Shoe-Thrower Still Hidden Away

Randall Joyce is CBS News' Baghdad producer.

(CBS)
The lawyers representing Muntader al-Zeidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at President Bush, tried again today to see their client and were again denied access.

Al-Zeidi has not been seen by his family or by any member of the defense team that his family has assembled with the help of his employer, Baghdadiya television.

Read yesterday's post about what this case says about the Iraqi justice system.

Family members have expressed concern that al-Zeidi may have been severely beaten after the incident and is being hidden from view to keep the nature of his injuries from the public.

His continued detention is becoming a political issue here in Baghdad, where thousands have marched demanding his release. The television channel he works for continues to run extended programs featuring interviews and phone call-in segments demanding his release.

Yesterday’s parliamentary debate on the status of British and other coalition forces in Iraq was interrupted by angry demands that al-Zeidi’s legal status be put on the agenda. The session spiraled out of control and the Speaker of the Parliament, Mahmoud Mashadani, walked out threatening to resign.

There are signs the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is pushing back against the wave of bad publicity following the incident. The government now says al-Zeidi has written a letter apologizing for embarrassing the Prime Minister in front of the world.

Al-Maliki’s media advisor, Yasin Majeed, claims that in that letter the reporter admits: ”His big, ugly act cannot be excused,” and that he appeals to the Prime Minister’s “fatherly feelings” to be forgiven.

Under Saddam he would have been tortured and murdered the afternoon of the news conference. The fact that they are discussing a letter of apology is an amazing story. This guy should thank Bush for his life. Is suspect that Bush has asked Maliki to make sure this guy is released as a demonstration of the human rights progress some of the Iraqis are making.

Of course CBS would never point out the fact the there is tremendous progress in actually giving people some rights and not just summarily killing them. CBS is a left wing biased propaganda machine which cannot be trusted to report " news". Dan Rather was the norm for CBS, not the exception.

I find it impossible to believe that thousands of Americans gave up there lives so this guy could be secretly laocked away, and possibly abused for throwing a shoe. President Bush should request averything concerning this guy immediately goes public. No body deserves this kind of treatment just for embarrasing a National leader.

This criminal is already in Guantanamo Bay being tortued to heck. Hurray for that. For all you LIBS that think this criminal is a hero - you are truly ZEROS.

No one here has called him a hero but what he did does not justify the abuse he has probably received by a government that is supposedly democratic.

Image is everything in the Middle East...from Turkey''s resistance to our sending US troops through their country to invade Iraq...to the Muslim world reacting to Freedom of Expression in the Neatherlands depicting MUHAMMAD in cartoons...to our own President railing about Iraq''s imminent attack on the US and having WMDs. It is all political to individual agendas. Would be nice to know the truth, but then what would politics be without lies as proffered as truth...??? Iran''s Amadinejad is as clear an example of ignorance of the truth as one can get regarding NO *** in Iran or the HOLOCAUST or the Arab war to crush the state of Israel in 1948 at its creation by the UN....

The real tragedies of Rwanda and Darfur show what roles religion and racism play in the destruction of individuals and groups...Whether Muslim or Christian or Jew...the TWO commandments that require we love God and treat our brothers as ourselves....go ignored...so we call it POLITICS. The ultimate lie is to avoid the truth at all costs.

There''s unnecessary glorification of this guy...he just exhibited some v bad behaviour...& that shouldn''t be condoned ...Bush showed what grace under assault can be like...surprisingly this guy & his supporters never showed their empathy or raised outrage when 911 or even the recent atrocities at Mumbai occurred-all of which were carried out by the followers of his faith & who now have crept up to selectively rally for him- just shows how biased they are..he must be left to face the suitable consequences of his unacceptable ways towards a visiting dignitary

*** Yea... atleast us liberals aren''t afraid of shoe throwers... Omg... its an arab with a shoe... it is a weak of mass destruction! stupid idiot republicans... Why don''t you republicans worry more about coming up with a better candidate for president than amnesty mccain? How about having a candidate that doesn''t support amnesty for millions of illegal foreigners?

*** typical idiot republican! You supported amnesty mccain who wanted to give over 20 million illegals amnesty and would have taken your job... and yet you still supported amnesty mccain even though he is more liberal on amnesty than even the democrats are.. You idiot republicans don''t want to arrest the real criminals like the business owners that are corrupt and your greedy politicians that take millions of dollars in bribes.. instead lets bring a shoe thrower to justice... what idiots! that shoe thrower didn''t do anything to you! Yet the corrupt politicans stole millions of dollars that should have gone to you... again... who is the worse criminal?

The detention and torture of this guy shows just how inhumane and unjustifiable our presence in Iraq is. Bring the baby killers home now. There is no more pretense about humanitarian reasons for staying, they are just there to steal the oil.

We must get the International Red Cross involved in protecting Muntadhar al-Zeidi%u2019s safety. We appointed Maliki to be president and we have the authority to demand that he release Muntadhar al-Zeidi. The United States has already suffered enough disgrace with our notorious Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo torture camps.

This man is being beaten and tortured by a US puppet government and Bush%u2019s sock puppet acting in our name. We appointed this government and we keep it in power. That is an international crime against humanity in itself. The Maliki government is acting as our surrogate and is a national disgrace to our once proud country. I grew up in a country were decency and fairness ruled. It has now sunk to the level where people are beaten and tortured for speaking out against us. It is no wonder that countries around the world are treating us with contempt. We are not the same United States where I grew up.

If this Iraqi is in fact being tortured, perhaps he should have thought about that when he decided to use his shoes as a trajectories. If Bush hadn''t have had such quick reflexes, the shoes could''ve caused serious injury, including losing an eye. It was pointed out in one of the many replays that one of the shoes hit our flag. I guess to many neither having shoes thrown at our president, or at our flag matters at all? The guy knew exactly what he was doing, what it culturally represented to his fellow citizens. I''m sure he was also hoping to seriously injure the president by hitting him with his shoes. The guy threw them rather forcefully.

Credibility2: You dither about the symbolism of a flag and Bush the butcher. Your kind have murdered over a million innocent women, children, and men who''s only sin is to live in a country that owned oil, and not have the military to protect it. You had no justification to invade Iraq and no justification to stay there. The whole pretence for your invasion was a fraud, and yet you stay on. Get out of Iraq and quit disgracing our country.
