Obama Ad Attacks McCain For Owning Seven Houses

Talk about your quick turnaround: In an interview yesterday, John McCain said he wasn't sure how many houses he owns. Now the Obama campaign is out with an ad highlighting the comment and criticizing McCain for owning seven houses.

The campaign tells CBS News the ad will air on national cable. No word on how much money the Obama team will spend to run it.

"Maybe you are struggling just to pay the mortgage on your home," an announcer says as the spot opens. "But recently, John McCain said the fundamentals of our economy are strong."

The announcer then says "hmmm" as a shot of a "foreclosure" sign appears onscreen.

"Then again, that same day, when asked how many houses he owns, McCain lost track," the announcer continues. "He couldn't remember. Well, it's seven. Seven houses."

(As we pointed out in an earlier post, many of those houses are actually owned by McCain's wife, Cindy. And it turns out the McCain family may actually own eight houses.)

Onscreen, the words "worth thirteen million dollars" appear, in reference to the total value of the houses.

Concludes the narrator, as the ad cuts to a shot of the White House: "And here's one house America can't afford to have John McCain move into."

The McCain campaign quickly emailed a response to reporters, from spokesman Brian Rogers: "Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?"

CBS News's Maria Gavrilovic reports that Obama brought up McCain's houses comments this morning on the stump.

"Now think about that - I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make five million dollars, and if you don't know how many houses you have, then it's not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong," Obama said.

(The $5 million comment is a reference to McCain's response when recently asked by Rick Warren what constitutes rich. His campaign later said McCain was joking.)

Added Obama: "But if you're like me and you've got one house - or you were like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don't lose their home, you might have a different perspective."

The Obama campaign in Florida and Pennsylvania has sent out a release lauding the launch of a "statewide search to find Floridians/Pennsylvanians who, like John McCain, have so many homes that they just can’t keep track of the number."

From the Pennsylvania release:
The campaign will spend the day surveying Pennsylvanians by phone to ask this question:

“Yesterday, John McCain couldn’t remember how many homes he owns because he has so many. The Obama campaign is trying to find Pennsylvanians who, like McCain, have lost track of the number of homes they own. Do you know how many homes you own?”

The campaign will announce the results of the search late this afternoon and they will produce a video of the responses they get in Love Park.
In Michigan, meanwhile, the Obama camp is launching “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: McCain Edition,” in which "volunteers will be able to win a free bumper-sticker if they correctly guess the number of houses John McCain owns." And McCain surrogates in Vermont, Wisconsin, Missouri, and a number of other states have been spotlighting the issue in appearances today.

McCain the Maverick Social-Conservative!! If the Republican President is a Social-Conservative, does that mean the slogan will be "Vote for McCain and more of the same but different????". It seems to lose something in the translation.

This is silly on Obama''s part. When McCain made that QUIP (he WAS kidding) about the 5 million he said he was sure something would be made of that remark and, he was right. Obama''s camp are so frustrated they can''t pull way ahead of McCain in the polls, they are grasping at straws. Also, why is the silly press calling this "joke" McCain made a "gift" to Obama''s camp? How desparate does that sound?

SO MUCH FOR CHANGE! Obama had the chance to select the most qualified woman, who actually received more popular votes then he did, and he chose an old washed up, has been toad. WELL LADIES, we just got shafted again by this little self serving idiot! Say "Hello President McCain!" The sexist pigs at the DNC need to be sent a message.

semperfi2008 - 4 years ago Kerry''s 5 houses were an issue. There is an update that McCain has 10 - 11 houses (two condos were merged into a super-condo, But it may get worse -- rumors are Romney will be the VP and add 4 more -- is Kerry was unworthy with 5 houses according to Republicans does that make McCain-Romney almost three times more undesirable by the same Republican standard? It certainly makes a story that the Republicans are completely out of touch with the middle class. Considering two rich guys running with aissue positions to increase their personal wealth through tax breaks favoring themselves -- it is a repeat of the conflict of interest matters that plague McCain. like the Keating Five and a PAC to end lobbyist influence that accepted unlimited contributions from lobbyists, and now over a million dollars in political contributions from a Jack Abramoff associate. Not to mention the fallout of numerous Republican Congress critters under indictment or investigation at the present time -- despite the Republican''s cleanup efforts after the 2006 midterms.

McCain mya be rich but he is a lot more generous than Obama.
Another example of actions speaking louder than words can be found when we listen to Obama''s money talk. According to Obama''s tax returns from 2000-2006, the Obamas have given far less to charity than John McCain has. In all but the two most recent years reported, the Obamas gave around 1% or less of their income to charity. Their contributions increased in 2005 and 2006 to 4.7% and 6.1% respectively, but still are far short of those of McCain who gave 28.6% in 2006 and 27.3% in 2007. But if you listen to Obama''s words you will hear that he is very concerned about the least among us.

This is what Obama''s brother has to say about him: "If anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related. I am ashamed," he said.

The DNC should have nominated Hillary. It''s really not too late. Obama has no chance to win.

The McCain camp should run a reply asking Osama: How many poor destitute brothers do you have?

When asked about his houses McCain was thinking about how stupid and irrelevant the question was. I would have replyed: "It''s none of your business". How many houses do you own?

To make an issue of the number of houses someone owns or doesn''t own is just plain silly. In the American dream, you can own as many houses as you can afford to own or you can choose to rent if you prefer. What Obama needs to remember is that charity begins at home. There is an interview published about his brother in Nairobi, Kenya who lives in a shack on a dollar a month. When asked about Obama, he had this to say: "If anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related. I am ashamed," he said.

And he wants to be Commander in Chief? God help us.

Let''s be clear. The attack isn''t against the number of houses McCain owns, as the poorly written headline suggests. The attack is that McCain didn''t know how many he owned, thus illustrating how out of touch he is with America.

The number of houses is not the issue

McCain''s Mental Capabilities are the issue

Such as

Cxeckslovakia still exists

Putin is from Germany

The mythical Iraq-Pakistan border

And then for others there is the issue of conflict of interest -- hiding of personal / marital assets and the personal gain to be received by the McCain''s when he makes Bush''s Tax Cuts e permanent and adds in the McCain tax cuts increase their wealth even more.

Boo-hoo-hoo.....Ubama hits McCain for owning seven houses. I heard he and his wife own more than that.

Only a real socialist/commie would care what successful people have because they are incapable of having it.

Hey, Barry-O...instead of shining about what McCain ownes, why don''t you care about your brother over in Africa living on $1 a month!?!??!!

How much do YOU and your ''ho'' make....5 million a year???? Can''t you flip your brother a $20 and double his income, you cheap bas*****???

Once again, Obama displays stupendously bad judgement. Making an issue of the houses Cindy McClain bought is going to focus more attention on the favors Tony Rezko did for Obama before he was convicted, and what Obama did for Tony Rezko to make Tony so ... friendly. Chicago politics won''t play well in Peoria.

P.S. Cindy McCain has a lot of shoes too - it''s a female thing. Obama better not have a problem with that or the breadwinner in his family (Michelle), will probably put him back in his place.

bama lived in Hawaii with his grandparents, did you see where he went when he was on vacation. Not a bad place to growup. He spent 1/2 hour with grannie, paying respect to her didn''''t take long and a visit to where his mother''''s ashes were spread, another short visit. Seems like he dislikes white women especially those close to him.

His house, courtesy of Rezko a corrupt individual. Michelle is a pitbull and no Jackie O who was refined and polished, no fist bump for Jackie O. Michelle is still a street urchin.

McCain is 72, was a POW for how long, and has been in service to his county for how long (no pork for his state), don''t you think he is entitled to live the good life?

Obama, finally a millionaire with crooked ties in buying one house (7 would be a real deal with his ties) trying to act like a hopeful concerned representative of the people, won''t play dirty (yeah) and actually the same politician as the rest. Concerned until he gets what he wants, then he will have to let Congress have their say since all the President can do is approve or veto bills.

Congress has the real say and the Democrats in Congress have fallen short and so will Obama.

No matter who he chooses, his ego will override theirs just like Cheney overrode Bush. Cheney is president not Bush, he is just a spokes person for Cheney.

McCain at least can make his own decisions, Obama needs 300 advisors to make decisions on foreign policy, 3 a.m. means 300 calls to advisors before a decision is made.

The elitist mccain owns 7 or 8 properties valued at over 13 million dollars. I''m not really sure how many I''ll get back to you, what a jerk. He and his wife on the cover of a magazine featuring the remodle job to his ranch worth about 1 million in remodleing.

Wow, which is worse?

Someone who works hard and make the American Dream come true by owning 7 houses?

Or Someone who through Political power get "Cheap" houses from a Corrupted fixer??
