Clinton’s Derby Pick Places Second, Then Euthanized

(CBS)

From CBS News’ Fernando Suarez:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Hillary Clinton’s pick to win the Kentucky Derby this year came in second, but was later euthanized on the track. The tragic moment at Churchill Downs cast an eerie spell over the campaign and the candidate who recently compared herself and her candidacy to the only female horse running in the race, Eight Belles.

At a campaign in event recently in Jeffersonville, just north of Louisville, Kentucky, Clinton encouraged her supporters to put their money on the 20-1 long shot. “I hope that everybody will go to the derby on Saturday and place just a little money on the filly for me,” she said. “I won’t be able to be there this year, my daughter is going to be there and so she has strict instructions to bet on Eight Belles.”

Earlier that day Clinton visited her Kentucky headquarters where a sign on the wall said “Bet on the filly.” A filly is a young female horse, and no doubt Clinton saw a comparison to the horses’ race and her own political race.

On the track today, Eight Belles beat the odds and eventually fought her way to place second, but was sadly put down after sustaining life threatening injuries to both of her front legs.

Nice parallel Suarez. I can''t wait to see how you put a negative spin on her wins in N.C. and In.

As luck has it, as it is a shame! Encouraging people to vote her and bet on Eight Belles especially in this close race and terrible economy. What was Mrs. C thinking? This may be how she is thinking these days. Improbable Gas Tax Relief; another second contender. Reminds me of how Obama has gotten it right time after time. Sorry for Eight Belles and Mrs. C. Can not imagine Mr. C in the WHouse again.

Sadly, your story will do its bidding and "cast an eerie spell" on the opinions of those unable to connect two dots with a straight line.

Hillary bashing is a dead horse.

Quit beating a dead horse.

By the way, the real news story should be the dead horse.

Krauthammer Revisits the ''Race'' Speech
Fri, May 2, 2008 at 8:12:05 am PST

The Barack Obama campaign is desperately hoping that most Americans are dumb hicks with the memory retention of soap dishes; because if they start to compare what he said in that Philadelphia %u201Crace%u201D speech last March with what he said last Tuesday, he%u2019s sunk: The %u2018Race%u2019 Speech Revisited.

%u201CI can no more disown him [Jeremiah Wright] than I can disown my white grandmother.%u201D

%u2014 Barack Obama, Philadelphia, March 18

Guess it%u2019s time to disown Granny, if Obama%u2019s famous Philadelphia %u201Crace%u201D speech is to be believed.

Eight Belles'' second place finish earned those who bet on her more money than the first place finisher. And she ran until she could run no more. That filly holds a dear spot in my heart.

I feel sorry for the horse but it seems like karma in a way. Hillary bet on herself to win the nomination then watched as her chances died...like the poor horse Hillary will keep running till she drops.

I have seen this time and time again. Horses pushed beyond when they should be. They can be forced to run to their death as I have seen many times before. If it is not a heart issue that would have been caught in the numerous routine physicals, I would imagine her ankles were bruised or week from the races prior or practice. May God Bless Eight Belles as I saw this happen to my own mare but I pulled her from the old owners after she collapsed by running her heart out. She lived and is with us today if only I could of done this for Eight Belles.

There are a few mares/horse very few who will not fight back no matter how much they are hurting. She was one that would die for her owner and she did. She was on in a million to have been like this to not fight back and a very special mare. This is a long race and now to continue the abuse in the name of greed even knowing full well Big Browns feet are bad the owners press on to the Preakness in just two weeks. Barbaro was not ready to run again. He was injured going into the derby. We took that hard because Dr. G_ _ _ _ _ make prosthetics for horses and could of amputated. He operated on and saved Seattle slew and my mare filly runner. This sport is mean and cruel and for those hundreds of horses who are bread to run and never even make it pass Los Alamitos or those who run even in the derby are never heard from again. I do not need to tell anyone where these horses end up. Especially now the warmbloods are the choice of the hunter jumpers. I hope the owners have a chance to read this as do Eight Belles trainer. You know it and I know it. Training for over 20 years would how could you of missed this? ENJOY YOUR SECOND PLACE EARNINGS . Besides these horses are all insured for their deaths. There is still money to collect from the insurance even when dead. We love your heart Eight Belles we love your spirit and I am so sorry this world is cruel.

Shame on CBS and the author of this article for taking a tragic story and turning it into a political rant. I am disgusted!

(And yes I cried when Eight Belles died.)

I don''t care what anybody says - I find the whole thing funny. I know people who never watched a horse race but watched the Derby because Hillary was talking about the filly Eight Belles. Ironically, the jockey says, and I quote, "I TRIED TO GET HER TO STOP," he said. "I TRIED TO GET HER TO STOP, BUT SHE WOULDN''T STOP." Sounds like Hillary to me. And now Clinton supporters are upset with anyone who is laughing about the whole thing and not seeing the irony in it. Who they should be upset at is Hillary - for encouraging people to bet on a 1200 pound animal going at break neck speed on 4 spindly legs. One misstep and its likely death. Sounds like the two primaries coming up on Tuesday - getting people to back her on a gas holiday and them BAM!!!!! death. The gas companies jack the price up. People are not so stupid, but clearly Hillary thinks they are.

Hillary Clinton should be more careful when she tries ride on the back of somebody elses fame as a metaphor for herself. Besides, I always identified her more as a scrappy junk yard dog. A real fighter who likes to get down in the gutter and brawl at the lowest levels.

It sounds even more bizarre with the fact Obama had bet on the horse that won.

It''s amazing that OBAMA fanatics always brag about winning the race. When OBAMA really win the presidential race, perhaps the only safe place for Americans is Canada.

Out of respect for the dead horse, I''ll refrain from my usual Hillary bashing.

It was a tragedy, and this is not the place for "politics as usual."
