Palin Meets The Press On The Plane

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

(GREENVILLE, N.C.) The long, gloomy reign of what one journalist dubbed the “No-Talk Express” has come to an end. For the first time since becoming a vice presidential candidate on Aug. 29, Sarah Palin ventured to the back of her charter plane to answer reporters’ questions for almost 15 minutes.

Though video cameras were not allowed to shoot the unexpected media availability, Palin answered questions on subjects ranging from Troopergate (“Tasergate,” as she put it) to Tina Fey. She was warm and friendly to reporters, shaking everyone’s hand and addressing some by name. Still, most of her responses were sprinkled with the same talking points she delivers regularly in stump speech across the nation.

Asked why she has been focusing her remarks over the last few days on the questionable connection between Barack Obama and 1960s radical William Ayers, rather than on the tanking economy, Palin defended her tactic.

“Well, Americans are caring about the problems in the economy, of course, and wanting to know what those long-term solutions are that our ticket can provide and what the other ticket is proposing,” Palin said. “So when you talk though about what it is that we are proposing and what it is that Barack Obama is proposing, again it is relevant to connect that association that he has with Ayers, not so much he as a person—Ayers—but the whole situation and the truthfulness and the judgment there that you must question if again he's not being forthright in all of his answers as to how did you know him, when did you know him, why would you continue to be associated with him?”

When asked directly by a reporter, Palin denied that she was suggesting Obama was dishonest. But she did seem to question the Democrat’s integrity during another portion of the press conference.

“It makes you wonder about the forthrightedness (sic), the truthfulness of the plans that he is telling America in regards to the economic recovery because that is first and foremost on American's minds,” Palin said.

Asked why her husband Todd changed his mind and decided to return to Alaska to testify in what is widely referred to as the “Troopergate” investigation, Palin assigned a different label to the Alaska ethics inquiry.

“He's always been an open book about this whole ‘Tasergate’ issue, wanting to speak with investigators, wanting to speak and is with attorneys, everybody involved,” Palin said. “The personnel board in the state of Alaska is that board tasked with dealing with any issue involving the governor, the lieutenant governor, or the attorney general. What the investigation turned into, led by a Senate Democrat, has been kind of a goat rope, a very partisan and very controversial type of investigation."

For the benefit of those (like me) unfamiliar with the expression, Urban Dictionary defines “goat rope” as “when good intentions go bad, messily.”

“It's an open book,” Palin said. “Nobody has anything to hide. Nobody's done anything wrong. My choice, and my responsibility to replace a cabinet member, an at-will exempt political appointment whom I did replace, because his strengths were in other areas. It wasn't in running an entire department. There was some, some duties there that he was not able to fulfill, so my choice, my responsibility had nothing to do with my husband or any of my staff members asking a guy to step aside and take another job, and he didn't want to take that other job.”

Palin was relaxed and jovial with the “mainstream media” — an amorphous entity she often derides on the campaign trail. Aside from handling the serious questions, she took some time to look at a photograph one reporter had of himself as a young hockey player alongside his very own “hockey mom.” She was noncommittal when asked if the travelling press might be allowed to assume babysitting duties for her seven-year-old daughter Piper.

Asked if she would appear on “Saturday Night Live” to give Tina Fey a taste of her own medicine, Palin laughed.

“I would love to,” Palin said. “I love her. She's a hoot, and she's so talented and it would be fun to either imitate her or keep on giving her more material and keep her in business.”

Palin’s extensive media availability was entirely unexpected. When she suddenly appeared on the other side of the curtain that divides the press area from the campaign staff, it sent at least one reporter scampering back from the plane’s lavatory and another jolting awake from a nap.

If Palin's travelling press corps had forgotten one of the most important lessons from Journalism-101, they'll remember it now. Always expect the unexpected.

It''s not surprising that she''s given too many contradictory statements about the ''Tasergate'' investigation. Why Monegan was fired, whether it was for unsatisfactory work or bias, will be solved. There is so much TRUE evidence behind her two-face here: http://www.dailysource.org/palin

So Miss Piggie finally decided to stoop to let the little people know what she thinks.

But it''s not a pretty picture. Miss Piggie was quoted (although video cameras were not allowed) as saying over and over "moi first, moi first, moi first".

Finally, Fozzie the Bear had to stuff a sock in Miss Piggie''s mouth.

How good of Queen Palin to walk among the unwashed masses of the evil mainstream media, smilingly dropping her venom bombs and pretending that they''re cucumber sandwiches.

Did she learn her unique form of sentence construction during her 6 years of struggling to achieve her BA in sports journalism?

Palin did not have in interview with the press for her first 14 days, or a press conference in her first month. This site has tons of details on her relationship with the press including video footage of the McCain campaign saying she%u2019ll only be allowed to talk to the press if it helps McCain win -

http://dailysource.org/palin

It also has clips of the Tina Fey SNL vids this article talks about. On serious aspects, it%u2019s loaded with research, videos, excerpts and links to hundreds of articles, including many from newspapers and TV stations in Alaska.

PALIN NEEDS TO READ ONE OF THE FACT CHECKERS ON THE INTERNET.(SHE CAN READ, I HOPE, BETTER THAN SHE SPEAKS) THIS B.S. ABOUT AYERS IS JUST HER WAY OF FEELING INVOLVED. I can see it now. The handlers meet, trying to decide what in the heck to do with Sarah their stooge until the election. Someone suggests, "Let''s tell Sarah to say the bad stuff that''s too dumb for McCain to say." Congratulations for a great plan. She couldn''t sound any dumber.

This was hardly a press conference, it was a quick visit designed to get her in and out before the reporters had a chance to collect their wits and ask her real questions. Moreover, since when are reporters banned from videotaping press conferences?

I''m still waiting for a reporter to really press her on how she can possibly justify asking for more earmarks than any state in the country, when Alaska already has more money than any state in the country (so much that it has no income or sales taxes and can afford to SEND money to voters). Then even when congress wised up and forced her to cancel the bridge to nowhere, she still kept the money. In effect, she was taking from Americans in other states that have far less money to start with and giving that money to her own voters in Alaska. How is that fiscally responsible and how does it demonstrate any understanding, empathy or concern at all for Americans living outside of Alaska?!

Scott,

You seem smitten with Govenor Palin.

You were awfully quick to accept Sarah''s explanation of Todd responding to the personnel board but not the legislative board. The legislative one being partisan in nature...only problem, there are 12 people on that board. 8 republicans and 4 democrats. Seems like Sarah''s interests are rather well protected with those numbers.

Why no mention of case involving Gov.Palin''s inquiry going to the AL Supreme Court tomorrow?

Oh, I see readers would rather read about how she *really likes the media* and *Tina Fey is great*.

Do you consider yourself a journalist or a blogger? That might help my disconnect.

You get the sense Scott Conroy thinks he''s so much smarter and superior to Palin. Funny he never picks up on the fact that Palin''s responses such as this one are laser-accurate on target with the pulse of the electorate is in such sharp contrast to the whole subject of Ayers that it''s clearly not Palin''s strategy to use ''radical associations'' to try and ''turn a page'' on an economic crisis.

I''d like to hear how Scott Conroy would answer his own question if he were in his shoes and he had been dispatched to talk about Ayers to distract from the economy.

And after tonights debate wow, nobody should really be complaining that Palin doesn''t answer questions - if they do I think it says a lot more about their vulnerability to getting lost in double talk because both Barack and McCain were just as bad . . . Barack''s just a lot more adept at hiding it.

Sarah Palin is the only good thing that has come out of this election. Thank God for her. The other 3 candidates are all much too alike and put me to sleep.

McCain, who I much prefer too Obama, is still to liberal for my taste. I want a strong conservative in the White House, who can communicate the conservative philosophy in a strong and effective manner.

I want Sarah Palin to be President.

Well,I do hope that Sarah Palin''s answer is "laser-accurate on target" when the mainstream media question her and her husband''s un-American activities. Her husband, Todd Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) from 1995-2002. The AIP want Alaska to SECEED from the United States. AIP founder JOE VOGLER has stated " I''m an Alaskan, NOT AN AMERICAN." I''ve got no use for America or her damned institutions. The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared TO MY HATRED FOR THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT. And, I won''t be buried under her damned flag." In 1993, Vogler was to appear to the United Nations to denounce United states "tyranny" and had persuaded the GOVERNMENT OF IRAN TO SPONSOR HIS ANTI-AMERICAN TIRADE. In 2008, Governor Sarah Palin addressed the AIP convention and said " keep up the good work and god bless you." Sarah Palin has been ''sleeping with the enemy''."Poor judgement" and "guilt by association" are the least of her worries.

It is sickening to see grown men and women falling all over themselves just because an idiot like Sarah Palin deigns to grant them an audience. You, who are on the plane with her, reporting her every move and speech should boycott her plane--not doing so make you complicit in her hate mongering, lies and fomenting violence against Barack. Leave her plane, refuse to cover her campaign. Have some dignity.

How often does Barack talk to the press at the back of the plane?

Because Amy Holmes made a really interesting point about the ''Obama Doctrine'' in practice not including the people of Iraq since Barack wanted to get troops out rather than ''surge'' them in.

She then asks (in light of the fact that Barack has as a chief component of his foreign policy platform to withdraw from Iraq), what''s our moral responsibility to Iraqis in the case that withdrawal goes bad?

Does Barack even talk to the press? If so does he ever answer questions like that directly or does he still stick to the answer that he''s for withdrawal AND he''s for a leaving peace behind and that everything''s going to go great?

Now the Mccain campaign can let Palin give interviews and answer questions from the press because they want her to talk about her attacks against Obama. Palin wasn''t allowed to speak to the press and limited interviews when they wanted her to answer questions. Hillary Clinton put 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling and Palin has set woman back 50 years. The Mccain campaign controls every aspect of Sarah Palin. They tell her what to say when to say it and how to say it. How can Sarah Palin fight for Americans when she can''t even stand up for herself. Sarah Palin is an embarrashment to all women.

I''m have voted Republican, since 1979 when I was 18 years old. But will admit I wanted McCain in 2000, and I did not vote for Bush, because he made a mess in Texas as Governor.

Early I decided to support Sen. Obama, but when Sen Mccain was in the picture I decided to have an open mind about my vote. Well McCain has done a 180 turn.

The problem is Gov. Palin, she seems nice and she had a future in Politics till now. She has all you want in a running , but what Sen McCain has done to her, wow, will damage her for life in politics. She doing all the dirty work for the party, she a pasty for the party and she will be blame for the lost.

Sen McCain again has shown his disrepect for women like always. That in itself has turn me off. I don''t think people really care if she knew about the issues and Washington, please don''t let her out and dry. You pick her and it''s your job to support her and stand by her. You can''t blame anyone else, it was your choice.

Again I will support Sen Obama, and hope that he can bring our country together. I believe as Americans it an honest for us to
elect the best person, without looking a race as an issue. I believe the best is yet to come, and Sen Obama, might be the person bring unity to a country that''s broken in rich or poor, dumb or smart, red or blue, white, latino, asian or black. We are one and unity we stand and fall.

With that said God Bless America and may the next President bring America to being the Best Place on Earth to live.
