedian Al Franken wasn't sworn in either, because Republicans are challenging his 225-vote lead out of almost three million cast in Minnesota's Senate race.

The battle over that seat could take weeks. The fight in Illinois could drag on for months. With our economy in such bad shape, Congress has a full agenda, starting with Mr. Obama's stimulus package. This is one distraction neither he nor the Senate needs right now.

In the recent world,
Money lost liquidity and morals lost solidity.
In future world,
Morals will get solidity and money will get liquidity.

the opening session was a joke. the poor woman that tried to open the session had to pound the anvil/hammer about twenty times trying to get control of the floor. they heard it and just chose to keep talking, ignored her, and were very rude. what class!! wasting time and our money. why were all the kids on the floor? it was a huge distration. who do you think paid for the kids lunches today? us. these folks pay for nothing(gas, food, travel, dry cleaning, etc) and they do little while in session and even accomplish less. what was really accomplished today? speaker of the house. that was a done deal before the session started. swear in the new senators. wow. how much money was spent and wasted on todays session? half the members don''t even attend the sessions. they should be made to attend 100% and be present everyday on the floor. how many days are they in session a yr. if they can''t be present then they shouldn''t be a senator. that''s the job folks. it''s the good old boys country club folks. slap em on the back, take care of each other and each others family. from the banking and securities mess(which i believe Dodd and Frank should''ve been held accountable for). what where those clowns doing the last few years? playing golf, sailing, and drinking scotch on the tax payers dime. great job guys!!
