Palin: Obama Will Raise Taxes On Special Needs Trusts

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

(PITTSBURGH) - In her first policy speech as a vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin laid out details of how she would commit to helping children with special needs.

The Alaska governor, whose infant son Trig has Down syndrome, said that a McCain/Palin administration would allow more flexibility for parents to choose their children’s schools, committed to fully fund the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, and promised to reform and refocus special needs services.

Though she has previously declared that this issue should be nonpartisan, Palin said that Barack Obama’s tax plan would hurt families who establish financial trusts to care for their special needs kids.

“Understandably then, many families with special needs children or dependent adults, they’re concerned about in this race our opponent in this election who plans to raise taxes on precisely these kinds of financial arrangements,” she said.

“They fear that Sen. Obama’s tax increase will have serious and harmful consequences and they’re right because the burden that his plan would pose upon these families is just one more example of how many plans can be disrupted and how many futures can be placed at risk and how many people can suffer when the power to tax is misused.”

Palin said that Obama has “an ideological commitment” to raising taxes, while she and John McCain will lower taxes to promote growth.

“We’ll protect the savings and the earnings of American families, and we’ll allow more of that investment and the prioritization via our own families to make the difference here,” she said.

All I hear is what Obama is going to do and nothing abut what they''re going to do. And I''m supposed to listen to some chick who doesn''t even know what her job will entail if elected. Sarah, go home, take voice lessons, read the Constitution and then come talk to us.

Is the "Joe the Plumber Tour" headed for Indiana today? I heard the "Jonas Brothers" are the opening act.

Governor Palin, thanks but no thanks.

You can keep your tax plan. I ran compared the two tax plans on several web sites. Under your plan, my family receives $228. Under Obama''s plan, my family receives $1000 more.

My family needs Obama''s tax break.

Unlike you, we don''t even have a clue how anyone could spend $150,000 shopping in 30 days.

Americans are hurting and can''t afford McCain and Palin. The trade policies that McCain and Palin support have harmed Americans. Job losses are mounting and all McCain and Palin talk about is that free trade is good. Colombians earn $200/month, they will not be buying products from America. McCain and Palin only care about Joe the CEO.

I pity McCain, he''s shown his true colors with his disgusting campaign. I used to hold such a high level of respect for him, I felt like he may actually run a respectful campaign. I do think that Obama has run negative ads of his own, but from where I sit it was because people were urging him to respond to the horrible level of attacks slung first by McCain. And I respect how Obama has remained cool and calm in the face of the worst political ads in our history. This whole Ayers thing is ridiculous, and McCain knows it. He doesn''t even believe his own attack lines, that is probably the worst part. What a truly sad man, terribly unworthy of the office he seeks.

Sure, any special needs individual who is lucky enough to have a NET EARNING of $250000 per year in INTEREST FROM TRUST FUND will be affected a bit. Mind you, we are talking about trust funds well above $5.000000 here. How many kids will be affected, I wonder? I''d love to see statistics on that.

Scott, you''re deceptive.

Most of what Palin said had nothing to do with Obama. There was one little bit, seemingly out-of-place IMO, but yet it takes up over half of your entry. I think the Obama comment took less than a minute...yet, gets all the space!?

Can you use off time, to report if there''s any truth to the policy and tax assertions? Is that too much to ask of CBS?

The Supreme Court ruled againist Special Needs families placing children in private schools without the consent of the District in 2005. The Supreme Court interpreted Title VI, the Special Education federal mandate. See website above. The Mc Cain/Palin plan disagrees with the conservative judges in this regard. I have a Special Needs Trust for my 24 year son. The Obama tax plan should not affect his tax situation in anyway. The McCain/Palin Health Care Plan has the potential of forcing my family into bankruptcy. Guaranteed Access Plans do not work for families with chronic health issues.

there is nothing specific in the McCain/Palin plan that will help these kids and their families. The McCain/Palin health care plan is a joke. Palin actually cut the proposed budget of special needs education in her state.

How can people take this woman seriously? How can she say the things she does? Does she really believe that saying something makes it true? There''s a narcissism here that is scary. Investigations show she abuses her power by trying to get that Trooper fired...her response is that she''s been absolved. Hard facts show that $150,000 was spent on clothes, she denies it. Over and over she does this sort of thing. Is she an idiot, or does she think WE are???

Palin''s policy announcement promises with no plan therefor no policy followed by a rehash of the McCain / Palin disproven misrepresentations of the Obama Tax Plan. Clearly just more of the same negative campaigning from McCain / Palin where policy statements include no real policy statements at all.

Another example of Palin pandering and the gullible''s sucking it up.

What would be more valuable is assistance for special needs PEOPLE, across the board.

Stop playing on American citizen''s heartstrings and flashing your wide-eyed baby around. When the baby is no longer a child, he''s going to continue to need assistance - and when he''s no longer a child, he''s no longer cute and cuddly and becomes "someone else''s problem".

There''s plenty of legislature in existence for special needs children. Let''s see some REAL assistance and legislature and work put in for special needs PEOPLE, young and old.

Palin is the biggest spender we''ve ever seen in politics.

Who is McCain''s highest paid staffer for the first half of October? Surprise, it''s Palin''s makeup artist.

Cost of Palin''s makeup artist for 2 weeks?
$22,800

Cost of 45 days of Palin shopping with the RNC credit card?
$150,000

Laughter after Palin repeatedly claims she cuts costs?
Priceless

With cost cutting like Palin, America will be bankrupt. Oh wait, Bush has already driven us to bankruptcy. I guess Palin''s just more of the same.

Hopefully there will be more than her usual talking points and generalities.

It would be great to get answers to some real questions:

1. Do you support increased funding to and the expansion of Medicaid Waiver programs to ensure that people with special needs can live and work in the community?

2. Do you support making certain that all services are portable, across the states and counties - that people don%u2019t have to get at the end of the line when they move to another state?

3. Will you increase funding to special education, and improve special ed programs so that less parents have to opt out of sending their special needs children to public school because homeschooling is better than no schooling?

4. If McCain were President, and he were to propose drastic cuts in Medicaid, what kind of advocacy would you do for special needs parents to prevent funding cuts that would put us back to the 1960%u2019s?

5. Are you in favor of spending more time, money & attention on the horrific status of mental health treatment and services across the nation?

6. Would you be in favor of ensuring that services are provided to people with disabilities who need them, in spite of their IQs not being in the right range? Specifically, how would you address this problem?

7. If Roe v. Wade were overturned, what special programs might you institute to support the high influx new parents of special needs children who might not have otherwise given birth?

It is obvious that a woman will never be in the white house as the president or vice-president. this is a sexist country, and there is no respect for woman. The only reason Hillary came close is because she probably takes male hormone injections and grew her own balls, and no can tell whether Hillary or Albright is a man or woman.

This is nonsense. There are many different types of trusts and the law is very complex. Is she talking about a non-profit charitable trust? Obama''s plan will have no effect on such an investment vehicle. Of course no details, just blurring gibberish from Palin. I would need to here from a true expect before I could give any credence to what she says. This looks like a red herring.

and Palin, along with Mccain are ideologically committed to lie and distort. Why is this joe story so powerful when it simply is bad math on Mccain''s part?

If Joe the Plumber thinks he can''t afford to buy the business under Obama''s tax plan then he really needs to consult a good accountant. Obama''s plan lowers taxes on the first $250,000 Joe makes. On the money over $250,000, Joe would pay 39% under Obama, instead of the 36% he now pays. That''s 3% more taxes, not exactly break-the-bank if you have already made $250,000 at a low rate. In fact, if Joe makes $280,000 then his taxes will only go up $900 a year (that''s 3% of $30,000, the amount over $250,000). Plus, Obama will give him a $1,000 tax credit for every job he creates, and tax credits for every employee that he provides health insurance for. Under Obama''s plan, Joe''s business will actually pay LESS TAX than it does now, as long as he has even just one employee.

I am dissappointed the Pig of earnmarks who hired a lobbyist to make sure Alaska get its share of earnmarks now wants to cut it to fund kids with special needs. Its unfair because you leave others out. This selfish B**tch benefitted while she was governor, but now because she won''t need them anymore if she''s VP is selfish and inconsiderate. Some States depend on them it''s also good for research. It was okay for her $402,000 arctic fox study but she laugh at fruit fly projects. Why do she think we are so stupid. Palin exposes McCain s spending frees as an even greater campaign hoax. This list of exceptions is so long it is difficult to tell if anything will be frozen. And that relatively small amount of earmarks in reality has grown in the McCain / Palin fantasy so many times it boggles the mind so their fabricated offset will cover all their additional spending. Apparently neither candidate can balance the budget without delving into their fantasy version of imaginary numbers.

Palin is deliriously out of touch with mainstream people. How many special needs children have families that can afford to establish trusts for them? 3 maybe 4%? And wealthy people who can afford to set up trusts are likely not terribly concerned about a few more dollars of taxes to be paid on that trust.
Someone needs to explain to Palin that allowing special needs families to choose any school, public or private, for their special needs child will literally break the education budget of every state.
What a joke Palin is. SHe doesn''t know what she''s talking about.

Palin thinks she knows about special needs? Then she should know that it was the fruit fly study that helped find one of the chromosones that causes autism.

But that was a study by those evolutionist scientists so I guess it doesn''t count.

She is dumber than a box of rocks.

On another note, some friends from overseas, where even Joe the Plumber has become well known, think Americans are off their rocker even having these two on a tciket -any ticket. They are an international embarassment.
