Far From Alaska, the Focus is Still on Palin

From CBS News' Jamie Farnsworth:

(NEW YORK) - Despite the fact she’s in Alaska, Sarah Palin is still driving conversation. At a forum on service at Columbia University tonight, which both John McCain and Barack Obama attended separately, McCain was asked to respond to Palin’s criticism of Obama’s community organizing days.

“I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities,” Palin said in her address to the Republican Convention last week. The line was delivered with a sly smile and received with applause at the convention. It has drawn criticism by Democrats who blame the Republicans for belittling community service while praising military service.

Tonight, McCain said, "Look, Governor Palin was responding to the criticism of her inexperience and her job as a mayor in a small town. Of course I respect community organizers.”

He went on to defend Palin’s time as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, with a population of under 10,000.

“I think a small-town mayor has very great responsibilities,” he said. “I admire mayors. Listen, mayors have the toughest job, I think, in America.”

Later, when Obama was asked a similar question, he also heaped praise on the nation's mayors.

"We had an awful lot of small-town mayors at the Democratic convention, I assure you," Obama said. "The mayors have some of the toughest jobs in the country because that's where the rubber hits the road. We yikety yak in the Senate. They actually have to fill potholes and trim trees and make sure the garbage is taken away."

The telling thing about the snarky comment from Palin putting down community organizers is that the Republican audience laughed with scorn. McCain does not respect community organizers, nor Palin, nor the Republican base. For proof, see the video.

In describing Palin''s popularity a recent blogger recently quoted HL Mencken: "No one ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the American public". How can people be taken in by this lightweight from Alaska that has no history what so ever before the American public. It is like an American Idol popularity contest- "Oh, she is so cute and so tough!". When women say they can relate to her because she is a hockey mom- does that mean that they themselves should be running for VP? Are they so dazzled by the media blitz? She has not uttered a single word in public that she has come up with on her own. Is the American public so poorly educated or so brainwashed that they cannot see who is on their side and who is making a mockery of the hard working public? People wake up, prove HL Mencken wrong. Reject the instant popularity of an unknown whose record is in fact a disgrace simply because she seems like a nice mom. Reject McCain for making a mockery of this election!

Your article conveniently forgot to mention that the commentators asked Obama if it would be fair to say that Obama was belittling the value of Mayors considering his negative comments about Palins term as mayor.

By the way it would really be refreshing to find a reporter who is TRULY impartial. They seem very RARE these days.
