McCain Asks To Lift Offshore Drilling Bans

(CBS)

From CBS News’ John Bentley:

ARLINGTON, VA. – As John McCain rolls out his energy policy this week, he called for a lifting of the federal moratorium preventing states from exploring for oil off of their coasts. “They have to be lifted so that states can make those decisions,” McCain said. “I’m not dictating to the states that they drill or they engage in oil exploration, I am saying that the moratoria should be lifted so that they have the opportunity to do so. By the way, I would also like to see perhaps additional incentives…in the form of tangible financial rewards if the states decide to lift those moratoria.”

Searching for offshore oil and gas deposits was banned in 1981 by the Outer Continental Shelf moratorium, which prevents the leasing of coastal waters for fossil fuel development. Roughly 85 percent of U.S. coastal areas are currently protected by the moratorium. McCain’s Democratic rival, Barack Obama, voted against a Senate measure last March that would have lifted the ban, and has spoken out against offshore drilling, calling it a “short-term solution.”

McCain admitted offshore drilling would only be helpful in the short term, but would provide a good start in helping the U.S. develop other sources of energy. “We must embark on a national mission to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil and reduce greenhouse gases through the development of alternate energy sources,” McCain said. “Exploration is a step toward the longer term goal.”

The agenda of the Republicans is to gain an open drilling arrangement (much like the exploration tax break incentives). The current falsely driven over inflated Oil Futures Market is to gain profits, and to obtain full liberation from environmental scrutiny. The Oil companies and the Conservative Republican Party are not dealing with the better interests of Americans living in America, they%u2019re agenda is driven by greed and profits. The Oil Companies need extract the Oil in already approved drilling sites before they should be able to pursue restricted areas. The United States needs a complete comprehensive energy program and implementation to assure that Americans will not be subject to this type of terror campaign conducted by large Multinational Corporations.

A vote for a Republican is a vote for higher gasoline prices.

McCain''s proposal is reasonable and sensible. Though it is not a long term solution, we need to become self-sufficient in energy production. This would help. Today''s high price reflect supply and demand. The oil futures market helps ameliorate rapid gyrations in price, but it has no effect on the average price of oil or gas. The only way to bring the price down is to produce more oil/gas and/or other competing forms of energy.

Finally some sense out of McCain, he just needs to keep going. Make the campaign promise "Energy Independence by 2012" and promise to open up ANWAR, drill in the Gulf of Mexico, fasttrack oil shale development, invest in sugar cane ethanol in Florida, expand refining capacity, institute a Federal mandate for one low emisson blend of fuel so existing refineries can run full blast and promise huge tax credits for alternative energy vehicles. If he came out tommorrow and stumped with this promise he would win in a landslide.

The Republicans are OIL, and only want OIL. It%u2019s been the Conservative Agenda to force America to be dependent on OIL. Alternative Energy Programs have been stifled and set back in by Conservatives favor of OIL.

A vote for McCain is a vote for OIL.

The agenda of the Democrats and Environmentalists is to prevent drilling for oil domestically, at the same time as they oppose all nuclear and coal development. The result is hundreds of billions of dollars leaving the US for foreign oil and a climate of fear that is directly resulting in higher prices for Crude Oil. Without these unjustified and irrational bans, the USA would be an Oil exporting country again, Crude would be below $20 a barrel, and those hundreds of Billions going to regimes like the Saudi%u2019s, Iran and Venezuela would be fueling the US economy.

It is outrageous and deceptive for the Democrats to whine about the high cost of oil and energy when it is they who have caused this entirely avoidable crisis.

The ultimate goal of the radical environmentalists is to have us all back living in caves and painting the walls. Saying domestic drilling is a %u201Cshort term fix%u201D is disinformation, that %u201Cshort term%u201D would give us 30-50 years of cheap oil minimum, and greatly expand and improve the economy.

While I am all for off shore drilling, this is only the beginning of the sort of energy policy necessary to rid us of dependence on foreign oil. McCain says he recognizes that though I haven''t heard anything else. I hope to hear a comprehensive policy that puts into place free market solutions to get us away from strictly relying on oil as a means of energy.

By the way, here is my idea for dropping the price of oil to $20/barrel and keeping it there...

Want a "complete comprehensive energy program"? Here it is. It''s called, "Get the Gov''t Out of the Way!". Very simple; The gov''t focuses on putting cheats, thieves, frauds, rapists and killers in jail and entrepeneurs skilled in the oil business are left to the business of producing oil. The free market will take care of the rest.

Worried about your beach? Establish it as your rightful property then go about the business of prosecuting those that spoil it. Worried about the caribu? Establish that land as yours and go about the business of prosecuting those who spoil your property which in turn may hurt the caribu roaming on it.

In terms of individual rights and the corallary of property rights, all parties can be satisfied.

Remember the plan, "Get the Gov''t Out of the Way!"

Well, to say that a vote for a Republican is a vote for higher gasoline prices just flies in the face of facts. The simple truth is that the Democrats, who are in bed with the environmental lobby, are preventing offshore drilling and oil exploration in ANWAR. They have also prevented any new refinery capacity over the last 25 years. Anyone with half of a brain know that the market dictates price. With no additional supply and much higher demand caused by China and India, we have what we have.

It''s basic market driven economics.

Announce that you are drilling ANWAR, and just watch those oil prices go down.

Liberals don''t understand economics. It''s all pie in the sky to them.

Thus, ANWAR will be the salvation to all our energy and environmental problems?
Another misleading promotion (like so many others) by the Right Wing using their occupation of Iraq, and drumming of further war against Iran that has built the false Oil Future Crises, to ensure profits for private oil companies.

Great, more of the same%u2026.

Let''s see - "A vote for a Republican is a vote for higher gasoline prices"??

OK - when the Dems took control of congress in 2006 the price of a gallon of gas was around $2.00, now less then 2 years later it has more than doubled. Now, tell me again - who gives us higher gas prices????

The answer is economics 101, when there is high demand, increase supply and prices will come down. Why is it that the Dems don''t seem to get this basic economic FACT? Did they miss school that day?

A vote for a Republican is a vote for POLLUTION!

Republicans are Corruption, War, and Pollution.

Oil was below $50.00 per barrel before Bush''s invasion of Iraq.

Living in Texas, we have offshore drilling. We noted when living in Calif. how everyone loves their cars, but NO, THEY DON''T WANT OFFSHORE DRILLING. WELL, IDIOTS, JUNK YOUR CARS AND WALK OR RIDE THE BUS. OFFSHORE DRILLING CAN BE SAFE AND CLEAN. YOU PEOPLE ARE JUST SELFISH.

AMEN! Uncap and drill and let''s get this puppy on the road!

It''s going to take WHAT? 10 years to get rid of all these damned SUV''s and gas hogs, before these twits can get out affordable alternative fueled vehicles!

Let''s get our own oil pumping and get the supply back up!

What kind of whack jobs do we have up there?

More of the same is a first step toward a new goal?

Only McSame would say that!

So we trash our shores for a very short term goal, and that''s part of a long term goal?

Typical Repug Bushit!

And what states does McSame think would allow it?

Nothing on the Pacific coast, I assure you!

So here''s an idea--let Louisiana take some revenues from the offshore lands. they could rebuild their levees.

McCain says let the individual States decide about whether to drill offshore or not, which doesn''t really affect many States. I wonder what''s his position on letting States decide on medical marijuana?

Come on folks, if I was buying oil from my neighbor at $4.00 per gallon and it was putting my family under economic hardship, I would be less than a man, husband, and father if I did not drill in my own yard and I new there was a great possibility that there was oil underneath. God bless the child who has his own...OIL!!!

McCain and GOP forced and shoved the now failed Energy Policy upon Democrats against strong objections! Now McCain and GOP want to pretend that %u201CNew%u201D solutions are needed and want to forget their GOP INSISTENCE to rape and pillage the Country! McCain and GOP wanted Democrats to just lay back and enjoy being raped as Big Oil pocketed record profits!

The McCain, Bush, Cheney and GOP Energy Policy failure has now come home to roost and now the GOP pretends that they had nothing to do with it! McCain says %u201COH go drill more oil for Big Oil and everything will be OK again!%u201D The total abject failure of the McCain GOP Energy policy must be squarely tied around McCain%u2019s and GOP necks! It is completely OUTRAGEOUS for McCain now to ignore the blatant failed Energy Policy they insisted on and now claim in their BIZARE IMAGINATION that it must be the Democrats fault! NOT THIS TIME! McCain and the GOP ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ENERGY FAILURE AND MANY OTHERS AND MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE BY THE MEDIA!

Maintaining the a ban on drilling will be a test of political courage because it pits the long term good against short term political popularity. Inevitably, we will be unable to avoid replacing fossil fuels with alternative energy sources, but our pace in doing this, and protecting our climate in the bargain, will be impeded if we try to bring down the price of oil to satisfy short term demand. The far better alternative is for oil and gasoline to remain expensive, and for middle and lower income families to be compensated with tax credits as well as subsidies for energy conservation, including fuel efficient vehicles.
