It's Stand-Up Comedy Time for Obama as He Ratchets Up Criticism

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

(NORTH FARMINGTON, MICH.) - Barack Obama took it up a notch – or two - at a town hall meeting tonight where he used comedy to mock and ridicule the McCain-Palin ticket.

“I mean think about it, you guys remember this, it was just like a month ago they were all saying ‘experience, experience, experience’,” Obama said as the crowd snickered, “Then they chose Palin and started talking about ‘change, change, change’ - What happened?”

Not since the Democratic primary has Obama been this animated and wound up during a campaign event. His style of campaigning became a bit drab over the summer when he stayed mostly on message. But after Palin’s convention speech received rave reviews, Obama has shown that he is not ready to relinquish the spotlight so easily. His performance tonight looked like a page from his days of campaigning against Hillary Clinton.

“I mean, mother, governor, moose shooter?! I mean I think that’s cool, that’s cool stuff,” Obama said about Palin’s biography.

When discussing McCain’s energy plan, Obama poked fun at his line on drilling. “What were the Republicans hollerin’, ‘drill baby drill’? What kind of slogan is that?! They were getting all excited about drilling!”

He even found a way to make an answer to a question on civil liberties comical. While speaking about the importance of habeas corpus, Obama said, “We don’t always catch the right person. We may think this is Mohammed the terrorist, it might be Mohammed the cab driver. You may think it’s Barack the bomb thrower, but it might be Barack the guy running for president.”

It remains to be seen if his jokes will translate into votes - but at least for tonight, he got a lot of laughs.

Yes, Barack, they ARE excited about drilling. If that surprises you then you need to pop your head out of that bunker a little more often. People are sick of paying nearly 4 bucks for a gallon of gas, dude. Buy a clue.

%u201CFor it before you were against it? I mean you can%u2019t just make stuff up. You can%u2019t just recreate yourself. You can%u2019t just reinvent yourself. The American people aren%u2019t stupid.%u201D
These are Obama''''s own words. Of course, he was talking about himself.

Against the surge and now says it was Joe''''s idea?
Against offshore drilling, now says he''''s for it?
For gun control, now says he ain''''t messin'''' with guns?

Sounds like Billy from the song Razzle Dazzle ''''em from the musical Chicago!

No, the American voters aren''''t stupid and BHO will find that out in November when they send him back to Chicago! Maybe he can try to clean up Chicago. Somebody, somewhere needs to do it.

Hopefully people will listen to message that the McCain/Palin ticket is putting out-- it has no substance-- they are constantly on the attack but have no real plans of their own... I believe people will begin to dig into the policies and decide what is best for them-- rather than trying to make a statement of the first woman VP in the white house..most people that i hear that are backing the McCain/Palin ticket only say things like they like her--her style etch but they don''t know her or her policies-- no real substance -- this race should be on policies and not personalities this is for the PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT OF AMERICA this is not a game

Sorry LeviCro it was hyprocatical to call names.

My question remains if you wish to answer: How does the naval officer son of a four star admiral pose more of a threat to the US than a crypto-Marxist Muslim Black Liberation Theology follower?

Comedian? He''s a clown. He makes me embarrased to see him up there making a fool of himself. And he represents our party? Go figure.

I agree with butterfly. Vote policies not personalities.

Taxes: Lower or Higher?
Defense: Stronger or Weaker?
Energy: More or Less?
Change: Maverick senator or Southside fixer?
Partisanship: Lieberman''s friend or Biden''s friend?

You should choose based on past actions and policies.

Obama has to do more of this.

He should be on a national TV show EVERY NIGHT!!!

The Republicans are banking on Obama losing votes as they portray him and Michelle as "angry black people"...dark and dangerous. That is the gut level subtext of the McCain/Rovian campaign.

The way Obama needs to/can defuse the race issue (and, sadly it is an issue) is to appear over and over and over on national TV as an entertaining decent funny smart guy.

Once the American people get to know him...any lingering prejudice will be cured.

The hardcore racists have been with the Republican party since Richard Nixon...they ain''t goin anywhere.

The big lie con job from McCain/Rove must not be allowed to succeed.

Obama must fight for the life and soul of America.

I used to have some respect for John McCain; tragically he has made a Faustian bargain to get this job...and for what? To satisfy his own egoic powerlust, it''s that transparent.

Shame on you John McCain.

May the Good Lord give Barack Obama the grace and strength to stand up to, and defeat the darkness that would envelope our nation and our planet......

It will be comforting for you guys to blame Obama''s inevitable loss on racism and I''m OK with that. You can continue to think that the policies he espouses are popular with voters and keep on losing.

Wake up it''s not racism it''s his ideas that make him unpopular.

Obama should remember that the cost of living in the newer states like Hawaii and Alaska tends to be expense. You hunt moose to help spread the food dollar.

I guess he does not have to worry about things like that...

"Vote policies not personalities."

Taxes: Lower (for whom) or Higher(for whom)?
Defense: Stronger (Diplomatic and Proactive) or Weaker ("Maverick and Reactive)?
Energy: More (conservation) or Less?
Change: Maverick (senile) senator or Rational thinker?
Partisanship: Lieberman''''s friend or Everyone''s Servant?

You should choose based on past actions and policies.

I completely agree.

He is going to need that sense of humor if the polls keep going like they have lately. Too bad the Dems went from from taking women''s votes for granted to outright contempt for them. I can tell you who is really laughing right now---PUMAS

As standup comedy goes, that''s pretty weak stuff. The Messiah had better stick to his day job, or higher some better writers.

Talk and diplomacy have their place but they''re pretty much useless if there''s no "or else."

Democrats are losing the game with energy. "Conservation" seems to be the watchword with them. It does pretty good on the focus groups and polls. Everyone wants to conserve energy.

But what people say and what they do are frequently two different things. People were also for higher gas prices to spur conservation. Right up until they actually had to reach for their wallets.

But while they are for the concept, they are definitely not for it in practice. Gas hit $4 and people squealed. Now Democrats are saying they are working for lower gas prices.

How exactly that is supposed to work is a mystery to me and many others.

People support "sacrifice", as an idea. But when they''re the ones doing the sacrificing they''re not so supportive. Especially when they see the people who are selling the "sacrifice" ticket are not riding the train.

As for "Business as usual?" How can you view Joe Biden as anything but a marker for the same old, same old?

Just so we are clear, no legislation by the government can force Oil companies to drill, only to give them the rights. They are already sitting on over 10,000 drilling leases on-shore which they have never bothered to drill on. Why should they, it would be expensive and the price of oil may temporarily drop. But Oil companies will always want more leases whether they use them or not, because it raises their asset value.

Just watch, a year from now no drilling will have started on the new leases that Congress gives and well be back where are now.

Obama''s turning into a JohnStewart-type of moron. Unfortunately, he''s running for President. Is he totally bereft of any good ideas that he can discuss intelligently? The more he idiotically rants about McCain/Palin, the more people will realize he has no worthwhile ideas that will HELP our country.

Dear concerned citizens of America and mass media of the U.S.A. [Look into McCain-palin sad, unfortunate, and tragic blunders of dividing this on religoius and cultural basis]. Please stop it and expose it. It is your job.

McCain-palintalk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels, unfair attacks, negativity, lies and impulsivity? [Danger to country and countries needs and challenges.
Is Mccain-Palin ticket dividing us and instigating a permanet cultural clash within our country. The US, USA, and McCain-palin will should repent now before it is too late.
Their attempts to do this to our Greatgrand Nation will fail and once the Media will start doing due deligent duty and cut thru the cloud so called M. Mccain has created.

I like to see Obama having a sense of humor and to mock these republicans. If Obama wants to get some of these women back he needs to talk about how Palin cut funding to the disabled in Alaska..how she cut funding to homeless teenage moms in Alaska..how she let her daughter make her own choice regarding the pregnancy but wants to take away a choice for the rest of this country. He needs to go after the issues females find to be of importance.
