Cindy McCain Tells Katie Couric She Parts With Palin On One Anti-Abortion Position

In a one-on-one interview with CBS News’ Katie Couric, Cindy McCain said she, like her husband and his running mate Sarah Palin, opposes abortion. But unlike Palin, Cindy McCain says there should be exceptions in the cases of rape and incest. The following are partial excerpts from the CBS News interview:

Katie Couric: Some, even Republicans seems surprised that Senator McCain picked a running mate who opposes abortion, even in the cases of rape and incest, and believes creationism should be taught in schools. And I'm just curious, do you believe—or do you agree with that?

Cindy McCain: What I agree with is the fact that she is a social conservative, she is a reform minded woman, she is someone that will shake Washington up, which is exactly what we wanna do. We differ on many issues, we differ with-- across the board with people. We don't have to agree on every issue.

Katie Couric: Abortion has suddenly become, again, a hot button issue, because of her. … Where do you stand on abortion?

Cindy McCain: I'm pro-life, I'm on the record as being pro-life, like my husband.

Katie Couric: So, do you oppose it even in the cases of rape and incest?

Cindy McCain: No.

Katie Couric: No? So, that's where you two differ?

Cindy McCain: Uh-huh [affirmative].

Couric also asked Cindy about the vice presidential selection process and the consideration of longtime friend Joe Lieberman to be on the ticket with him.

Katie Couric: Did you talk to your husband about the prospect of Joe Lieberman as a running mate?

Cindy McCain: We talked about everybody. Sure, I mean, you know, there were a lot of people we talked about, absolutely.

Katie Couric: The scuttlebutt, if you will, behind the scenes, is that Senator McCain really wanted Joe Lieberman to be his running mate, but, social conservatives would find him unacceptable because of his position on abortion.

Cindy McCain: My husband and Joe are very good friends. And wouldn't it be nice to work with your best friend? Of course. But we had to consider other things as well. And reform, being as you know, my husband's most important issue, and my husband felt that Governor Palin was a better fit for that. Joe and Hadassah are two of the best, though, and we love them and we'll remain friends forever.

Abortion, legal or not, is not the problem; s e x u a l ignorance is the problem. Every child (at least 99.9%) will eventually grow up and have s e x. They did 100 years ago and they do today. Whether or not they make good decisions or bad depends on what they are taught...both in school and at home. And yes you can give them all the information they need and still encourage them to wait.....just don''t be suprised if they don''t

Creationism then, creationism now & creationism forever!!!

So Cindy makes an exception for rape & incest but Palin doesn''t.

Why doesn''t she hold her baby? Even when they were meeting McCain on 09/03/08 at the airport. Somone look into this for an American. What I think is it''s not her baby.

Oohhhh...John McCains wife thinks it is okay to murder babies. Of course, John feels the same way, but he has to suck up to the far-right for the time being.

McSame is going to wish he vetted her.

In a February interview with MTV, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin lavished praise on maverick Republican presidential contender Ron Paul.

She had a few nice things to say about another GOP candidate, Mitt Romney. But Palin made no mention of John McCain.

By the way she showed better judgement than McCain did supporting her. Ron Paul is 10 times the man McShame ever will be.

Whats with the freaky outfits Cindy has been sporting? Does she think she''s still young? That crazy yellow number she was wearing the other night with absurd collars made her look like a cross between Count Chocula and Goldmember. Yikes.

Wait till America finds out the Cindy had an abortion before she and John met - it was the 70''''s early 80''''s and they were fanatics back then and rich to boot.

The only way to put this issue behind us is to rescind Roe v. Wade or pass a constitutional amendment for right to life or both. But its like McCain said, neither of those is going to happen until more people in the United States agree that''s where we want to go.

And we don''t agree. And until we do agree, one way or the other, Roe v. Wade is a serviceable compromise.

But by all means, keep working for you''re point of view. And so will we on the pro-choice side.

Thank you McCain for making this thing interesting. You could have gone with boring Pawlenty or Romney. And it would be the same scripted election as the others...new, exciting, change on the left and consistent, boring, sameness on the right. But this is a gamechanger. Wait, the republicans are young, attractive, and extremists?

"I truly believe it would heal this nation greatly if we could just put this one issue to rest permanently."

So why can''t we put this to rest? Because without the right to life, no other right matters. This is the most basic right, coming before liberty and happiness.

im4honesty: I''m with you. Control is really the issue here. I do not have a problem with Palin''s daughter being pregnant. It happens in the best and worst of families. I think it is very brave of her daughter to keep the child and that is what pro-choice really is all about...choice. I am anti-abortion - would never have one - but I truly am not so controlling or arrogant to believe I should be able to make the same decision for anyone else. We would be no better than communists or the Taliban if we did. I also agree with Obama on the issue that families (especially children) are off limits when it comes to politics. You can be the best of parents, instilling the best qualities in your kids, but raising kids, at times, can be a crapshoot. If you could take away this pro-life/pro-choice issue then you would probably take away the crazies, people who believe they can lord over and control what other people do with their lives - something that is truly not the principles our forefathers built this great nation upon. I truly believe it would heal this nation greatly if we could just put this one issue to rest permanently.

America needs to stop talking about ''pro-choice'' and ''pro-life''. The fact is this is an issue of control. To those who believe abortion is wrong it''s a no-brainer... DON''T GET ONE!! You do not, however, have the right to tell others they must believe the way you believe. What would your next crusade be if your won the abortion fight? Would you then want to make homosexuality illegal, because you don''t believe in it.
Would you follow one topic to another until people are arrested for eating fried food?

That is the mindset of the TAliban. You people are just as crazy!!
