Palin’s Daughter Pregnant

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has announced that her 17-year-old daughter is five months pregnant. The announcement is “intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child,” says the Reuters news service, which carried the first report.

(AP)
In a statement, the Palin family says that Bristol Palin is “about five months pregnant” and that she intends to marry the father. “We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," the Palins said in the statement. "Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.”

The Palin family asked the media to “respect our daughter” and her privacy. According to the Reuters report, John McCain’s campaign was aware of the pregnancy when the Arizona senator selected Palin to be his running mate last week.

Update: The following is the full Palin statement as released by the McCain campaign:

"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

Update: Asked about the revelation while campaigning in Michigan, Barack Obama said, "I think peoples families are off limits and people's children are especially off limits.” CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic has more.

Yeah, I bet the McCain camp was aware of the pregnancy! I have no problem with the kid being pregnant but you have to question if the McCain camp really vetted this woman. This is only day 3 this could be a very interesting ride.

The only person that "looks stupid" is the one who claims moral (read: religious) superiority, yet fails to teach her children how to prevent pregnancy out of wedlock. This woman is incapable of leading this country. What a joke.

I''m glad to know that the GOP will spin this as a "positive" for the McCain campaign.

What other moral lessons have the yet to teach us?

I seem to recall that John Edwards disclosed to his wife Elizabeth well in advance of his declaring his candidacy about his infidelity and the two kept their mouths shut. This was far more egregious than Palin''s unmarried daughter getting pregnant. The story would''ve been worse had Palin''s daughter opted for an abortion. Dem critics are never satisfied, no matter what the aspect of the situation and will use every angle to try and make their caustic points.

Why is it that anytime someone says something bad about a Democrat or his family, there is so much indignity. But seems to be perfactly OK to bring out bad stuff (ie. Palin''s daughter''s pregnancy)about the other side of the isle.

17 and pregnant. So, who taught her those morals. So much for saving yourself for marriage. There you go kids, another teenage pregnant role model. At least Mom can get her hooked up with all of those State of Alaska benefits. Don''t marry Palin''s sister though, Palin will call your place of work and try to get you canned.

Wow that teen is really cranking out the kids, first "brother" Trig and a second child already.
Is there nothing else to do in Alaska?

Sad, so much for republicans and moral values. The selection of Palin is was a disastrous pick. McCain''s judgment should be called or will be called into question.

as a democrat, I find Palins actions quit admirable, to come forward with this took many meetings and discussions and probably focus groups in the last 24 hours to get this news out.

If Sarah Palin really wanted to disprove the rumors about Trig''s birth mother and also wanted to protect her daughter''s privacy, why didn''t she just release medical records for the boy''s birth?

No the McCain camp was likely not aware. They have just sent people to Alaska to start the vetting process!

ah yes...Palin-the ETHICS REFORMER.
Wasn''t Gov. Spitzer of NY also an ethics reformer? At least HE had the guts to step aside. Will she do the same?
Ethics, like charity, begins at home.

Somehow Gerry4422 seems to think that parents have absolute, unconditional control our their teenagers. Well we don''t. We try our best to teach them what the right and best things are in life, and how to make good decisions. But ultimately, it''s the teens who make the choice.

Regarding Palin acting morally superior...not aware of that posturing by her.

Many people have personal and family "mistakes". How this equates to her ability to lead the country escapes me. She isn''t hiding this, unlike Edwards little "mistake". Besides, I didn''t think character was supposed to be a presidential issue.

Taking it for granted that Integrity no longer plays any part in politics, the choice of Palin comes down to whether or not she is the right person to sort out the bent GOP''s in Washington, my guess is that she is. As for the self righteous DEMS, your Squeeky Bums are very apparent, get over it!

This makes ZERO difference. Many people are coping with teen pregnancies; regardless of political persuasion. I''m an Obama supporter, but, leave these kids alone.

Its going to be hard enough on them as it is.

We don''t need this to beat McCain and Palin. They''ve already given us everything we need.

So this is the example set by Christian evangelicals. Excuse me, but I''m going to be a little more heavy handed with my children. This woman isn''t a leader. They call her the barracuda, and the daughter they call doggie style.

Now, now...before we get too worked up about this we need to remember that there are rules for conservative Republicans and rules for the rest of us.

Right-wingers hold everyone else to standards higher than they themselves could ever meet.

Nice Policrypt! Christian values also includes the act of forgiveness.

So what do you say when a non-Christian gets pregnant out of wedlock? Or how about a Jew or a Hindu or a Muslim? Hmmm?

A good time to highlight McCain''s record!!

A few highlights of McCain%u2019s voting record:

He voted against requiring health care plans to cover birth control (3/22/03).

He voted against comprehensive, medically accurate *** education (7/25/06).

He voted against international family planning funding (3/14/96).

He voted against funding to prevent teen and unintended pregnancies (3/17/05).

He voted against public education for emergency contraception (3/17/05).

And he voted against restoring Medicaid funding that could be used for family planning for low-income women (3/17/05).

Sadly, Sarah Palin''s daughter is a living example of the failure the abstinence-only *** education that Palin supports. Abstinence-only education does not reduce teen pregnancy. See:

Liberals are neochristians. Don''t you just hate another name given to your supercilious Puritanism?

PAPA DON''T PREACH.

The Humantist Manifesto=their bible
God=Al Gore
The Messiah=Barack Obama

This is a religion and this is as blatant a religion as Christian, Muslim, or Hindi.

Yeah, those calling Republican family values hypocritical go ahead and keep talking you are only puling your candidate down with you. I suppose the 17 year old would meet Dem approval if she made a beeline for the planned parent clinic.

Dems = hope and change - ha ha ha ha ha ha give me a break.

I have trouble, real trouble...believing for one minute that McCain and his camp knew about this. The issue folks, isn''t the fact that Sarah Palin''s child is pregnant, get past that one. Look at the lies once again, and it pretty much sums up what you would be looking at for the next four years. McCain...McBush.

All party affiliations aside...should we not try to reach the behaviors typically known as "family values"? What''s wrong with family values? We have all strived to achieve something difficult in our lives...stop smoking, stay sober, fight for your marriage, get good grades, be a good parent, etc. So if the rule of the day is to criticize those who try to hold up a standard; who try to live by that standard; then pity on those critics. What standard are they holding up? What "value" are they teaching?

The issue here is REALLY that we are looking at a possible President who cannot get his staff to be truly CURIOUS and learn all they can about ANY issue, including the first job...vetting a possible running mate. McCain says he surrounds himself with good people...really???

This just proves to me McCain is, more of the same as the Dems painted him.

He just lost my vote. With or without her...she is NOT the problem. How a candidate runs his campaign is indicitive of how he governs. Bush ran a mean campaign...we got a mean administration. McCain is running an imcompetant campaign. Need I say more?
