Palin Defends Hank Williams, Jr. After He Says, “Obama’s Not Real Crazy About” The National Anthem

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) - At a Sarah Palin rally here tonight, country music star Hank Williams, Jr. took the stage to sing the national anthem, as he has done at Palin events across the country for weeks. But this time, the singer decided to share his personal views about Barack Obama with the crowd.

“You know, I’m usually at ‘Monday Night Football' tonight, but Colorado, this is a lot more important tonight,” Williams, Jr. said. “Join me now in our national—you know, that song that, uh, Mr. Obama’s not real crazy about, we’re singing it right now.”

The crowd cheered, and Williams, Jr. sang the national anthem. The country singer then went into an ode he penned about the Republican presidential ticket, a song called “McCain/Palin Tradition,” which has lyrics referring to Palin as a “good lookin’ dish.”

Palin then stepped up to the microphone and defended Williams Jr.’s right to free speech.

"We want to take a minute here to thank Hank Williams Jr.,” Palin said. “Over the past couple of months he has traveled with us. He and his most beautiful family stops all along the way this campaign trail. Now this is the last rally that we get to do together, and he's been just a great inspiration—never one to hide his opinion or be afraid to share it. Hey, he exercises those First Amendment rights. We love him! Yes. So we want to thank Hank and we are going to see him tomorrow night on the other side of victory, my friend."

Though Paln defended Williams Jr.'s rights, she said nothing to the crowd to disabuse the crooner’s notion that Obama isn’t fond of the national anthem. Palin has, however, previously said that she is sure Obama loves his country and doesn't doubt his patriotism.

The absolute lowest form of political rhetoric, defended by Sarah Palin. (of course) Sorry, but the lady just has no class.

How pathetic that Palin cannot bring herself to distance herself from this extremist. I have no idea who Hamk Williams is but Palin should know that silence equates to agreement. If she has any aspirations of high office, she will need more than the votes of the mobs that go see her and listen to her and her extremist friends.

A lot of people would not be "fond" of our national anthem. The theme of which is WAR. The tune itself was written by a British composer and deals with heavy drinking and then getting a woman with whom to fornicate. "And long may the Sons of Anacreon intwine,
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus''s Vine." Love of country? Pride in our country?

Pardon me for saying this, but F the coal industry. I suppose we should also protect the petroleum car industry, the nicotine industry, the asbestos industry, or going way back, the cotton industry.

It is time to levy emphatic fines on any new plants that will poison our air. Just like we did with nicotine and tobacco, protecting people''s right to good health far exceeds an industry''s right to profits.

Somebody tell this b***h to shut up and tell the Republicans that they are so out of touch with reality it''s beyond belief.

I''ve served my country in Vietnam, voted both sides of the ticket. Seen 10 elections and without a doubt Palin/McCain are the most digusting ever.

If you don''t live in the "real" America, don''t believe in a piece of rubbish, bill owing, tax owing, Joe the Plumber, and are not white, then you''re just no good at all.

Obama was not my guy at the start of the campaign, I was going to write in someone else. I decided after many days of reading Republican racist (thinly veiled at times)and fear and panic postings, that the O man gets my vote.

Thanks for showing me what the Republican party has come to represent.

Ain''t it the truth. Can you imagine what kind of howling we would have to hear from the Republicans if Obama had belonged (or his wife) to a successionist group. I have voted on both sides of the isle, have voted for independents, voted for Ross Perot the first time, and have voted for Libertarians. But in all the years I have been voting, it is only the Republicans in the last couple of elections that have questioned a candidates patriotism. It is a disgusting tactic, a loser tactic, and the worst that politics has to offer. Republicans need to get their sh** in order, or they will go the way of the Dodo bird.

AND another thing. I am not so crazy about the national anthem myself. It was adopted by Herber Hoover in 1931. Another one of those grand Republicans. It is almost impossible to sing and it is referencing a battle in a war that most folks know nothing about, the war of 1812. I think we should change it to America the Beautiful. Now, does this make me unpatriotic or what????

Hank Williams should be reminded that he currently earns money by singing every Monday night for a league which is 50% African American. He needs to cease and desist with his continuous implications that Brack Obama is "other" or feel it in his pocketbook.

Hank Williams, Jr. is now significant? This beer guzzling redneck is both racist and, based on his comment about Sarah Palin, sexist as well. Much as I would like to see this country more civil and united, it is comforting to consider that the whole fascist, Christian, redneck political base which soaks this stuff up will be increasingly isolated. So, go fire ''em up Hank and have a brew or two on me!

I do have a little empathy for Hank Jr. He fell and broke his face once. I don''t listen to him and wasn''t that concerned about what he said. So, he''s a beer guzzler, at least lets hope he doesn''t do any drugs. The hoodies on my corner do enough of that. The bad thing is, I felt bad for them until they stole my cd player. PALIN, ARE YOU HIDING AN ABORTION

No, she''s hiding treatments for Pelvic Inflammatory Disorder (PID).

Todd & Sarah were swingers before and at the beginnning of their time they owned snowmobile dealership. Why do you think Todd''s partnership with Brad Hanson broke up? It wasn''t just that Sarah and Todd "hooked up". Todd and Sarah had decided to stop swinging, and Sarah broke her promise and continued to have "No Strings Attached" *** with Brad - until Todd found out the hard way - from their doctor.

Read more about it here:

The ful story will come out AFTER the election. So much for her dreams of being the "Conservative Christian" candidate of 2012.

These modern Republicans are a disgrace. The only "JOE" they care about is Joe McCARTHY, because he exemplifies their approach to politics:

If you vote Republican you are a patriot and and American.

If you vote for anyone else you are a traitor and "not" American.

This is slime.

This is disgusting.

This is John McCain.

This is the gutter slime that is today''s Republican Party.

Goldwater and Reagan were 10 times better than these pathetic excuses for "leaders". Hopefully, the GOP will show these slime merchants the door after they (badly) lose this election.

MERCHANTS of HATE and FEAR ARE HAVING THEIR EFFECT

It''s clear that Steve Schmidt, Hannity, Rush, Coulter, Malkin, Kristol, Liddy, and FOX NEWS are finally having their desired effect. The hate filled mobs attending these McCain and Palin rallies are the harvest from years of seeding hate and fear, while spreading the slander of the far right.

I suppose these MERCHANTS of HATE AND FEAR make a lot of money trying to keep their party in power and spreading their filth. However, the COST TO THE COUNTRY and our political health is incalculable.

These people who spend their radio and TV time ginning up hate and fear should be ashamed. They are the most UN-American public figures we have seen in quite a while.

What is worse is that the once proud GOP has become dependent on these MERCHANTS of HATE AND FEAR. The GOP is becoming the party of the unruly mob. They cater to the fears of many good Americans who are looking for an answer to their anxieties about the direction of the country.

The GOP''s MERCHANTS of HATE AND FEAR tell these Americans that is is OTHER AMERICANS (!) who are the ENEMY. They divide. They overtly state that people who disagree with them are NOT AMERICANS- that those who do not follow the MERCHANTS of HATE AND FEAR are "not like us".

Shame on these MERCHANTS of HATE AND FEAR and their disdain for their fellow Americans.

It is intresting. If someone talks anything against Obama, the person is not credible or racist. The only credible person right according to you libs is Obama, and only Obama. But when Obama pulls the race card like currency bills, oh he is so right.

Joe - not credible. Has no plumber license

Hank Williams - a drunkard

Sarah Palin - dumb blonde

all other republicans - are racists

Democrats - think tanks

Liberals - know everything and what they think is correct

You stupid drunked donuts. How I wish Republicans win tomorrow and send you guys back to your bunkers - continue your known talent defaming Palin every day. Democrats are jobless idiots who are angry on everything that normal people (conservatives) do.
All that your media folks have on their plates are scoops on Repubicans - that when I see feel like Puke

I have read some amazing comments posted by many of you and I must admit it is quite surprising how many people are willing to pass judgment without basing them on fact.

It is unfortunate that Hank Williams Jr. made those ridiculous outbursts during an official campaign outing with the Republican candidates but his racist attitude is nothing new. If you listen closely to some of his prior recordings, lots of them have the underlying overtones of racial segregation. Guess he is still a bit upset that the South lost the Civil War or something, who knows?

The truth is that the story about Obama not placing his hand over his heart during the playing of the National Anthem is not true. The actual song that was being played was America the Beautiful and there is no requirement to place your hands over your heart or to stand in attention for the tune
And in case you did not know, this election is being followed by nearly every country in the world. It is a crying shame that the rest of the world now knows what many of us right here at home have known for quite some time that America''s racial past is really not past, It%u2019s STILL HERE!

Shame on you, the select Racist few for causing such a stir in what could have been the best example of a successful election in-progress.
I cannot put the entire blame on the Republicans, however, if you all will take a moment to think back, it really started during the earlier season within the Democratic Party. They all tried to use the race card and other scare attics to do the same thing. The only thing new is the insertion of socialist and terrorist. Again it is so sad to let so much progress as a Nation go to the way-side.
I can honestly say I am quite ashamed of the attitudes and public display of a few.
