Obama Ad Attacks McCain For Owning Seven Houses
Talk about your quick turnaround: In an interview yesterday, John McCain said he wasn't sure how many houses he owns. Now the Obama campaign is out with an ad highlighting the comment and criticizing McCain for owning seven houses.
The campaign tells CBS News the ad will air on national cable. No word on how much money the Obama team will spend to run it.
"Maybe you are struggling just to pay the mortgage on your home," an announcer says as the spot opens. "But recently, John McCain said the fundamentals of our economy are strong."
The announcer then says "hmmm" as a shot of a "foreclosure" sign appears onscreen.
"Then again, that same day, when asked how many houses he owns, McCain lost track," the announcer continues. "He couldn't remember. Well, it's seven. Seven houses."
(As we pointed out in an earlier post, many of those houses are actually owned by McCain's wife, Cindy. And it turns out the McCain family may actually own eight houses.)
Onscreen, the words "worth thirteen million dollars" appear, in reference to the total value of the houses.
Concludes the narrator, as the ad cuts to a shot of the White House: "And here's one house America can't afford to have John McCain move into."
The McCain campaign quickly emailed a response to reporters, from spokesman Brian Rogers: "Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?"
CBS News's Maria Gavrilovic reports that Obama brought up McCain's houses comments this morning on the stump.
"Now think about that - I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make five million dollars, and if you don't know how many houses you have, then it's not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong," Obama said.
(The $5 million comment is a reference to McCain's response when recently asked by Rick Warren what constitutes rich. His campaign later said McCain was joking.)
Added Obama: "But if you're like me and you've got one house - or you were like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don't lose their home, you might have a different perspective."
The Obama campaign in Florida and Pennsylvania has sent out a release lauding the launch of a "statewide search to find Floridians/Pennsylvanians who, like John McCain, have so many homes that they just can’t keep track of the number."

The campaign will spend the day surveying Pennsylvanians by phone to ask this question:In Michigan, meanwhile, the Obama camp is launching “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: McCain Edition,” in which "volunteers will be able to win a free bumper-sticker if they correctly guess the number of houses John McCain owns." And McCain surrogates in Vermont, Wisconsin, Missouri, and a number of other states have been spotlighting the issue in appearances today.
“Yesterday, John McCain couldn’t remember how many homes he owns because he has so many. The Obama campaign is trying to find Pennsylvanians who, like McCain, have lost track of the number of homes they own. Do you know how many homes you own?”
The campaign will announce the results of the search late this afternoon and they will produce a video of the responses they get in Love Park.

See all 929 CommentsAnother example of actions speaking louder than words can be found when we listen to Obama''s money talk. According to Obama''s tax returns from 2000-2006, the Obamas have given far less to charity than John McCain has. In all but the two most recent years reported, the Obamas gave around 1% or less of their income to charity. Their contributions increased in 2005 and 2006 to 4.7% and 6.1% respectively, but still are far short of those of McCain who gave 28.6% in 2006 and 27.3% in 2007. But if you listen to Obama''s words you will hear that he is very concerned about the least among us.

The DNC should have nominated Hillary. It''s really not too late. Obama has no chance to win.
And he wants to be Commander in Chief? God help us.
McCain''s Mental Capabilities are the issue
Such as
Cxeckslovakia still exists
Putin is from Germany
The mythical Iraq-Pakistan border
And then for others there is the issue of conflict of interest -- hiding of personal / marital assets and the personal gain to be received by the McCain''s when he makes Bush''s Tax Cuts e permanent and adds in the McCain tax cuts increase their wealth even more.
Only a real socialist/commie would care what successful people have because they are incapable of having it.
Hey, Barry-O...instead of shining about what McCain ownes, why don''t you care about your brother over in Africa living on $1 a month!?!??!!
How much do YOU and your ''ho'' make....5 million a year???? Can''t you flip your brother a $20 and double his income, you cheap bas*****???
P.S. Cindy McCain has a lot of shoes too - it''s a female thing. Obama better not have a problem with that or the breadwinner in his family (Michelle), will probably put him back in his place.
His house, courtesy of Rezko a corrupt individual. Michelle is a pitbull and no Jackie O who was refined and polished, no fist bump for Jackie O. Michelle is still a street urchin.

You people just kill me trying to slander Obama, and keeping under the rug Mc Bush, like he is squeaky clean. Have you seen his house in Arizona? Please he has condos and mansions all over the place he has 10 I know this article says 7 wonder why they don''t want to show the other 3. I wish I had a grandma in Hawaii. Can''t you be jealous without showing it

Obama, finally a millionaire with crooked ties in buying one house (7 would be a real deal with his ties) trying to act like a hopeful concerned representative of the people, won''t play dirty (yeah) and actually the same politician as the rest. Concerned until he gets what he wants, then he will have to let Congress have their say since all the President can do is approve or veto bills.
Congress has the real say and the Democrats in Congress have fallen short and so will Obama.
No matter who he chooses, his ego will override theirs just like Cheney overrode Bush. Cheney is president not Bush, he is just a spokes person for Cheney.
McCain at least can make his own decisions, Obama needs 300 advisors to make decisions on foreign policy, 3 a.m. means 300 calls to advisors before a decision is made.
Wow, which is worse?
Someone who works hard and make the American Dream come true by owning 7 houses?
Or Someone who through Political power get "Cheap" houses from a Corrupted fixer??
