Obama's Puppy Problem

When Barack Obama promised in his presidential acceptance speech to get his daughters a puppy, it set off a flurry of speculation, particularly online, about just what kind of puppy the family would bring to the White House.

Some observers have made the case for their favorite breeds, while others said the president-elect should seek out a mutt. Many argued that Obama should set an example by getting the dog from a shelter instead of looking to a breeder.

Obama addressed the puppy question in his first press conference as president-elect today. Noting that the debate over what sort of dog her should get had generated major discussion on his Web site, the president-elect jokingly called it a "major issue."

"We have two criteria that have to be reconciled," Obama said. "One is that [daughter] Malia is allergic so it has to be hypoallergenic."

Obama added that while many breeds are hypoallergenic, he would prefer to adopt a dog from a shelter. The problem?

"A lot of shelter dogs are mutts, like me," Obama said. "So whether we're going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household."

There is a great mixed breed that would fill the bill...the golden Doodle. It is a hybrid of golden retriever and poodle. They have the best traits of both...hypo-allergenic, intelligent, out-going, and very trainable.

Of course, my vote would be to name it Yankee...golden doodle.

I hope the Obama''s do select from a shelter or rescue organization. Not only will it save a dog''s life, it will show that President Elect Obama really is trying to relate to ''the real people'' of America and not the elite.

The Obamas should adopt a Doberman Pinchser...

They are highly intelligent, loving & affectionate and they will keep the girls busy.

I would love to give the Obama family a AKC Miniature Schnauzer. I am a breeder and find the breed itself to be a very loving and hypo - allergenic dog. I have families that have purchased pups from me due to children with allergies. These girls need a puppy and we have some due Nov. 22, they will be ready to move in with the family.

I own an Irish Jack Russell and there is no nicer, smarter, cooler dog on the planet. These are all sweet tempered and good with children and crowds. He should absolutely check the breed out.

I vote for a poodle/irish water retriever mix and do a nation search of shelters. we''ve gotten several purebreds from shelters, just not papered. the mix i''m suggesting is complementary and similar in looks, temperament and size, both are low dander breeds, which will reduce some of the allergic reactions. getting a mix adds to the gene poole and results are less chance of inbreeding and health problems.
good luck!

It think its great Sasha and Malia are getting dog. Animals lovers are excited, and it is simple fun to speculate. Why do people have to be so negative, we know their are important issues facing the country, but this topic takes the edge off. Yes, you can find a hypoallergenic dog at a shelter or pound, especailly with all the foreclosure dogs being turned in...

A dog breeder taught me when I was a youth that there were only 3 true non-shedding breeds in the AKC. Those breeds are the Poodle, Bedlington Terrier and the Kerry Blue Terrier. All others produce an undercoat and shed to some extent.

On the Early Show Sunday Morning, a comment was made in regards to a dog that would be a DOG, not a little furry thing. The Kerry Blue Terrier would be just that (maturing to 35-40 pounds). Google it and you will find a wonderful companion.

This morning I was awakened by sly remarks by one of the anchor women on early sat. morn. trying to crack jokes about their not being a dog that is non allergic. I hope she was not picking on the Pres. elect ALREADY. IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE. WE HAD TO DEAL NOW YOU''LL HAVE TO DEAL. ITS ONLY FAIR. IOVE THE SHOW PLEASE DON''T MAKE ME CHANGE THE CHANNEL.

I think the kids would love a mini-doxie or dashhound. They are good for people with allergies. They are constantly grooming themselves (like a cat) and the short haired ones do not shed. Best of all, they are so sweet and lovable; the kids would just adore it.
