Pawlenty Praises Obama?

Perhaps in a lesson in how not to position oneself for a vice presidential selection, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty had words of praise for Democratic Barack Obama in a speech to conservative activists in the Washington area today.

Speaking to the GOPAC, Pawlenty said, “say what you will about Barack Obama … people gravitate when you have something positive to say." Pawlenty added that John McCain has also been positive thus far, according to the AP. "People want to follow hopeful, optimistic, civil, decent leaders," Pawlenty continued. "They don't want to follow some negative, scornful person."

Pawlenty has been high on the list of names being speculated about as possible running mates for McCain (he’s currently ranked 2nd on our GOP VP Hot Sheet). But traditionally, one of the primary tasks for the running mate is to spearhead criticism of the opposition and anything that resembles praise could be an impediment to that (can’t you just see the Obama ad using Pawlenty’s words?) Another primary requirement for a running mate is the ability to stay on a message and this may be seen as Pawlenty stepping off of it a bit.

Pawlenty is smart enough to avoid his political suicide by being VP for McBush.

This is a clear sign that Pawlenty perceives McCain as a loser and is positioning for a favorable relationship with the next president.

Maybe Minnesota governor Pawlenty is purposely sending McCain a signal that he does not want to run with him because of his negativity. People in Minnesota are very balanced and fair-minded, and I can''t believe all of McCain''s childish acts are playing very well there. I for one want to thank Gov Pawlenty for saying what we all hope for.

Uh-oh. That is not going to work. A Republican acting like a decent human being. He will be tarred and feathered and run out of town by Karl Rove. Decent is not in the Republican strategy book.

8 years of incompetent Presidential leadership with 26 out of the last 28 years of Republican Congressional domination, and the Republicans have the gall to blame Democrats for all of our problems!

The American people are just not that stupid.

It still amazes me that the Republicans after being in power the last 8 years, have the nerve to try and change the debate from real important issues challenging America right now and if not rectified will send America down the road of history like ancient Rome.
I for one want dialog pertaining to the issues, not lies, distortions, character assasination and Paris/Britney.
We should expect and demand more from our politicians. The I don''t care attitude gave America 8 years of Bush. We can''t afford to sleep in this election.

Peterp111, please get out of my country. People like you are responsible for all the bad things that happened in my country for the last eight years.

At least Gov. Pawlenty had the guts to tell it like it is. I suggest that Sen. McCain take the Governor up on his advisement. If the Governor''s words hurts his chances of being the Senator''s running mate, that is unfortunate.
