Starting Gate: A Fudge Too Far?

“Don’t be confused. I will bring the Iraq war to a close when I am president of the United States of America.” That was Barack Obama, forcefully pushing back against growing questions about his commitment to the anti-war position that helped propel him to the Democratic nomination.

His suggestion last week that he was continuing to “refine” his position on the war was the latest in a series of shifts on a variety of issues which have befuddled and angered his political base. Thousands of his own supporters launched a protest on the official Obama Web site after he announced his support for the Senate compromise on FISA, for example. And conservatives have crowed about his seeming support for Supreme Court decisions on gun control and the death penalty that put him in the same camp as Justice Scalia.

Most of those semi-minor shifts could be forgiven by Democratic activists smelling a November victory in the air as attempts to solidify his position among centrists and inoculate his candidacy against the Republican attacks to come. But not when it comes to the war in Iraq. That’s an issue on which progressive activists have little wiggle room.

In 2006, Democratic candidates rode a wave of anti-war sentiment to a Majority in the House, ending nearly six years of Republican rule in government. Hopes were high among those who had organized, blogged and raised money for candidates whose primary goal was to bring the war to an end by any means necessary.

For their efforts, anti-war activists were rewarded not with a reduction of the war in Iraq but an escalation. Democratic leaders have at times talked tough about ending the conflict but have made no serious effort to cut funding or force a change in the administration’s overall policy. Now the party’s presidential candidate, who reminded primary voters at every turn that he had opposed the war from the beginning and would end it within 16 months of taking office, seemed to be backing away.

That could be a fudge too far. Obama is in a delicate position on Iraq as he plans a trip there this summer. If he doesn’t talk to military leaders on the ground and at least appear to be open minded, what’s the point of going there at all? He has in the past said that as president, he would dictate the broad strategic goals, leading to the assumption that he would have very little use of his general’s assessments of how the war is going. He’s also up against the reality that even if he insists on an end to the war, it may take longer than 16 months to get there.

Nevertheless, it’s an issue that lies at the heart of Obama’s candidacy. He argued in the primaries that judgment, not experience, is the key to leadership. Looking at his forceful push-back on the Iraq issue and charges of flip-flops, he may have slightly misjudged how little wiggle room there is on the war.

Around The Track

  • John McCain told reporters that the U.S. will withdraw from Iraq “with honor” and that an end to the war would be dictated by “the situation on the ground,” reports CBS News’ John Bentley. McCain was responding to a statement by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki suggesting that the two countries should set a timetable for U.S. withdrawal. “We will be able to withdraw with honor, and I am sure that it will be dictated by the situation on the ground,” McCain said. “I’m confident that is what Prime Minister Maliki is talking about, since he has told me that for the many meetings we have had."

  • McCain was also asked about a recent report about the increase of U.S. exports to Iran, especially exports of cigarettes. Before the question was finished, Bentley reports, McCain jumped in and said, "Maybe that’s a way of killing them." He quickly added "I meant that as a joke."

  • Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton take another step in their newfound friendship tonight when they get together for a round of fundraisers targeted both to help bring Clinton donors into the Obama effort and to retire the New York Senator’s debt. As the New York Times reports today, it’s a shotgun-marriage for some supporters on both sides.

  • Just because Obama’s two daughters took part in a full-family interview with “Access Hollywood” this week doesn’t mean that they will be doing anymore. In a round of interviews with the network morning shows this morning, Obama said he was having second thoughts about the wisdom of putting his daughters in the spotlight and said that the family will avoid doing so in the future.

The only one "Confused" Obama, is YOU.
You can not make a statement of this magnitude without visiting the country and speaking to military commanders first.
If this is the way you plan to lead a country we don''t need your inexperiance.

If Obama is considered to lack experience, and George Bush is considered to be "experienced", I will take Obama any day. After all let''s take a look carefully at what 8 years of experience in the White House has gotten us into. Four thousand dead because of presidential lies, over a trillion dollars in debt. The systematic destructionof our Armed Forces. We allowed, and continue to allow the bankers to run amock, resulting is the sub-prime crisis; lost all prestige and goodwill throught the world. For finality reached new lows by applying Orwellian doublespeak justifying torture via waterboarding. Experience like that this great country does not need. I speak a former Marine, and a Vietnam veteran.

Ariel 133, I wonder if you know that the commanders on the ground don''t speak for themselves. They follow the presidential line thanks to the Bush administrations destruction of carreers by experienced politicians like Donald Rumsfeld. Not only did he demean the profesional military, but also wrecked carreers like Gen. Ricardo Sanchez and dont forget when the Generals said we need more troops at the onset, Rumsfeld had the General retired. It seems to me Obama has it right, judgement is what''s needed. Look at Donald Rumsfeld and see what experience got us into, and look what it has done to our military and their equipment in the process. Sending our young men without proper equipment is just plain Un-American.

You should expect a persons positions on issues to change as the circumstances change. The situation remains fluid over there and to marry yourself to one tactic is stupidity (which kind of reminds me of Bush). I don''t think Obama ever intended to just rip the rug out from under the Iraqi people, but I do believe he''ll get our troops out of there a whole helluva lot sooner than McCain would... by years or decades even.

His most recent at a townhall meeting, McCain Lies about his Vets voting record.
    *********************************
    McCain: %u2018I Received The Highest Award From Literally Every Veterans Organization In America%u2019;

The recognition McCain has received from veterans groups is not "high awards" but failing grades:

%u2014 Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave McCain a grade of D for his record of voting against veterans. (By contrast, Obama got a B+.)

%u2013 Disabled Veterans of America noted McCain%u2019s dismal 20 percent voting record on veterans%u2019 issues. (Obama had an 80 percent.)

%u2013 In a list of "Key Votes," Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) notes McCain "Voted Against Us" 15 times and "Voted For Us" only 8. (Obama voted for VVA 12 times, and against only once.)

Obama will get our troops out sooner than McCain? How''s that? He now has adopted the same standard as McCain: talk to the commanders on the ground and let conditions determine when we leave. That''s been McCain''s position all along. And if the Iraqis ask us to leave, we''ll do so. Nothing new there. Obama is a big phony and it''s time you Obamatons realized that.

Vaughn is another commentator" pre-occupied with slicing and dicing every nuance (he can make up in his head) Obama says.

At the same time these biased "commentators" ignore the daily gaffes and flip-flops of McCain. Just yesterday McCain said our increased cigarette exports were a good thing. "Maybe that%u2019s a way of killing them", he said. Gee- that''s SO funny John. Maybe standup is your true calling...

The evil, cowardly Whimpo-crats want us out of Iraq NOW! Most of the citizens of the USSA want us out of Iraq and concentrating on Afghanistan, were we should have been all along! Even the Iraqis want us out of Iraq! And the average "grunt" who is doing the fighting and dying can''t say anything "officially" but we all know he/she wants to come home and get on with what''s left of his/her''s life!

Obama wants MOST of them out in 16 months. "Bagdad John McBush" McCain wants to stay an entire CENTURY (give or take a year or 2!) turning the Iraq war into a second 100 Years War!

According to Obama''s plan, if he is able to pull it off, he will still be president when most the soldiers get out of Iraq (and go to Afghanistan, probably!). Under McCain''s plan, he, and most of us, will be occupants of a cemetary plot before ANYONE comes out of Iraq!

I''d rather see an end to the "mistake" now or within 2 years, than have my great grandkids wonder when their turn comes up to fight in Iraq! They will have enough to worry about paying for the enormous debt on this Bush MISTAKE!

    SIG HEIL, BUSH!!!!
sig heil, DEFINITELY MORE OF THE SAME, McCain!!!!

Here are jokes on Obama. %u201CBarack%u201D sounds like US barracks, the %u201CO%u201D in Obama is hinting at praise, %u201Cbam%u201D sounds like bomb, and the last letter in his name %u201Ca%u201D could stand for America. If you stitch these together Barack%u2019s name is saying to America %u201Cpraise the bombing of America%u201D. What makes things worst when you think about Barack%u2019s name is Obama has worn muslim cloths, has a bad middle name (Hussein), and attended an anti-semite church. Believe me, it%u2019s just like someone with an Adolph Hitler mustach repeatedly playing football on the lawn of the white house. How could senator Obama do this to the country. Also, I saw the name %u201CBarack%u201D and %u201CObama%u201D and though of the bombing of the US barracks in Beirut, and the bombing of the US barracks in the Gulf War by friendly fire. His initials, %u201CBO%u201D, are like he%u2019s saying if you vote for me you will be making the country stink with radiation. Also, Barack%u2019s name can be seen to be saying %u201Cbaa%u201D like a sheep saying %u201Cbad%u201D (another reference %u201Cbaa-humbug), %u201Crack%u201D pointing directly towards John McCain%u2019s torture at the hands of the Vietnames. %u201Crack%u201D is a term that can be applied to being hung by ropes with your arms behind your back. So, Barack%u2019s recent attacks on John%u2019s war record are because Barack is literally standing on his first name. Obama has a similar name to Osama Bin Laden.

English isn%u2019t the native language of the United States.
If you want English only, you should move to maybe ENGLAND (where they also speak French, German, Dutch and Whales).

American Children should learn Spanish along with maybe French, German, Dutch, or possibly Norwegian. It%u2019s simply language, people speak different languages in the various parts of this country.

The next fact that might shock the typical single language person living in America is going to be using public funds to teach Spanish to Native Speaking Spanish Immigrants living in America.

The problem isn%u2019t Spanish to English, or English to Spanish. The problem facing America is illiteracy. Most Spanish Native Speaking Immigrants aren%u2019t properly literate in Spanish. If the US Schools (which they are now doing) would teach literate Spanish first to immigrant children the would be able to immerse themselves more easily into the American Culture along with acquiring the necessary English Language Skills.

    bobs1066:

You''re correct that Obama voted against the bill. The following quote explains his vote:

"I believe the American people understand in order to succeed in our society, immigrants need to learn English. But the amendment would do a number of things that are problematical. The first is that it is contrary to the provisions of law that exist in many States. For example, in New Mexico, you have in their State Constitution, a provision that says that many of the documents within that State have to be provided in both English and Spanish. The same thing is true for the State of Hawaii. I believe this is a States rights issue, and those constitutions of those States ought to be respected. I do not believe it is a matter we ought to be imposing here from Washington DC."

"Also, this amendment would undo an executive order conceived by President Bill Clinton and implemented by President George Bush. Both recognized it is important that people who have limited English proficiency receive the kinds of services so they can understand what is going on in terms of the interface between the Government and themselves."

Makes you wonder why the other senators voted for it. Could it be political grandstanding?
