The Celebrity Shoe Thrower

Khaled Wassef is part of the CBS News terrorism analysis team in London.

(CBS)
Journalist Muntadar al-Zeidi, 29, has been working as a correspondent for Iraq's Al-Baghdadiya TV since it launched in 2005. Co-workers describe him as a rather quiet and composed.

He was kidnapped by an unknown armed group while on his way to work on Nov. 16, 2007. His captors released him three days later without claiming any ransoms.

He is known for opposing the U.S. presence in Iraq — a stance often openly expressed in his reports.

Baghdadiya, which put a still picture of President Bush bending down to avoid Zeidi's shoe on its homepage, demanded the release of its journalist in a televised statement broadcasted yesterday. (He's being held and questioned by the Iraqi authorities.)

An anchor of the network, which broadcasts from Cairo, read the statement twice, urging Arab and other foreign media agencies to show solidarity with al-Zeidi.

According to Baghdadiya, several Iraqi tribal leaders and members of parliament contacted the channel to voice support.

The incident was front-page news for almost all of the Arabic press.

(CBS)
Al-Quds al-Arabi's editor, Abdel Bari Atwan, dedicated his entire front page editorial to the incident. He titled it "A Farewell Worthy of a War Criminal."

The Al-Ahram newspaper: "Iraqi Journalist Throws His Shoe at Bush and Calls Him a Dog. Bush: 'Those Things Happen When Freedom Prevails.'"

The incident was also broadcasted (repeatedly) on almost all Arabic TV channels.

Al-Arabiya repeatedly broadcasted footage of the shoe attack, which made the opening headline of Aljazeera's main morning news bulletin today.

Sharquiah TV reported that a hundred lawyers had already offered to defend Zeidi, including the late Saddam Hussein's attorney Khalil al-Duleimi.

Here are some of the comments left by readers of the Arabic press:

From Quds al-Arabi:

  • Reader from Morocco: "The journalist must be released and Bush and the other Iraqi journalist who apologized in the name of the Iraqi press must be put on trial."

  • Reader from Tunisia: "May Allah have mercy upon your mother, and release you from prison. You're a hero. A hero, a hero."

    From Asharq al-Awsat:

  • Reader from the Palestinian territories: "Muntadar al-Zeidi talked to Bush in a way that matched the atrocities he committed and was heard by the entire world."

  • Reader from Saudi Arabia: "This journalist is a source of pride to all Arabs and Muslims."

The American military worldwide now needs to ponder if what this reporter did will inspire a wave of shoeicide attacks not only in Iraq but wherever Americans are?
A serious threat in my opinion......

American reporters should have done the same thing back in 2003 when Bush and his henchmen were lying their arses off in order to attack Iraq. That might have saved 200,000 Iraqi and 4,200 American lives, as well as
    TWO TRILLION DOLLARS!

Muntadar al-Zeidi, will show himelf a real hero when he throws a shoe at the terrorists in front of the cameras of the world. Bush made possible his action, he could not have survived throwing a shoe at Saddam!!!!!

If Saddam were still in power in Iraq he would have been treated to a trip to the zoo to feed the lions.

The guy was a lousy shot with two attempts using size 10''s. It was probably the pressure that made him choke. Must be quite embarrassing to get the only opportunity anyone has had to put it in the face of the leader of the only supreme power left on the planet and then blow it. And from only 20 feet away? Man, 20 feet is barely two car lengths. My grandma coulda done betta. And she''s dead.

I am not here to argue about Bush, but as a father of a son that spent over a year in Irag, I want to say that we freed this society of a dictator and his sons that were one of the most dispicable in history. I notice the people of Irag are in the street demonstrating their support for this unappreciative journalist who demonstrated his sophisticated ability to communicate with his shoes. Would they have been able to demonstrated for any cause under Sadam? Why do they have this freedom now?
Iran with their developing nuclear weapons is just waiting to fill the void if we leave before there is an established government; however, in view of the fact that many Arab countries support this incident, I say we should leave NOW and let the various religious sects kill each other and treat their women like some sub-human species. Then, when you need our help......eat your *** shoes

Muntadar al-Zeidi is a hero to the whole world. A new world leader is born. This story has gone front page right around the globe. Now we have to demand that he is released from detention. Those Bush stooges can not sweep this one under the carpet, free Muntadar al-Zeidi.

Just another example of how primitive most of the Middle East really is. The Iraqi people owe the USA their lives and freedom. If nothing else, that journalist should be locked up for stupidity.

It makes me sick to read the posts of haters in this country. I would expect the idiocy from these morons we helped liberate from a tyrant, but the *** being spewed from Americans on here is sick. It''s unfortunate that it''s going to take a catastrophic nuclear attack on our country for all the coolaid drinkers in here to realize people like Sadam and Chavez and Iran''s idiot president want to kill us. Nobody has messed with us here since 9/11 so I would''nt be too down on W. Newsflash!! They are still going to try to kill us, even with the King of Koolaid Obama in office. But I''m sure he can talk them out of it.. so everyone feel safe. I just hope our armed forces aren''t reading this b.s. you guys are writing in here. At least sound like you have a brain if your going to spew your hatred.

It is shameful that an Iraqi Shiite would do such a thing. If Saddam were still in power in Iraq he would have been treated to a trip to the zoo to feed the lions.
